Multiregion BD/DVD - sub £50 decent brand

It doesn't require that much money or power for a HTPC, I mean, you can use a Raspberry Pi as a HTPC and that's neither expensive nor power consuming.

Anyway, knowing that I'm not wanted here, I'd best be off now.

Yes, it's just that when people want a certain item, suggesting that they are wasting their time unless they buy a completely different item which does something different is a bit, well, strange ;)

I play a certain popular game on PS2, and for some reason every time a PS2 user mentions the platform, there's an outpouring of pressure from the majority that the user should switch to the PC version even if they don't want to. It reminded me of that.

Rui: Hm, might get a new keyboard for my PS2 next week.
Other players: What, you use PS2? Just buy a PC!
Rui: But...

Ah, now I see my problem. Maybe I should wait a while and just make a thread about HTPCs sometime along in the future instead of just derailing a thread and coming off as some smug neckbeard* who goes on about 'LELZDVDPLAYERPEASANTSBEINGPOORTOJOINHTPCMASTERWAICE' or some **** like that.

*Which I don't have by the way. All the facial hair I've got at the moment is just chin hair

A HTPC thread would probably be quite interesting. A couple of people here definitely have appropriate kit (I am not one of them; I watch BDs on my computer too but it's a very traditional setup).

I would probably be more patient with "buy a PC!" responses were it not for the years of strained tolerance in the aforementioned game ;)

I am a smug neckbeard PC supremacist, it was more the fact that your statement regarding time and effort was inaccurate that bothered me. :p

Oh... That's what annoyed you.

Anyway, since we're delving off topic; right now, is there currently a good affordable BD player that can be hacked into multiple BD regions? I'm thinking of persuading my parents of getting one.

You guys are spending all this time on hacking region codes on Bluray players when you could spend that time building and sorting out your own HTPCs? My goodness.

I have both :p
The BD is great for quick viewing, the HTPC is more of a media library.

I'm using a phillips BDP3000 for my region A needs, it can be cnahged easily just by using a renamed latin american update from a flash drive. seems to work well :)

ah, I waited too long, the TOSHIBA BDX3200KB is £137.81 now on Amazon and I couldn't find a shop who sells it around ~£70 and also has international shipping for European Union countries :(

So I am considering buying a Toshiba BDX3200 off of Amazon for ~£65 but I have a few questions...

Does the region free firmware still work? How easy is it to install?

how loud/quiet is the player?

And finally, roughly how big is the player?
I currently have a PS3 in the corner of the room and do not have a great deal of space, so if anyone could give me a rough size it would be a great help.

If anyone could give some answers I would appreciate it.

As far as I know you can only upgrade the firmware, not downgrade, so it depends if the player you are buying has a subsequent firmware than the Australian one that can be unlocked.

It's really easy, you just need to download a file, put it on a pendrive, stick it in the player, click a couple of buttons and wait a bit.

Medium level, not so loud but neither silent.

43 x 20 x 4.5 cm, about 17 x 8 x 1.7 inches.

Thanks for some answers there Teo.
I'll probably end up ordering one tomorrow :)

Edit: Player arrived, took no time at all to set it up and install the firmware.
The player IMO is pretty quiet, definitely a lot quieter than the PS3. My only complaint is the big size but I can live with it.

The 3200 is better all-round than the 1200. Both can be made region free via Australian firmware updates.

That said, I've been having a recurring issue with both my 3200s. I keep getting a 1 second sound (and occasionally picture) dropout when I'm watching a DVD/BD. Only happens once per time I load up a disc, and seems to occur at random.

Would be interested to know if anyone else has had similar problems.

Not encountered that problem thankfully but mine has developed a slightly annoying tendancy.

I press the button to eject and the disc tray comes out and then goes back in, sometimes it only comes out 1-2 inches before going back.

Occasionally as I'm removing/inserting a disc it'll go in on its own aswell, kinda annoying but i'm prepared for it now (it's only managed to try and mangle a disc once)

which one would you guys recommend

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-BDX3200 ... xplnetw-21

or

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listin ... xplnetw-21

Just to be sure these two can be region free right?

I've had the 3200 for almost two weeks now and I would recommend it.
I personally have had no issues at all with it.
It's relatively quiet, the region free firmware is really easy to install and takes only a few seconds, and changing region code takes about 5 seconds. it also seems to do a decent job of upscaling DVDs (Well, the two which i tried.)

The only problem i have is the size of it but that's a small price to pay.
It also doesn't like 99% of the MKV's I try to play on it, but i suppose that doesn't really matter so much.

So yeah, the 3200.

You change the DVD and BD region separately.
The DVD region can be set to region 0, so all region discs play and you won't need to change it. The only one then which you will need to change is the BD region when you want to watch a different region BD disc.

ABC.jpg

Basically highlighting DVD region and pressing 0 on the remote makes the player region free for DVDs.
The BD region has to be changed between A+B depending on the region of the disc.
Highlighting BD region and pressing 1 changes it to region A, and pressing 2 changes it to region B.
