Full Metal Panic Discussion

Since I was reccomended to make a topic because of my moaning in the suggestions, I thought i'd make one, and even if no one replies, i'll just post my opinion after watching a chunk of episodes everytime.

So far i'mup to epsiode 7, and the first episodes have been good. I keep changing my mind about Sousuke's character. Art-wise, sometimes he looks great, other times, really poor. But the rest of the characters are really great throughout. I'm not sure if I like the fan service though. There are alot of Kaname panty shots, and a 'nearly see Kaname's boobs' scene.

Ah well. I'm enjoying it. Anyone else enjoying this series? Oh and if we're posting stuff crucial to the plot, can we keep it in spoiler tags?

//Edit// And because I was just stupid enough to spoil myself by reading BlackWolf's spoilers, if possible, can we put what episode it will spoil? That way people like me who are only part way through know what we're safe to read :)

I loved the first season, i plan to start rewatching it this week, and then hopefully move onto FUMOFFU and TSR. I enjoyed the mix of mech action and comedy, even if i wasn't too keen on Gauron turning up again, was a surprise though

FMP is one of those series I've never really warmed to much despite it clearly being very well received. I like Melissa and Kurz and co, just not the main characters.

We have season one and I'm casually keeping an eye out for cheap versions of the rest. I understand that Fumoffu is a bit weak on screen time for the [vastly superior] side characters - without spoilers, would Second Raid be an improvement from my perspective?

The first season great, as is FMP in its entirety, and i'll be honest, Gauron is still one of my favourite bad guys from the series, he's insane, and well..his connection to Sousuke is great too. Kaname starts off a little bland i think, but as she progresses, along with Sousuke and Tessa, they get much much better, and their characters a lot more interesting. Its a shame to be honest that the rest of the light novels are still to be animated, there is a lot to cover, and the series is nearly at its end, so its a good time to start it i think. I'd love to see whats to come animated, but i won't say whats what from that, just as i expect only a select few from here would have read the light novels up to the most recent one.

On TSR, when you reach it, i only have one gripe with it, and thats the assassins. I won't say why, but it becomes extremely obvious after reading End of Day by Day Upper and Lower novels.

EDIT(for Rui) - TSR is a vast improvement in terms of quality, story and character development. It leaves its more comical side behind and goes more for story and drama, which i think suits it better when it comes to the main story. If TSR increases your interest to the series, i'd recommend picking up the light novels, as they will continue past TSR, that is when we finally start getting them released past volume 3 =/

Are these light novels as in, text novels, or manga??

They are text with pictures, next time you are in a place like waterstones and they have the DMC light novels have a flick through and you'll see what i mean.

One thing about Gauron, and this is a final ep spoiler so eyes away Spyro!

In the dub he says he loves souske, so question 1) is this just the dub? question 2) is it a joke in his style?. In case memories need jogging he says it as he falls deeper into the ocean before blowing up

Maybe best if you look into what a light novel is on wiki, but yeah long story short, a light novel is a novel with the odd illustration. They are, as i've said many a time before, what the series are based off of, and the main story ones are getting a release via Tokyopop, but there was some problem with the fourth one. It was due out in december last year, but apparently was cancelled. That was changed to delayed, and it should be released in June or around then, i hope.

Oh cool. I was only confused cause I heard about Haruhi being a Light Novel, but I saw the Manga the other day

And dw Black, I shielded my eyes ;)

I'll type up more of my thoughts later, busy at the moment, but.. I've watched the first series before, now I'm currently watching FUMOFFU. At episode 3 at the moment. It's really great. Definitely the best comedy anime I have seen; I haven't laughed that much at an anime episode before, ever! I strongly recommend it already, even though I'm only at ep 3!

Is it just comedy, or is it a mixed genre anime? (Eg; Comedy/Romance, Comedy/Action etc.)

Also, whats the fanservice like? Lots/Little??

More/Less than the first series?

And do I watch FUMOFFU after the 1st series, or do I watch TSR??

FUMOFFU drops the mecha, as its generally the side stories of the series, and goes more for the romance/comedy and a bit of action. Its primarily comedy though. fanservice wise..there is more, but its on one of the more funnier episodes.

FUMOFFU is actually, as said, the short stories, or rather, a very select few. They are set after the end of the first story arc in FMP season 1 (hijacking arc) and before the TDD-1 arc near the end of the season. So basically, i'd just advise watching it after FMP!. TSR comes after those two, i think its based a a month + after the events at the end of FMP!

And that's not a good thing? We need a headscratch smiley.

@Rui: have you not watched Fumoffu? You really should. Having said that, your enjoyment will largely depend upon how funny you found the first season's comedy episodes. It's basically 13 episodes of that, only funnier.

And you're also doing yourself a disservice by not watching The Second Raid. As someone who was not impressed with the first season, I fully understand why you'd be reluctant to spend time and money on the sequel. All I can say is that TSR was one of the best things I watched last year and surpassed my expectations in every way. It's a much darker story, with some quite shocking violence, and its pacing greatly benefits from the half-season format. The three primary characters, who I'd once dismissed as likeable enough but ultimately shallow and one-dimensional, all have some truly excellent scenes and dialogue and over the course of the show they earned my respect. Also, both TSR and Fumoffu are animated by the talented Kyoto Animation and look far better than Gonzo's effort.

As a whole FMP! is my favourite anime, even though it may have it's flaws. The first season is not so amazing, but by the end of The Second Raid I was loving every minute of it. Not sure I can even give a rational explanation for why I like it so much, either way I'm desperate for a continuation.

Please KyoAni, within the next few years at least..

I enjoyed FMP, as a Mecha nut, i feel it could do with more of that. but as a whole i like it. The fan service tend to be in a light way not too pervy, I just hate the will they/wont they stuff... its like watching Mulder and Scully all over again...

I love FMP because in many ways the three series that so far have been made while retaining the core characters are all different in there tone and content. The first FMP series is a mixture of mecha action ,comedy & romance(my fav episodes of the first season are 15,16 & 17).The FUMOFFU series is pure comedy with some romance including a beach episode & a hot springs episode .( my fav episodes from this series are the rugby team and yakuza episodes  ).TSR is the third series and in my opinion the best of them all so far,all the comedy and romance elements from the previous series are dropped in favour of a more serious and darker storyline from start to finish. For anyone just starting to watch the show ,stick with it you won't be dissappointed. The first FMP series and the FUMOFFU series are both available on region 2 but the TSR series is only on region 1 so far and no sign of it coming out on region 2 anytime soon.
P.S sorry for the long post guys ,but I'm just curious what are your fav episodes from the series?

There's still hope that the series will come out, its not like its no popular or anything, its just Funi keeping hold of it. Favourite episodes...Well from the first season i quite liked the (Sorry Spyro i can't remember the ep number :p )festival at the miltary base where souske had to dress up to hide himself as he helped out :p I also liked the A1 episodes with Behemoth.

My favourite episode would be the 9th one from TSR - 'Her problem'. It demonstrates that the series doesn't just revolve around Sousuke and really shows Kaname up as strong and surprisingly self sufficient character. Plus the whole life and death moment where she's being stalked by one of twins was a hell of a scene - possibly one of the most dramatic and hair raising sequences I've seen in an anime. Brilliant stuff.

@fabricatedlunatic

Thanks for the comments. I'll bump it up my list a little based on that emphatic recommendation.

At least by the time I get around to it all they might be working on another series and I won't have to wait :D

They certainly have plenty to work on, thats for sure, main novels wise, about 6-7 after the final one is released this year i believe. Short story wise..about 10 novels? give or take a few.

@Wildcard: I have to agree, that episode did stand out to me as one of the best i'd seen in a long time as well. I loved reading that part in the novels as well, reading all the thoughts going through her mind at that point just adds to how well she develops in that time-frame.
