Hey all, I am quite pished off, I have just missed out on watching Howl's moving Castle, And you know what im Bummed out - Who wouldve thought cartoons can effect someone that much.......

After consulting with a pal he brings up some valid points:

*its expensive, and kinda cliched, and girls aint exactly turned on by it
and it looks embarrasing on the ol' dvd rack

This kinda thinking leads me to believe that:

A. Im never gonna get a girlfriend
B. Anime is actually socially unacceptable
C. Girls arent turned on by cartoons
D. Drawing manga is not a skill employers are interested in
E. i will never be good enough at speaking japanese to make it into a profitable career move

Can anyone help me make an important life desicion............. please

(Ps If answer = continue regardless.....there is this girl i like who likes anime and manga, but i'll be damned if i have courage to talk to her. If i miss this opurtunity how easy would it be to find a replacement?)

dude right im only gonna say this once ok so listen good.

im a hardcore gamer right and now im really really REALLY into anime and yeah it may not seem to be the most socialy expepted thing but think how big this thing is all over the world it aint small unfortuantly we get pigeon holed same as gamers were all apperntly geeks with no life

no gf's and no future you know what i say f*** that most girls arent turned on by anime in fact if you find out what really gets women hot please feel free to psot it cuz men have been seeking that answer since the stone age

about the sociably execptable wow i cant even belive you stated that honestly mate im saying this as a friend do you really honestly care what people think if you do your gonna have a very hard life no matter what you do or are into youll get some flack from someone.

as for the drawing manga i cant really help there but all i can say is that im a programer well still kinda in the learning stages and do you know how many people couldnt give a **** about progs but does that stop.....um no richard branson is disleksic (cant spell that) and look how successful he became and its because he did what he truly had a passion for if your hearts not in it forget it.

Cummon dude if me a god damn brummie can learn japanese then you can (i dont know any but im gonna try and learn)

now no disrepect but if your friend has told you all this sounds more like he jealous of what you have and do like for example i have a mate who doesnt do anything hes like a carbon copy of EVERY other guy in the uk on weekends plays football got a shite corsa tat looks like a damn transformer and hangs around outside burger king wearing fred perry now if i ever got like that id would end it now i enjoy bieng diffrent its what makes you special

but honeslty you can ignore what i say but belive me ive been dealing with questions and people asking questions like this for years now and the sooner you realise that its only what you want that counts

Anime and manga is a mildly expensive hobby. I don't see why people get so bummed out about it, I mean some people spend £50 on one item of clothing they'll wear once before it goes out of fashion.

I personally wouldn't give up something that's been so important in my life for the sake of getting a girlfriend. And I wouldn't be so sure about manga not being a reputable drawing skill - manga styled characters are all the range nowadays. You could be an animator, illustrator, cartoonist, storyboard artist, computer games designer, or even write your own manga and it could go for a fair few bob if it's any good. We're part of an already huge industry that's actually growing in popularity!

To be honest, I think your friend is slightly jealous that you have a hobby you care about and he doesn't!

I agree - and friends who put you down are really not friends at all...

Why should you have to change in order to accomodate other people? If you like something, then like and enjoy it. Girlfriends, or boyfriends, or whatever, if they really like you, won't really care if you like anime or collecting thimbals. And you don't really have to wear a T-shirt that says "Otaku" on it when you go looking for a date do you? If a girl takes an interest in your hobbies, just say you like Japanese animation as an art form or something.

Also, if you continue being negative then you'll never get anywhere. If you're serious about learning Japanese then go for it and really try, you'll be surprised how quickly you can learn a language, and with anime you got plenty of source material.

Well, here's my view:

A. Im never gonna get a girlfriend - Same here... So what? :p Seriously, I've found friends that like anime, and they're girls. If I have friends that are girls, maybe you can find a girlfriend that likes the same. If you're that embarrassed about Anime/Manga, try getting to know them, visa versa, and then later tell them about you're anime fandom.

B. Anime is actually socially unacceptable - Bull... Some people may look down at it, but then why is anime/manga evolving? Cuz it wants to? NO! Cuz there are fans that like it... lots of them. Just gotta keep looking.

C. Girls arent turned on by cartoons - Well, are 7 years olds turn on by Powerpuff Girls? I hope not anyways... :? Cartoons can be funny though, like simpsons. that's adult comedy really, with the violence etc.

D. Drawing manga is not a skill employers are interested in - I found that out... Tough! There are many artists out there. It's rare to become a fully fleged animator on its own, nevermind an actual Anime animator... But if you truely love it, continue on. Maybe not even jobwise, but a hobby. fine something else you're good at and work on that for a job.

E. i will never be good enough at speaking japanese to make it into a profitable career move - Like above, try finding something else, if you truely think you cant do it. Jobs aren't easy to get, especially the coosey ones. Otherwise, that's quiter's talk, and I would look down on that more than anything else. (Unless reasons are have theory behind it)

Dunno if it helps, but that's my view
Good luck either way.

When I have lady friends over I just pop the manga in the cupboard.

Sure i'd love a girlfriend that actually likes anime but meh, so what.

*its expensive, and kinda cliched, and girls aint exactly turned on by it
Girls are generally not turned on by anything a guy owns anyway. Besides, anime dvds are a considerably better thing to have on your shelf than porno dvds. Or worse: Anime merchandise.
A. Im never gonna get a girlfriend
Irrespective of whether someone has Anime on their shelf, they can still fail to get a girlfriend. Guys who gravitate to stuff like anime just generally aren't the casanova type anyway.
B. Anime is actually socially unacceptable
So is farting, taking a leak in public and reaching down your trousers to scratch your balls. Boys do these things all the time, and typically it's the ones that get lucky.
C. Girls arent turned on by cartoons
Tell that to the Yaoi fangirls. Or the Yuri fangirls for that matter :p
D. Drawing manga is not a skill employers are interested in
Pretty much true, but "drawing" under a hobbies list on a CV isn't frowned upon or anything.
E. i will never be good enough at speaking japanese to make it into a profitable career move
Yeah, but attempting to learn Japanese through anime/manga is a pretty dumb thing to do in the first place...

Why is this topic here?

If people don't accept what you like and what hobbies you have then they are not worth knowing about, chances are they are probably jealous.

Being an avid anime fan, hardcore gamer and being female to boot means that it's harder to get people to respect what you like. But I don't care what other people think - let them look down on me into my room full of goodies! I know I have far more interesting hobbies than them - what? Sitting on Boots steps staring at boy-racers going by on Friday night with a few bottles of cider. LOL. Or pubs drinking myself to an early grave. What a waste of money.

Anyway the point of this is - if you are even considering about ditching your hobby to try and find someone then that's your call. Putting down something you love is like losing a part of yourself - you wouldn't even think about it!

There is no point hiding things away, they will know eventually. What happens if they looked in the cupboard and went 'zomg what is THIS??' It's better to let it all out in the open..it isn't some forbidden taboo! The only problem is when it spirals out of control - but that's the same with everything.

Moral of rant: People should accept for who you are, hobbies quirks and all! So no don't give it up!

Yes I'm proud to be a g33k! Shame I don't have an otaku T-shirt ftw!

Your freinds dont think your anime fandom is geeky, socially unacceptable? Well whoop-dee-doo, its frankly none of their business what you like or not.

I'm female, I happen to love anime and manga and games and the like and occasionally I get comments that I shouldnt like such things as they are meant squarely for the domain of guys. Do I care? Not at all, in fact I find it pretty amusing that anyone thinks its their business but mine what I like. If it's "socially unacceptable" for me to like anime and the like, id still rather do it than do whats seen as "acceptable" for people my age and spend my time getting drunk off my face (as Neptune points out).

As for the points youve made as to why you could quit your hobby, I think they have been pointed out here to be rather weak reasons in the first place. But of course if you want to give up something you quite evidently enjoy then that is of course down to you, but id give it a second thought. You also seem to think that a hobby should = career. While of course theres nothing wrong wanting to work in a way involved with your hobby. I don't spend my time lamenting that im not a professional manga-ka or any anime/manga related career as Im mainly into it as.... (wait for it) ...... its fun! If my hobby was something like "watching TV" (I know not a good example), I wouldnt sit there lamenting the fact I wasnt an actress in a TV show.

Also on the subject of "getting a girlfreind", frankly if having anime DvDs on display is going to bother someone they obviously have some serious issues. "omg protect me from the cartoonz". Its quite frankly ridiculous.

neptune 2 venus its like omg what you just said is like you reached inside my head and pulled out all my thoughts.lol only diffrence with your statement and mine is that im male but your view on the out drinking to an early grave is HONESTLY exactly how i think wow see mate the anime comunity is amazing

im proud to be who i am i even wear lan party t-shirts so i cant scream g33k any louder but i am and im proud to be.

bye the way id love to own an otaku t-shirt can you buy direct from them????

If it gets you that bummed then give it up, but you'll probably quit giving it up and buy it again so the moral is anime and manga can become an addiction (kinda) :D

OMG I already knew this stuff, thanks for pointing it out though. And i can make a career outta my (Semi) Goodness at ICT, which come to think of it nobody wants to hear about..... Specially not most girls....... And the point is this topic is pointless youve just said what I always suspected........ Thanks Everybody ^_^, Love and Peace

Self-confidence is a really big part of it, heh. Good on you ^_~

I haven't currently got a girlfriend, yet I've had three relationships. Generally speaking, interests like anime won't play an important role in finding a partner unless you constantly go to anime clubs or conventions and find someone who you fall head-over-heels for; because it's a sit-at-home-and-watch hobby, not-a-get-out-and-meet-friends one. But I don't think there's any way anime will limit your chances of finding a girlfriend. If they disown you just because you have Evangelion sitting on your shelf then they probably aren't worth going out with anyway. Same with friends who put you down. Regardless of what other people think of my anime I always keep it on my shelf, partly because I haven't got anywhere to put it and also partly because if people are going to accuse me of watching porn, I'll gladly make them eat their words by showing them what it actually is.

There are times when I've felt the same way, though- I wrapped myself up in anime to the point where I almost can't focus on finding a girlfriend who isn't into it, and I'm always wanting to magically stumble across the perfect single female anime fan... which is impossible. But since I dislike clubbing and I'm not working at the moment, I'm stuck. Not that I mind particularly, though- in the long run I believe friends are much more important, heh.

With regards to drawing being necessary to a career: probably not, but the ability to do creative things shows you have imagination, and that's always needed. And working isn't the only important thing in the world, either- relaxing and being happy is just as important as making a financial success of yourself. If you can get to mix the two- great! But you always, always need hobbies.

I want to learn Japanese, but I've never actually bothered to try applying for any courses. I know I can because I'm good with languages, but because I haven't, that's why I haven't learnt anything past 'CHEESU SANDO', 'HAMU SANDO' and 'Yosh!'.

Basically, if you want to do something, do it, and screw what everyone else says or thinks. In terms of my interests I'm far past caring what everyone else thinks of me.

There are no girls that like anime? Wow... I should tell it to someone I know... (Most of them are my ex girlfriend by the way... And we had no parted us because of anime...)

B. Anime is actually socially unacceptable

Even GDR and in some case even READING A BOOK... Yes I don't lie to you... There was many kind of person with different opinions... The important thing is how much we can understand who don't think like us...

C. Girls arent turned on by cartoons

Shall you let me disagree?

D. Drawing manga is not a skill employers are interested in

Not even raising a pet or caring for a plant... However there is people that do it... It's called an Hobby I think...

E. i will never be good enough at speaking japanese to make it into a profitable career move

Many of your friend will never be good enough at playing soccer to make it into a profitable career move too... As before it's called an Hobby...

Can anyone help me make an important life desicion............. please

Honestly I think that you're taking the thing to much seriously... You're talking of something that is something that you like, not something you must live for... Liking anime doesn't brand you as an inept or a idiot... Simply you like anime... You can have a normal and quiet life as long you simply like anime... When you get catched too much in it you risk to have bad things, but is for anything that become fanatism...

By the way I would remember you that people need to work for have a living, and not to living for have work... If you don't learn how to enjoy yourself you will have a bad life... And we all had only one of them...

(Ps If answer = continue regardless.....there is this girl i like who likes anime and manga, but i'll be damned if i have courage to talk to her. If i miss this opurtunity how easy would it be to find a replacement?)

First point: Quitting to like manga will give you more courage to tell girls that you like they?

Second point: Girls aren't tool that must be replaced... If you like someone, you like she, and (In the most of the case..) never think to replace it... Think carefully if you like that girl or simply you want to have a Girlfriend to show at your friend/parents...

Not that I have one, but it seems like girlfriends are over rated. Damn hormones! Maybe it's just because I've seen a lot of people around me go through bad relationships (parents are divorsed, sisters seem to have a new boyfriend every week) that I've just lost faith in romance.

I also blame Hollywood, feeding us these ideas of star-crossed lovers and all that. I know we're all smart enough to know they're not true, but a little bit of it seeps through our common sense and makes us all soppy.

Anyway, we're all gonna be bias here in favour of anime for obvious reasons, but the same thing seems to pop up over and over again. You gotta be true to yourself. If you start living just for others, you'll probably never be happy. All the best mate! You knows you've always got friends on here! 8)

I don't think you should give up on anime if you enjoy it. If watching anime and reading manga etc makes life more interesting and fun then why deprive yourself just because your friends don't like it. So maybe anime isn't the 'coolest' thing out there but who cares?

I am not gonna lie, I don't walk around announcing to everyone that I collect anime, most of my friends don't even no what it is let alone whether I like it or not. I am not ashamed by it, I just have chosen not to tell them mainly because its not something I could discuss with them as they have no knowledge of what it is.

Well glad you've got your head together, i would have reiterated what everyone else has said.
Just be glad to be one of the lucky ones to have discovered such a great past time. None of my friends have any interest in anime, but no matter what i'm proud to be a fan, and i love to see all my anime dvds stacked up there next to my tv.
Plus there are plenty of Girls who like anime, i bet half this forum is female, myself included
