Full Metal Panic Discussion

Erm, putting my opinion forward on the matter, i can kind of see where Maxon is coming from by saying its not a "wacky High school comedy" as following the main story novels it leaves the whole high school comedy around the "End of Day by Day" novels, or as that may not mean much to some, at the time of The Second Raid. Full Metal Panic! leaves the comedy side of things basically altogether after the the novel following that part ends(A Dancing Very Merry Christmas), and becomes its sticks more to a mix of Romance, action and, quite obviously, Mecha. However! its safe to say in other respects that what you saw in FUMOFFU fits the description of high school comedy, and parts of the original series as well, though not as much for obvious reasons. Personally i can't see much of a comparison between Haruhi and FMP comedy wise even in both Light Novel series, bar that of both having high school scenes. Also i will admit not having seen Gun X Sword, but there we go. Keep in mind the FMP franchise is based off of novels, and not a straight to anime thing ;p

I've just started watching FUMOFFU and man; it kicks the **** outta FMP. The comedy is done tastefully. While over the top, its definatly pulled back, which is often harder to do than staying wacky 24/7

I laughed so hard when Sagara shot his gun and yells "BRING ME A PLAIN ROLL NOW".

This show is frickin' hilarious; although its more romancey than I thought.

Thankyou for the long anticipated "smart" and "reasonable" post. I appreciate it.

I understand that FMP is not a "wacky school comedy" like Azumanga Daioh or something on those lines of animation, nonetheless it does indeed show many traces of comedy with regards to being at aschool (otherwise known as "school comedy"). Being an FMP fan I can safetly say that this is not the 'main' source of the plot as of course there is the many episodes of mecha and action.

The only reason that I compared such a series to Haruhi, is not because the comedy is of the same taste or anything like that, but just simply because it was a school life comedy with a twisted and science-fictional plot. To be honest, anyone that denies the fact that Haruhi and FMP both posess traces of school comedy, mixed with science-fiction, is a fool, as they both clearly show both sources. I was not stating that they are exactly similar and comparable because of their basic plots or because they are both based in a school some of the time, but instead because of the mixed genres in which they both have. It is only because Haruhi did not have any mecha in it that I stated it was a tad like Gun X Sword too.

Ahh, see thats probably why i wasn't able to connect the two, as i was obviously looking far too deeply into comparing them than just looking at it as if they had similar genres. As said i can't compare both Gun X Sword and FMP, but i expect they will have similarities in the same respect Haruhi and FMP does then.

Well i've just sat and watched the first 4 eps of The Second Raid and i got to say, its pretty damn good so far. Glad to see some of my favourite mecha designs from the first series again. Looking forward to watching the rest of this series. Although i find the relatonship between two of the new characters rather...strange.

I take it you mean the twins? Yeah I had that too  though frankly, they're pretty strange characters.

Hah, the twins shouldn't even be getting that amount of screen time! I mean for starters
They only appear once or twice for short amounts of time in the novels leading up to the attempt on Kaname's life, and then of course there is the HUGE alteration in the fact that the Twins are actually male, heck the death of the one that attacked Kaname was even more gory too, all that was shown to his brother was his head, not the full body. Gates is an anime only character too. They added a lot to TSR, but i expect with Gatoh working along side them all the way through it was the reason why it worked

Okay just finished the 2nd and 3rd disks (eps 5-10) So far eps 6,9,10 have stood out. "Her Problems" was great for Kaname, seeing her use his smarts to get to Wraith, and then the attack by one of the twins. Although the introduction of the minature Arms Slaves was surprising, and Leanard.

Can't wait to see the last three eps, and to see if the pair actually admit to themselves (let alone each other) their true feelings...(i doubt this very much but no harm in hoping)

I've only got/seen the first series, FMP, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and not just for the fanservice! Good humour results in great laughs and the action and mecha elements are terrific.

It's been a long time since I watched it but Kaname was my favourite as she's spunky. I like that she kicks ass and isn't graceful and composed as you expect beauties to be. I also really like the range of expressions. The animators did an excellent job on her!... Ok yes, I really enjoyed the fanservice from her too! That doesn't make it a bias opinion does it?!

Well i finished TSR last night and i got to say i really enjoyed it, i admit i saw the reveal of the twin's sensei as being Gauron a mile off but it didn't lessen the impact of that scene between him and Sousuke. Loved the fight at the end with the Arbalest taking out all five Codarl/Venom's in a short space of time. I found Tessa's outburst at the end also amusing.

The main thing i liked though was the development of the characters, some people may question how Kaname got from japan to hong kong, but i'm guessing Wraith played a part in that at some level. For me though it was in her character to do something like that and to get it done, her reunion with Souske was no less as dramatic, clobbering him with a series of moves (one of which looks like a move from Street Fighter). There was still the tender moments between the pair once she had kicked some sense into him. Sousuke himself was no longer the guy he started the series as, it may of seemed like he was going emo but it made sense.

I also watched the OVA that was included in the DVD set, and found it a throwback to Fumoffu in a sense, with Tessa trying to piece together what she did the night before, although it all led back to sousuke...who showed that he was still clueless to what was going on around him :p

At the moment though it looks like the only way i can continue the series though is through translated Light Novels (if any exist) till another series is announced.

...I apologise for the large spoiler text above, i guess i should sum it up here. The Second Raid was awesome, i want more.

Really? Wow. Had no idea about that, dunno about the twins alteration but Gates was a fantastic villain IMO, they don't often make them quite that crazy.

Glad you liked it BlackWolf, indeed, I've been wanting more for a fair few years now. Just need to keep waiting.

Still waiting...

@FabricatedLunatic: Thats actually quite good, ok some people maybe put off by dubs, but FMP:TSR has a fairly strong dub in comparison to many. It does take away a little from one or two episodes though.

@Wildcard: Start waiting more for a new series from about..say...May i think. The last main story novel is due out at some point over the next few months, so after that is released, we could see plans for one not to long after. But we just need to wait and see.

Great. It's probably for the best that KyoAni wait for the story to finish and avoid the possibility of excess filler. I'd rather a long wait and a high standard follow up than a rushed out piece of garbage (Gunslinger Girl 2 anyone?).

I'll keep waiting..
