Things like Naruto and Bleach are the things I am really not interested in sorry. But otherwise been some great looking titles posted here that I'm definitely going to give a watch.

Great shout on Basilisk, Teo.

I guess you're not letting Curo-kun pass as "art" then? Major bonus points for thinking I was seriously suggesting that, though. :p The attitude you came in with usually leads to me trying to get people to end up with Curo-kun in their google search history somewhere, though.

WHAT THE HELL HAVE I GOT IN MY IMAGE SEARCH ILMAE??!!?!

I think you missed the tone of my post. Guess I should be less subtle.

Please don't use that word as a negative descriptor, EnZyme. In fact, if you addressed people slightly less aggressively when demanding things from them things might go more smoothly.

That means you Ilmae >:| wasting such wit on a newb!

So what's the deal I remember anime being awesome with mature themes and just hardcore in general now its just kinda well [word deleted by moderator]..... Not to flame. But what happened? Is there still any stuff like Akira, Appleseed, Cyber city oedo 808, Guyver, AD police about? I don't want any recommendations of this big eyed crap, and **** aimed at kids, and no porn please. Don't recommend me stuff like Elfen lied either it's not what I'm looking for far from the mark.

Cheers

I can remember back in the day Sci-fi/Sy-Fy channel showing anime all the time - Ninja Scroll, Monster Wicked and Cyber City, Violence Jack, Fist of the North Star et al...Good times and all enjoyable still - heck even Moldiver. Try a series called Angel Cop if you can find it.

Ah, with the immortal line, "Eat **** and die!"

Less a profanity than it is an apt descriptor of life.

Angel Cop is a great show, never heard so much foul language in an anime ^^. I've paid $70 for a new DVD copy of the show, its not cheap for just 6 episodes, but worth it, if you like the style.

You can also try Iria: Zeiram, if you have an DVD 1 Player, don't know if the show has ever been released in the UK.

Good to see Moldiver get a mention along with the likes of Angel Cop and Cyber City.

For better or for worse, if you were into Anime pre 2000, did not know Japanese and lived in the UK, Manga video will be a big part of your Anime history as it was mine and my brother's before me.

Their releases were mixed to say the least, but then again they were the UK pioneers as it were, and in many cases the pioneers set the tone of the Joe Public's view of something. MV did a good deal of harm with releasing stuff like Overfiend which gave Anime in that era a really bad name, but if they had not got things going, the follow up with ADV would probably not have happened either and let things grow.

Not all their stuff was bad. The second Anime I watched, and the one that forever made me a full blown Anime fan was Vampire Hunter D, which though it does not go through my playlist much any more, is still a very good film. Orguss 02 I still adore, Wings of Honeasime, Ghost in the Shell, Dominion Tank Police, Patlabor, Akira - all I still rank highly in their origional releases by Manga. Then again there was the down right terrible things like Overfiend, and the mass of mediocre stuff like Landlock, Amon Saga, Virus and Macross Plus which did little to further any cause.

And of course, except for the bigger releases, some of the dubs are among the worst I have heard! Well Rome wasn't build in a day...

The trouble of looking for things like those MV releases is two fold. Manga only released stuff like that - and as such we got most of the things from that era in the end. Second Anime has moved on and for better or worse, the market has changed. Some things are similar in parts, but the overall tone of Anime is not the same as it was twenty years ago.

(As for Angel Cop, First episode I find great, then it goes off into the crazy stuff and loses its unique edge. Plus the dub was a really bad one!)

Iria did come out over here on VHS, but I'm pretty sure it never had a DVD release I'm afraid. Best just sticking with an import R1.

Much as it warms my heart to see someone else flying the flag for Dominion, Macross Plus does not belong in that sentence.

On that note, has the OP seen M.D.Geist? He was a real doctor, you know.

When I think of early Manga I think....Boobs! Blood!Motorbike! Screaming!Swearing!Explosions!

I think when they wanted to licence something they asked themselves one question 'Would a teenage boy find this cool?' if yes they grabbed it.

I enjoy having more variety now, but I miss the violence and chaos of early Manga. Beacuse of them I get very excited about anything that looks cyberpunk.

I'll let you have that one - It has been years since I watched it so my perceptions may have changed.

Another great one was Venus Wars. 8)

I honestly prefer the title Manga UK were releasing back in their early day compared to what they are releasing today. Sure you get a lot more value for you money now. But I am not exactly that interesting picking up the latest Moe, Fan-service or the lesser quality Shonen titles. Which seem to be the bulk of Manga UK current and future releases.

Not to say I won't give them a go at a heavily discounted price, It's just that I have no really massive desire to own the majority of today's titles.

Not entirely sure if they'd fit the OP's bill, as unlike some I've only been interested in anime for a few years, but what about the likes of Black Lagoon or Wolf's Rain.

A few others that jumped to mind like Texhnolyze have already been suggested :)

As others have already stated the titles Manga released in the 90's were legendary: Monster City, Ninja Scroll, Orguss 02, Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise, Ghost in the Shell, (New) Dominion Tank Police, Patlabor and Patlabor the Movie, Akira. My anime education.

Ah yes the glory days of Manga. I remember being a wee teenage lad, and after seeing the flaming crimson Manga logo come on screen eagerly anticipating the onslaught of animated blood, decapitation and sex that was bound to follow.

But then I eventually got to Ninja Ressurection (was that by Manga?I'm not sure) which pushed all of the above to such an extreme level (Made all the more disturbing by throwing religion into the mix too) that I actually felt quite ill watching it, and was put of anime for some time.
