Manga Entertainment Discussion

Death Scythe
As our forum grows, so does its connections, and now I'd like to give our latest industry representitive - Jerome Mazandarani from Manga Entertainment - a very warm welcome!

As usual, please have the courtesy you'd expect back from someone who works incredibly hard for the UK industry. The Beez thread has gone exceptionally well, and I'd love to see that happen here! (any stupid comments will be dealt with swiftly).

So to start, my question to Jerome is how far do the connections between Manga Entertainment and Starz Entertainment extend? Starz own Manga, but has this been the case forever? Can you give some insight into exactly what goes on in the day to day business at Manga?
Finally, what does Manga stand for (not in a literal sense) - what's your business philosophy?

Again, a great many thanks for taking to time to be here, Jerome - it's greatly appreciated!

Oooh! I've been waiting for this!

Its really good news to have another representative here. Thanks for coming joining along Jerome. As for Manga Entertainment as I whole - I have no specific questions for you as off right now, I'm sure some others are eager to ask. So, Thanks for Joining AnimeUKNews and we'll all be happy to hear from you whenever you can.

Some of Dan/Melonpan's questions are quite interesting actually, I too would also like to know about how much Manga Ent. Is connected with Starz and such.

Excellent stuff, really good news that the forum members here get an insight into the industry. Bravo to all the companies/employees to take time out of their busy schedule and listen to the fans.

Good news! Welcome aboard, Jerome and thanks for taking the time to talk to us! ^_^

First question: Why is there such a long period between the Bleach releases? Will this time span get shorter as the release progresses?

I just want to thank him for personally replying to my questions when I was having problems with the subtitle quality on their Stand Alone Complex releases. It seems when Jerome took over the customer service got better as well.

I guess I'd also like to know, have we seen the last of dubtitles on Manga releases? I was very let down with the Millenium Actress (one of my favourite movies) release because of that and other people have had complained about other releases having Dubtitles only. Manga are fantastic with presentation, packaging and video/audio quality but really seem to be lacking in the quality control of the subtitles a lot of the time. I even noticed some dodgy translations and names spelled wrong on the Innocence release which was otherwise better than the US version.

Statement that has a question in it; As a result of the Dubtitles in Series 2, I have not purchaced any of Naruto Unleased's second series, is there any timeframe for releaseing a proper release or is that £40 in profit that you guys just won't see?

Given the differences in Manga product in the UK and US, subtitles vs dubtitles, extra features in titles like Noein and Tokko, Just how separate are Manga UK and Manga US, and why is this the case?

Are there any plans to drop the slipcases a lot of your releases come in? I think they're just a waste.

Considering so many companies are trying to cut down on waste packaging for the sake of the environment, I can't see any justification for these nuisance bits of card. I throw mine out.

I notice Bleach 1:1 didn't come in one, and the Naruto volumes I'm seeing in stores don't have them anymore...could this mean you have wiped them out?

...I realise other companies as well as Manga use these slipcases BTW, but I can't be bothered going to the Sony Pictures forum to grill them about it. ¬_¬

How about recycling them. Planet killer!

I quite like the slipcases actually. I think they add a lot to the presentation especially for releases like Innocence. I was actually a bit let down that Solid State Society didn't have a slipcase with it. The tin version could have benefitted from one because it's easily scratched.

I agree, slipcases do make a release look brilliant, if done right.

Manga do a good job with them, and other companies have proven them to look awesome too (Mushishi/Solty Rei).

I also think Manga does a good job with the slipcases, and although I like them to death personally, I would have to take the side of the environmental forum

Could I ask what series Manga is currently eyeing, how it would characterise it's portfolio - and whether there are any gaps in the portfolio in that Manga have considered exploring, from previously neglected genres to particular series.

Thank you for joining the forum and I hope my questions aren't too pressing.

I have another question: What happened with the Noein release? :/
Like with Tokko, they stopped releasing it mid-run and opted to go straight to a box set release. For fans left in the middle without a hope for finishing off, there was a scheme where Manga would help fans fill the gaps but I'm not sure how many people took them up on it. (I got Tokko 3 in the end without having to buy the box so I'm happy) Not sure as to the reasons of all this though.

My question: Tetsujin 28 stopped dead a while ago so I doubt there'll be any more single volume releases of that. Any chance of a quick box set release? I liked that show even though it apparently bombed...

Thinking on it, have Manga Ent mentioned any licences since they released Noein, Tokko etc...?
Don't they have the UK licence to the two Stand Alone Complex compilation movies?

They announced and released Bleach since then. They also strongly hinted last year that they are looking into Death Note as a licence as well.

I don't see the lack of licence announcements from Manga as a big deal since they don't licence prolific amounts these days. Besides that the winter months are not the usual time for licencing announcements, which mostly happen at the summer conventions and expos.
