General Cartoons Thread

A few classic Nick cartoons have randomly appeared on Sky on demand - they've got Hey Arnold, Aaahh! Real Monsters, Fairly Oddparents and Wild Thornberrys.

(Some episodes of Kenan & Kel, Clarissa Explains It All, Zoey 101 and Unfabulous have gone on there too)

Can’t believe I forgot about this. Not long after The Road Home was announced, the Blu-ray of the series was announced. It’s just The Gathering pilot movie and the series. The rest of the movies, the later specials, and Crusade aren’t part of it.

Yes, I think that was mentioned in another thread. I'm glad it's finally happening.

The Road Home exceeded my expectations. It looked a bit cheap in the trailer, but the animation style works well in practice and it has some flashy action scenes. The story gave us interesting peeks in alternate timelines, including one mirroring an early version of the series climax, from before Straczynski had to rework everything to account for his leading man leaving after season 1.

It was great to hear the surviving actors again, with Bruce Boxleitner carrying a lot of scenes. The recast characters were a mixed bag. The new Garibaldi sounds uncannily like Jerry Doyle. Mira Furlan's replacement didn't sound like her, but did sound like Delenn, as in she captured the essence of the character. Not convinced by the new G'Kar. He turned in a good performance, but I don't think anyone could measure up to Andreas Katsulas in that role.

For me it was the best B5 since the end of the original series. It was a fresh story that tied in perfectly with the original series (one of those alternate realities was shown in the series, but just from Ivanova's POV. This time we see what's happening below decks at the time (The Last Stand reality). But I also believe that because the emotional arc of the film is so fundamental, it works just fine as a stand alone, and as a primer to the B5 story. The end of the film was just perfect too.

Agree about the recast voices. Although with G'Kar, the character was there, if not the voice. It's like he's a regenerated Time Lord. The same character, but not. And also, given the G'Kar that who takes up most of the screentime, perhaps the differences were justified. I definitely appreciated Zathras (although not Zathras). I did notice that Marcus Cole's voice was recast (apparently for budget reasons).

I didn't know there is one.
Where are you watching it.
Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated got me through the COVID lockdown. 2 episodes every day on ITV. Heaven.

Welcome to the forum.

OMG I loved Mystery Incorporated! Particularly Fred and his autistic himbo energy, but the whole show was awesome :D

Damn it, @Dai I blame you and your Monster High talk for me falling back down the Winx hole. Not only am I now aware that nearly every episode is officially available on YouTube in HD in multiple languages but also that I missed the 20th anniversary party in Italy by a matter of days. There was a concert and a late-night rave and everything, Italian Winxers don't f*ck around. An Elisa Rosselli concert, goddammit, I could have been singing along to Unica, Believix, Oltre le nuvole in a crowd outnumbered at least 10-1 by womanchildren still into Winx Club well into their 20s and 30s*. It could have been my time. I very nearly went to the 15th anniversary exhibition which looked interesting since it apparently showed off a lot of production materials but this one looked a lot more fun. Oh well, maybe I can catch the 25th anniversary.

*and judging by the video footage, one old man in at least his early 60s propping up the stage. Forza, grandpa.

I watched a good few episodes, I can't say I'm itching to buy the whole thing and watch it start to finish myself, but if it's a release you wanted I'm genuinely happy for you and other fans of the show, for my part I could appreciate it but I wouldn't call myself a devotee of it, always a good thing when they release these things properly with all the episodes included - for my part I'm still hoping for a complete series Blu-ray of Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated! :)

They’re gradually putting more 90s/00s shows out on DVD which is good to see, including re-releases like Dexter’s Laboratory. Lots of bootlegs knocking around again though so if it looks too cheap to be true it probably is!

Now I'm watching Huntik: Secrets and Seekers (English dubbed), an Italian cartoon of note from the creators of Winx Club (which I have only the most passing familiarity with, but might try to properly watch at some point considering how good Huntik is so far) and I'm a bit over halfway through Season 1 :)

Good news, it's all on YouTube free and legal. Whoever runs the Winx YouTube channels doesn't do a great job of organising the playlists unfortunately, particularly the Italian ones (which I'd recommend for authenticity but ymmv and also rely on auto generated YouTube subtitles) so certain episodes are sometimes out of order. If you get on with the show (or even just like the characters) World of Winx is definately worth a watch down the line. It's absolutely mental and sometimes hilariously self aware, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it in Western Animation (no Trix though, boo). Man, predicting who'll be your favourite Winx is a tough one, I'm going to say Musa or Flora, but maybe Stella.

Also 3D reboot coming soon, which is proving divisive but I think needed to be done. The show had been relying on the same staid fetch quest plots for far too long and the last few seasons felt like flailing around trying to find new direction without daring to break out of the cycle (whilst also escalating power creep to a point I think a Trix victory and a bad end for that timeline is ultimately inevetable, but that's a Winx lore essay for another time). It's not looking bad, I don't think, though it does seem to be suffering from an issue common to a lot of 3D shows where most of the time and effort goes into the character models and animation leaving them looking a bit jarring against relatively bland, empty environments.

Huntik I was aware of, but I don't believe last time I looked it was available to watch outside of OOP DVDs. I see it's all been officially uploaded on YouTube now too. That's going on the "watch later" list, nice one, Rainbow.

Funnily enough I actually own the S1 US DVD Boxset from Media Blasters of Huntik (they had it at a store at the open market, I also got Kyousougiga Discotek Media US Blu-ray there of all things!), but glad to know the second season can be watched on YouTube :)

Thankyou for sharing your thoughts on Winx Club as well, I just saw a cardigan of all the characters on Steady Hands the other day XP

Jem and the Holograms Episodes 1-46 - Still a banger of a show, I had seen the first half or so a few years ago and I actually appreciate it more now that I'm older - I'm not some crotchety grump who hates new things and I have seen US cartoon series made in the past 5 years or less that I adored, but this holds up very well as well, the episode about drugs is also quite well done and handles the topic better than I would have expected as at least it acknowledges that drug addiction can stem from emotional/mental issues and problems that need to be addressed, rather than "just say no" and nothing more.

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022 - the Netflix CGI animated musical) - With Friend B, way better than I would have expected and the script and story are true to the spirit of the original while not being slavishly faithful to the point of making the adaptation feel like an unnecessary retread. I also found the magic spirographs funny XD

Finished Jem and the Holograms, and I'm really impressed by how the show matured throughout it's run, yet it remains relatively lighthearted, entertaining campy fun with it's heart firmly in the right place. I'm really glad I took the time to watch all 65 episodes! :)
