Have you ever been bullied because of anime/manga?

Hi five, Durial666. I proceeded to rewatch it last night (reached episode six with the low-G ninja madness). The first time through, I thought the intro filler episodes were not that great. This time, they seem so full of zest, and I'm finally appreciating how they subtly lay the groundwork for what is to follow.

I'm so happy to finish my day's session on AniUK with a post about PlanetES. This deserves a smiley. :D

Strangely enough, PlanetES is one of the few series which has been on TV here and such that i've not seen. I do keep hearing it is so good, but never had the chance to watch it myself.
On the note of showing stuff to non-anime fans. Kons works and Monster come to mind as you said. Bebop does come to mind as well, since it comes across as having a western feel to it, so perhaps it work better as something to show to those that aren't fans.

Generally speaking, Elfen Lied has always struck me as a terrible choice to show to non-anime fans.

Non-Anime Fan: LOL. Anime? That ****? Isn't it just a bunch of nerdy perverts watching shows about kids and with lots of nudity and violence in it!
Gustav Klimt will see these guys' asses in hell! :p I'll send them packing myself.

Ahem... Well, the 1st anime that I owned was nothing but the great boob-giggling, service-sharing Burn Up Excess. For someone who'd not had his 1st Sex ed class yet (although that came later in the year...), I highly doubt this was a role-model choice for me either. However, it didn't screw me up or my like for anime.

All-in-all: I think it's best to show them a movie like "Girl who lept through time" or the mentioned series of Cowboy Bebop, etc. And if they didn't like it, then they either not interested or weren't meant to "get it."

PlanetES & Cowboy Bebop - good choices :thumb:

Another anime to show to non-anime fans: Ghost in the Shell (it was an influence for the Matrix films after all).

I have not been bullied for being into anime/manga, but then I only really got into in the mid 1990s by which time I had left college.

Sit a group of teenage boys in a room and play the first episode of Elfen Lied and see who isn't ******* watching. You may laugh, but naked women, in any form with gore thrown in, will make a room shut the **** up and pay attention. The other recommendations, like GitS/Akira/Bebop and PlanetES are all good shows and films but do, I feel, depend on being somewhat accustomed to anime. There's more stuff going on up there.

It's like introducing someone to TV by showing them The Wire. You need some stepping stones, and I'm not saying Elfen Lied is one (my mates don't care enough to properly watch anime) but nobody who's never heard of something is going to watch 'em, unless you have been seriously told too.. Bebop might be more acceptable, a bit, but still!

Now, if you wanted to introduce a science-fiction fan or comic book reader into anime - that's an entirely different discussion. PlanetES, LoGH, Gundam all for sci-fi buffs and Bleach for the comic book guys. Obviously.

ΠΛΑΝΗΤΕΣ. プラネテス. Puranetesu. Planetes.

The title is derived from the ancient Greek phrase πλάνητες ἀστέρες; planetes asteres, meaning "wandering stars". As such there is no reason for the ES to be capitalised, and it is not capitalised on any official product. So please... stop. I'm a Grammar Liberal and even I deploRE this sad staTE of affaiRS.

Haha, yup. In no way shape or form is this exclusive to teenage boys, either - I was reading the Tenjo Tenge manga one day, one of my buddies says in a derisory tone "oh, is that one of the those Japanese porn mags" (or something to that effect), but when I replied "yup" and showed him the tits and fists going through faces, he was a bit more like "oh... can I get that in English?".

OT. I've never been bullied for reading manga or watching anime myself. I've always been open about it too (obviosuly). If anything, the only comments I've had are people who seem to assume all Japanimation is hentai? I wonder what they've been looking at on the net. lol

Anyway yeah, I'd have to say that if you are getting bullied for watching anime, the chances are, you would have been bullied anyway for some other reason. I was fortunate enough to get on with everyone at school/college etc. so they just accepted it as something I liked. I feel sorry for those who have been picked out though. I bet it sucks. :[

Ugh. I'm a grammar nazi but had no clue what the official version was. I'd seen PlanetES in several places (I cannot for the life of me remember where, I just know it exists) and some Planetes. Now, this is actually the first time I've decided to spell it 'PlanetES' in a forum after I read or heard some debate somewhere about how it is pronounced. And I figured in an ingenious burst of logic that 'typing Planetes is easier and more straightforward, which means it must be the incorrect version!' So I started going with PlanetES.

Thanks for clearing that up. I too shall go about re-educating the masses upon this fundamental issue. But, please, can we once and for all decide on how the hell it is pronounced? Planet-es? Or Planets? Thanks.

I don't know the "real" real pronunciation, but just based on the kana it is definitely not the English word "planets".

and it should be PLANETES it's always writen in BLOCK CAPITALS, like most English in anime titles. Only things like Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE or NEGiMA!? have titles that are like that.

On a better note Elfen Lied is a good show for people not into anime, my little sister has abducted my boxset again. SHAFT shows are good as well, due to being stylistic.

I think people are discussing the correct English title for it, not the Japanese (which I thought was most commonly written in kana + Greek, not romaji).

I say Planet-es. Planet is a proper word, Planetes is a title. I add 'es' onto the word I know, rather than splitting it up and going Plan-etes.

The series isn't that good, anyway, what with the space ninjas and all. Why argue over the title of a 7/10 anime? You should argue over The Count of Monte Cristo's Japanese title, instead; 'The King of the Cave', if memory serves me.

No. And again, no. Firstly, Planetes is excellent. Secondly, this thread is primarily about getting bullied for watching anime or reading manga. No need for further getting-us-nowhere title debates.

If you keep typing back to me, I won't read your reviews/respond to you, big boobs or not. I like my females quiet and reserved; not argumentative.

I can see Planetes' appeal if you get a hard-on/get wet over hard sci-fi, but there was nothing for me to get my teeth into. Rubbish collection in space is roughly as appealing to me as masturbating with pins attached to my hands, and the 'dreams vs. love' character development was generic, involving a relationship I cared not for. That's why I on-holded it.

Manly Mile is more entertaining.

On-holded it? Does that mean you haven't finished it Aion? Get it completed then give your overall opinion on the series.

I watched 5/6 of the discs, and my opinions don't ever change very much because of my excellent taste.

Manly Mile is more entertaining, like.
