Have you ever been bullied because of anime/manga?

If you want new, this place found some old stock semi-recently and has it:

Though with the current exchange rate it's not cheap! I find OOP anime rarely tends to get cheaper though unless you have a very lucky find.

Thanks a lot for the link! I haven't used that site before, this may be the time to try it. I really want the box set and as you say I don't expect it to get any cheaper however I am hesitant to spend so much in one go but if I leave it they will probably all go. I'll have to think about it :p

When I first started watching anime in the mid-1990s, anime (or "manga films" as it was then known) was kind of cool. A bit like New Labour. But, like New Labour, it's not something of which you'd readily admit to being a fan some 15 years later.

No but I have spoken to people who just see it as cartoons and comics, kids stuff. I've introduced anime to friends and family and all seem to like it.
That's what most people think about it, until I actually show them some of the good stuff like Satoshi Kon or Makoto Shinkai. Of course most cartoons are for kids, but to say all of them are, is the same as saying all films are holywood crap.

I Tend not to mention to people about my special shelf of anime and manga, I assume people wouldn't care but I've learned to keep my mouth shut about my personal life after first and second year -____- so none of my friends really know about it.

It really depends what kind of people your friends are like, if they allow a harmless hobby of yours to come in the way of your friendship or not
What you say there makes me wonder if that's really friendship at all. All my friends (close friends or even acquantainces) get to hear about my hobbies at some point. When someone asks "Isn't it animated porn?", "Isn't it for kids?" I recommend movies from the directors I've mentinoed above. Perhaps I'm just luckier to meet nicer / open-minded people.

Never bullied. A lot of my friends would roll their eyes when I'd try to introduce them to anime.

"Guys, Vampire Princess Miyu is totally cool. If you like Buffy, you'll love this." A bigger lie I have never told.

A lot of my university lecturers liked the anime images that I used in my projects.
Vampire princess Miyu was awesome =D

I think on some level everyone knows I watch some sort of crap, even if they only have a vague idea what it is. My friends know what anime is, some occasionally mention 'anime porn' and stuff. It should be noted, however, that the same guys also might sit with me for weeks on end watching One Piece when I catch up on it. Most have seen Elfen Lied as well, cos... that's the ultimate non-anime fan ****** anime to show. One has read the entirety of Death Note.

Er... that's one set. I have another set of mates who are on MAL and stuff, so yeah, they're geeky. Not as much as me, but they like watching the stuff.

Next time, carry the Berserk manga instead. They might then actually take an interest in what you're reading.

I have never been bullied for anything, nor does anyone take the piss out of me unless they're good friends. If anyone did, I'd beat the crap out of them (big ego + short temper = don't mess). I'm explicit about my interest in anime to anyone who knows me as more than an acquaintance. But I don't own any manga, don't wear clothes with anime/manga references, and I watch anime in the privacy of my room. So, perhaps, I have not yet been truly tested.

Essentially I'd have to agree, I've not been bullied ever over my love of anime, sure some of my mates take the piss occasionally, but most are also into it so that's fine... if anyone outside of my friends did I'd in all likelyhood tell them where to shove it (a healthy dose of not caring what other people think helps)

I highly doubt you'd beat the crap out of anyone, and even if you did, that is stupid and you'd get arrested. Stop taking anime too seriously.

...Well, tbh, I wouldn't say we're that close just yet. We're getting there, for sure, but "good friends" is kind of pushing it. Hold back a little, please - I don't want you to turn out to be the clingy/needy type.

It's mainly guys who get bullied over this sort of thing. Guys look for any weakness in their peers/an excuse to punch someone during the school years, and liking cartoons as a teenager is as good of an excuse as any. A female liking childish things is accepted far more; hence owning teddie bears and whatnot not being thought of as highly unusual. Pink is black for females.

The best solution to getting poked fun at by someone you know not is to stare at the person with an emotionless expression. If you look unfriendly enough/don't react in a way that would suggest entertainment can be had, people either A) click escape or B) get bored. (Of course, the whole staring thing is a bad idea if the person teasing you looks like a boxer. That wouldn't end well.)

Likewise, stop taking people's posts too seriously. Besides, my reference to beating the crap out of anyone had nothing to do with anime per se and everything to do with the unbearable affront of being mocked by ignoramuses. But please refer to my first sentence again.

Shockingly, I agree with this following statement by Bastard. It's a good tactic, and one I employ when I am short on Stella:

I'd beat the crap out of the bitch if she talked back to me, irl. For reals. I'm well 'ard, me, as you can no doubt tell from the manliness that exudes from every word I type.

Nice primary school comeback. I'd expect as much from an idiot that beats people up for childish reasons. If I was taking your post seriously, I'd really go to town on your ass, so don't flatter yourself. :D

And? You're an idiot if you think people mocking your interests is an OK excuse to beat them up for. Grow up.

Zelgadis, stop being a dick. Only I'm allowed to be a dick towards him/her, and you're clearly taking a finger-in-cheek comment and turning it into something more. There's nothing worse than a guy who fails to detect sarcasm/humour and throws a hissy fit. If you were to act like that in real life, you'd be laughed at.

If I wasn't defending Vivi's honour via a keyboard (playing the role of White Knight), I'd grow some muscles, flex them and then snap your puny, Wapanese neck like a twig. I don't take kindly to people who try to copy me; stealing my thunder.

Go join Geek in his bunker.

ITT: Keyboard warriors.

I've never really been "bullied" for liking anime, I've never been open about it though, a lot of people are pretty ignorant around here. I just stick to myself, like how I usually am with anime, it's much easier to talk about something like games, unless you're around a bunch of FIFA heads. Jesus Christ.

i partially agree with you, Elfen Lied is slightly dissapointing

Reminds me of the family guy episode where a rondhouse kick is the solution for everything.

Haha. That's not Family Guy; that's just real life.

Bastard: I am floored. All the terrible things I ever thought about you were right. BUT. I do owe you for saving me the effort of responding. I'm still trying to figure out if Zegaldis is also being ironic and thus - ironically - rendering us the hissy-fitting dicks. You guys would know him better than I - is he that clever?

Generally speaking, Elfen Lied has always struck me as a terrible choice to show to non-anime fans.

Non-Anime Fan: LOL. Anime? That ****? Isn't it just a bunch of nerdy perverts watching shows about kids and with lots of nudity and violence in it!

Anime Fan: You are so wrong! Like... just watch Elfen Lied!!!1!

Listen, if you don't want to be bullied or stereotyped as the above, just have someone catch you with a copy of Mushishi or Monster. What about PlanetES? Or critically acclaimed classics like Akira or Grave of the Fireflies? Not to mention anything Satoshi Kon is instantly art.

Humbug to the prevailing Elfen Lied naysaying, I declare.

I must humbly concur that it is not a beginners' title, however.

Yes, get them to watch this one!
