General anime thoughts/discussion thread.

For all the great things about Takahashi's comedies, they can be very frustrating if you want progress. Once she establishes a situation or gag, it usually remains set in stone for all time. As much as I love Urusei Yatsura, it could be maddening for this, stubbornly refusing to progress relationships in any meaningful way even in the final chapter.

The only long-form Takahashi story from that era that had actual progression was Maison Ikkoku, and even that could spin its wheels a lot.
This has certainly reminded me of why I prefer anime series that are planned to have 12/24 episodes in a story, because you can be sure the story will progress during the time.

I've just heard of the anime Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions, Sounds pretty interesting, did anyone here like it?
First season is particularly good with the hilarious chunibyo denial scenes amongst other comedy and good character development for Rikka at the end. The second season is more of the same but I remember it being a shame that the protagonists' relationship made zero progress until the movie.

Thought I'd weigh in on this (again?) for kicks:
Although I'm more likely to just throw on Your Name these days TPPIOED is my favourite of his films.
Weathering with You is my favourite Shinkai at the moment
Mine is either Weathering With You or Garden of Words. The latter was the first of Shinkai's films I really clicked with. I always felt like he was trying to force his emotional moments before that, without giving things enough time to brew properly.

I'd also class Ping Pong as one of my three favourite Yuasa works along with Mind Game and Kaiba
Night is Short, Walk on Girl is my favourite Yuasa work.
being a Tatami galaxy fan I really enjoyed Night is short
Really interesting stuff.

I'm afraid that as much as I totally would've preferred to, I just didn't get on with Ping Pong, and I actually hated Mind Game. 😬
That's a big disappointment to someone who identifies as a Yuasa fan.

I'm with Geriatric hedgehog in being a big Tatami Galaxy fan. That had been my clear favourite of his since 2012(?) when I first saw it, until...

I saw Ride Your Wave at Scotland Loves Anime a couple of years ago. What a film! I absolutely love it. So, now, between that and Tatami...? No! Don't make me choose! 😅

I'd love to see Devilman Crybaby, though.

Oddly enough Tatami Galaxy is the Yuasa work I least enjoyed. Everything else I've seen (basically everything AL have released) I've really enjoyed.

I'm looking forward to seeing Ride Your Wave :) I'll be honest I'm not really into TTG or NIS,WOG either... I find the jokes where the protagonist is accused of being a paedophile utterly tasteless and disturbing and in TTG the female lead is majorly underdeveloped, though I know that Night is Short compensates for that somewhat by putting the focus on her. I got a lot more out of also college themed anime Golden Time tbh (and I like that waaaay more than Toradora because Taiga's violent behaviour is horrifying to me! More heresy lol). I would seriously recommend Kaiba it's utterly phenomenal IMO.

Oh also I was fairly lukewarm on Lu Over the Wall. Not really a big fan of how she's basically a child dating a guy who's much older than her.

Oh my god, really??? 😱
Lol yeah. It's hard to explain why but I didnt much like any of the characters and each episode being a new club routine got a bit old after a while. Also the impossible to read subtitles were a real chore for me. I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it more if there had simply been an English dub to enjoy.

I'd love to see Devilman Crybaby, though.
I loved devilman crybaby and I suspect you will too. Evoked Evangelion for me with its nihilism. I think it was after re-watching FMA:brotherhood then bingeing within a day or two all of devilman, elfen lied and your lie in April that I properly got back into anime heh.

In terms of other Yuasa works, I've yet to get around to watching Ping pong and mind game, wasn't inspired by Lu over the Wall(though I loved the scene with the grandad reminiscing about his mum with the music in the background, that alone was truly excellent), and I can certainly see why people may not enjoy Tatami galaxy as much.

I really liked Golden Time as well, but am opposite in that I loved Toradora more. Taiga's violence was just funny after a while and the poor kid clearly had issues heh.

i was thinking about getting different colour blu-ray replacement cases to replace one half the gundam UC series with 2 cases with red so it'd be a red and blue case and then doing the lelouch rebellion movies with red, blue (yes blue because they're all clear cases), green to go with the movie colours but annoyingly i can only find 11mm cases which is slightly too small because i think the ones AL used are 14 or 15mm so i'll have to try and track down some sealed copies of movies which have those 2 colours and hope they have tray clips in them

Finding replacement bluray (and for that matter dvd cases) for a reasonable price seems to be nearly impossible these days.

I’ve just gone to listen to a Berserk episode of ANN Cast which I haven’t listened to for some time and read that Zac Bertschy died a month after this episode was released. I’m in shock he was only 40. I kept reading it thinking I must have got this wrong. Sad news 😢

Im aware I’m a little behind here but I take big breaks from Anime so hadn't heard. RIP Zac

the suffering in my quest to get an Origin I-IV CE continues, some guy keeps reposting his listing on ebay of the 2 together and the specsheet on the back is in a horrible curled condition which makes me think he probably hasn't taken much care of this stuff

There's been a lot of speculation about what he died of-personally I think he got depressed and ate himself to death. He was already grossly over weight.

i didn’t know he was overweight. Always thought he was a skinny guy. I definitely think he was depressed by the sounds of it. Real shame nobody could help him.

From seeing him in photos, I thought he was looking healthier in recent years, but I think depression was mentioned. It does seem like his family didn’t want the circumstances made public, so I think it’s better to respect that and avoid any unkind speculation as much as possible.
