Fan-subs; the root of all evil?

If they really are costing the distributors so much then why dont they bite the bullet and shut them down? They'd save money in the long run right?
Uh, they really don't have enough money to do that. Anime distribution isn't the most profitable business in the world. Also, legal costs are absolutely ridculous, and if you're prosecuting fansubbers, who, as a rule, tend to not have much money, you're going to be getting next to no return on that.

Legal costs as ridiculous as some anime dvd prices hmm?

So to the people who cant afford to buy the extortionate dvd prices they're told to "go get a job", "get a pay rise" or "deal drugs" but when it comes to extortionate legal fees its alright for the distributors and we're supposed to feel sorry for them when they cant afford something?

A surreal line of argument but you see my point, perhaps the lawyer's fees are karmic payback on the distributors who charge extreme prices for such a small service - just like lawyers!

Prosecution of fansubbers is problematic on many fronts, not just because of the legal costs involved but also the very nature of the internet on whcih they distribute their wares. Being logistically difficult to prosecute does not make it right to distribute or download things and using that as an excuse to break the law does not equate even closely to the concept of paying for what you want. The prices are not extortionate just because you personally will not or cannot pay for it. Extortion implies that you are somehow being cajoled into taking a part in something, which you are not. You have a perfectly free choice of watching anime or not at all and nobody is forcing you otherwise. If you want to see somethgin you pay the going rate otherwise you don't watch.
