So you may have heard the news lately but here's the situation - super ecchi series Interspecies Reviewers was streaming and simuldubbing on Funimation for the Winter 2020 season (Kadokawa Pictures are the main licensor). The show was still the broadcast friendly version but even that didn't stop Funimation from deciding to pull the stream after only 3 episodes.

"After careful consideration, we determined that this series falls outside of our standards. We have the utmost respect for our creators so rather than substantially alter the content, we felt taking it down was the most respectful choice."

At the moment I'm under the assumption that they're dropping the rights to the series because of its subject matter, but for now it's up in the air on what happens.

On the positive side of things, the manga is available to read by Yen Press.

Well talk about not doing your research! I guess I'll have to find it elsewhere. Maybe wait till the uncensored blu-ray comes out, like Why the Hell Are You Here, Sensei?

I would say episode 3 did push some lines a bit. The anime overall adds way more visual risque elements to the show since in the manga it was mostly just implied from the written review at the end. I'm personally a tad sad since I enjoy Interspecies Reviewers, and was hoping for a US BD release.

I guess I'll have to either hope a european country releases it, or eventually get the JP BDs (maybe when they're cheaper used, or a cheaper BD box releases)

Like I said in discord: Since when does funi have any standards, they can not even release physical products without defects. Also nice PR statement.

Edit: typo

Regardless of what anyone’s opinion of the show might be, this is a horrendous precedent to set. Let’s licence a show, start broadcasting it then just stop because someone makes the decision that it’s bad for the company’s image. Maybe don’t licence shows you don’t want to be associated with?
We have the utmost respect for our creators
But not your customers, obviously. Otherwise you’d surely allow them to watch whatever they liked. What are they scared of exactly? Anime has a very good history of just steamrolling through controversy, it seems like an odd time to become concerned about it. Also a decision like this is only going to create more controversy.

Also this.

But it’s not like this has any controversy everybody knew it was trashy I only watched the OP two weeks ago cos I knew it was gonna be bad. It’s never trying to be anything more than trash so I don’t think it’s harming anyone. Especially when FUNi still has shows like NekoparA which has there own controversy and I’ve seen more complaints for than Reviewers.

Upon some quick research, it seems the voice actors for the simuldub actually liked the show. This is probably Sony's doing in a similar situation with Hybrid x Heart that occurred a few years ago (coincidently, both shows belong to Kadokawa).

I do think the show will see a US release eventually, but not through Funimation. Sentai Filmworks could work since they do have an Adult label if needed be.

Haven't seen any of it yet, but I'm sure virtually any other streaming service knew people were going to watch it, it can only be good for a companies image I think as interspecies is a bit of a joke series, in that, anyone willing to handle it will be simultaneously trolling and flexing on everyone else who doesn't have the spine to handle the series

I'll say this about the Elfen Lied manga too, it can be difficult to get someone to handle it, but once you have it, others will be kicking themselves for missing the chance to publish it.

It's a pretty big thing for the streaming sites to just drop a show this way, so I'd like to suggest putting some links in the original post, see other takes on the news

I'm still gonna say CR might have wanted Interspecies since they don't drop shows just for the content of the show, at least I haven't really seen them do that

Ain’t the point of a forum that we, the people are the ones who supply and discuss our takes on the news, Cap? I mean if Grav put all the possible opinions in the OP there wouldn’t be much to discuss. 😛

I mean, I’m fine with a company deciding it doesn’t want to be associated with certain content, no-one’s complaining Disney don’t sell porn (here’s where someone informs me one of Disney’s million subsidiaries is a porn producer, I actually wouldn’t be surprised) but to licence something and start releasing it and then decide that it was a bad idea and pull it seems pretty bad. Not just for customers who’d been watching but for the VAs who have presumably now lost a gig, and Funi themselves who people aren’t likely to trust with this kind of content any more.

Kinda a shame Funimation are censoring themselves with content. Though its not really something I would have thought Funi would pick up anyway so :shrus:. More of a Media Blasters, Crunchyroll or Sentai Filmworks title

To me the show has that 2009~2011 Ecchi vibe what should be watched like... without taking seriously at all

I do agree there, but I was just thinking links to a handful of articles like a few from MAL, ANN and so on, I guess there's Google if we really want them though. Just thinking a post from AUKN staff is only AUKN's take

It seems like funimation followed the 3 episode rule, didn't like what they saw and dropped it. This might impact their relationship with companies.
There is a thought that it's SONY's doing. They let Funi handle it the same way they do with any series, but maybe SONY wasn't aware of what the series was like until now, and they didn't want that image, so they ordered Funi to get rid of it.

I would like someone to come up with the skeletons in SONY's closet, they weren't like this until they moved to California and took Funi
