General Politics Thread

It seems that trump's stupidly named bill which made it through congress by one vote won't clear the senate without major changes because a lot of republican senators have realized that a lot of it such as major cuts in medicaid would be political suicide for them. The democrats are going to have a field day with it.

A lot of people here in the us are having buyer's remorse after making the big mistake of voting for trump last November. That's the main reason behind all the protests against mass deportations and numerous other reasons.

So much for peaceful protest in la and giving Trump what he wants so he can inforce martial law🤦‍♂️

On this point, I think Kwame Ture put it better and more succinctly than I could:

“Dr. King's policy was that nonviolence would achieve the gains for black people in the United States. His major assumption was that if you are nonviolent, if you suffer, your opponent will see your suffering and will be moved to change his heart. That's very good. He only made one fallacious assumption: In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience. The United States has none.”

You can replace "black people" with any marginalised group and substitute "The United States" for pretty much any government and it still holds true. What has "peaceful protest" done for anyone recently? It didn't stop the invasion of Iraq under false pretences and the hundreds of thousands of deaths that resulted in, it's done nothing about massive wealth inequality and government bailouts in the hundreds of millions for private corporations while ordinary people suffer, it didn't prevent China from stripping people of their rights in Hong Kong, it hasn't ended Russia's war in Ukraine and it hasn't prevented Israel from committing war crimes in Gaza. Often protesting against those things has gotten people thrown in jail anyway (worse, in Russia) even when they were peaceful.

Politicians do not give a toss about peaceful protests (just as they don't give a toss about petitions or letters from constituents) because they pose zero actual threat to them or their power. They suffer no consequences by ignoring them. And that's our fault really, as citizens. We're supposed to hold these people to account (and in the US, one of the purposes of the 2nd Amendment is to give state militias, like the one Trump has been ordering around very possibly illegally against the Governor of California's wishes, the explicit right to overthrow the federal government). Few are actually willing to do so. I have to be careful what I say these days, lest I get hauled in front of a court for doing a verbal terrorism, but the news in a January poll that 47% of people aged 13-27 agreed with the statement “the entire way our society is organised must be radically changed through revolution” and the fact that Nike's slogan has apparently been trending on TikTok in oblique reference to something non-sportswear related at least puts a few drops of hopium in this jaded old cynic's tank.

I took part in one of the No Kings protests last Saturday and was amazed to see so many like minded people show up, I think there's hope that trump's bs is going to be euthanized.

Well there you have it, the supposedly isolationist anti interventionist president Trump has just let Israel suck the US into a war against Iran. Netanyahu has played America like a goddamn fiddle. I'm sure this will definitely make the middle east and the world as a whole a safer place, just like our excursion in Iraq did.

Weirdly last night I had a dream where in it I woke up and looked out of my window to see missles flying across the night sky like so many shooting stars, it was frightening.

It's horrifying and I weep for the women who will just end up waiting longer for basic human rights as a result of this crap. And all those poor kids who are now orphans with missing limbs... utterly vile honestly... war is hell on earth I wish we would find better ways of resolving conflicts as a species :(

And I see Kier has come out with some predictably spineless crap about the danger of Iran possessing nuclear weapons and not a word of condemnation for the actual biligerants here. This is his Iraq moment isn't it? Some made up nonsense about Iran "being days away" or whatever from having nukes when there's no evidence to support this. I bet Kier can't wait to get involved in this, if he hasn't already been. Every bit as much up Trumps arse as Blair was Bush's

The nuclear weapon excuse is such rubbish anyway even if it were true. It's entirely understandable to want to have them when you have a genocidal lunatic bully (who does have nuclear weapons) like Israel for a neighbour. How is this excuse any better than Putins excuse for invading Ukraine? It's obviously not and Israel isn't going to stop attacking Iran until they topple the regime. The middle east is already such a troubled part of the world and the west and Israel just can't stop making it so much worse.

Simply put-Trump is a small, undisciplined spoiled brat in an adult's body. He doesn't get his way, he has a tantrum, you do something he doesn't like, he says he hates you and calls you nasty names. He's got to have his way all the time and doesn't care about anyone or anything except his own selfish wants and needs.

Trump with all of whim of the moment tariffs and every other obscene thing that's currently going on is very tiring, I'm sick of everything that's associated with that cretin.

You're absolutely right about this, here in the US Texas, Georgia and more states to come are implementing age verification for social media, porn sites and whatever else the ultra conservative right wing morons deem is necessary to achieve their agenda. If I go to a web site that wants to verify my age or whatever I just close that tab in my browser and move on.

Just to say in the us's current state of Trump caused disorder if you are queer, black, muslim, lgbtq or any other thing outside of "normal" you will be persecuted, harassed or suffer other types of disruptions in your everyday life. I find this to be intolerable-this is what it was like as late as the 1960's or early 70's and this is true in many other countries around the world. ie China persecuting the Uyghurs.

:(

Sorry for not really being sure what else to say but yeah that is bad and it's happened before with some feminist anti-porn campaigners kinda working with the more socially conservative religious ones and then the first thing that got censored was lesbian erotica. I'll admit to not being the biggest fan of porn, there are a lot of ethical issues with a lot of it and a lot of CSA out there, so I don't look at or watch it myself, but I also think porn is actually a pretty cool idea in theory, I just wish that in practice the results were less disturbing and rapey (not trying to kink shame anyone here, making a general point).

Why is it that throughout history that anybody who falls outside the definition of "normal" (whatever that is defined as) is persecuted, harassed and otherwise impeded?

Anonymous is spread misinformation claiming people has got a visit from the police for discussing the online safety act I've discussed it and I have not got a visit from the police.
