My two pence:

As others have said, continue with the anime/manga, since you enjoy it there is no point stoping it due to the fact some people with narrow views think it's naff. I take manga to school to read, and they say as I'm reading Fruits Basket "Look it's dylunio reading his japanes porn, har har" - that just shows how narrow these people are, they know nothing about what they critizise, so ignore them.
One thing I've learnt at school is to be yourself, I used to hate being called a swat or a geek, but then I looked at myself and noticed I was a geek, so everytime people said "your a geek" I took it positivly etc. So be yourself, it's other people's problems that they don't like (more probbably don't understand) your hobbies.
As for girls and anime/manga, what are all the shojo titles there for? I've had girls comming up to me when I was reading Furuba asking to look at it etc. Anyways if someone is so shallow that they can't accept other's hobbies are they not a bit shallow?

Anyhoo, enough rambling, just be yourself, if peeps don't like your hobbies, it's there problem not yours :)

I voted 'Yes (and your friend is a twat')', but I really wanted to put 'No (and your friend is a twat)'. The 'your friend is a twat' bit is more important than whether you wish to give up on anime or not.

It's not worth stopping any hobbies or interests just because it effects your friend's ego. Sorry, but who cares if people think you're a geek? If that's how people feel about me, then I certainly don't want them in my company. I have little time for shallow people who care more about their image than those around them. Sure your friends don't have to all be anime geeks, but if they respect you enough to let you do your own thing without bitching about it, then that's cool.

And in terms of the girlfriend thing? I wouldn't say that all football fans have girlfriends who love it just as much, would you?

My friends know I like anime, they don't care.

It is still predominantly 'geek' tbh.

I watch anime, I play games, I go out thursday, friday and/or saturday; splash the cash, eye up the girls & pull occasionally...

not had a full serious relationship yet; bordering on the edges of one, so when she comes back to my room, and see's my 140+dvd's and artboxes on my shelf, I think I'll just explaing...I like anime...I like you more...mwah!

Nope but the tekkies gf's are normally about 6 stone overweight and look like like a clingon :p

Now my room covered in gaming and anime stuff a mass of anime piled on shelves and do I care nope I still go out have a social life pull women bring em home and show em what funs all about :p they tend to be like "What the ****" then i say im a geek but complain later ;)

Im proud to be a gamer and an anime fan if other wish to call me things make sure its to my face so I can rearrange theirs for them.

You can be an anime fan and still have a life.... your frind has given you nothing but his opinion take it in your stride...

My wife didn't know about my anime fandom for a while after we first met. Then I discovered that she was a bigger fan than me.

Liking anime has nothing to do with being successful with women, and women who are prejudiced against anime aren't worth knowing anyway.

Agreed. That can be extended to all of your so-called 'mates' - the people I call my real friends might not always agree with me on my taste in things like music, anime and life in general, but we respect each other's opinions.

If someone says "You suck for liking anime!" it means that they are a narrow minded, disrespectful [insert expletive here]. Sod 'em, it's their loss!

Like a lot of the people here i put the 'don't give it up' option. From my experience not even girls know why they want to go out with the people they do. Interests and hobbies only really play a part after you've got the (so to speak). As for getting to the point were anime may or may not be a problem there is no advice anyone can give you that will actually be worth the breath (or key strokes) used to utter it. Its all random fate (hmm... is that an oxymoron?), star signs, desinty or as i beleive, biochemical signals.
Could continue but cynicism may build up to toxic levels if i do.
