Fall Anime Season 2011

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon -

What I thought: This is a bit of a strange coming from the director of less successful SOL shows: Saki and A-Channel
Saki wasn't unsuccessful, nor it it slice of life*; just by Gonzo who died midway through, and it caught up to the source manga, so season 2 is taking a while.
Sales were 6k/volume A Channel ~4k which is probably past break even.

*it's a sodding tournament manga, at least half the time is spent during matches.

I watched Hunter x Hunter yesterday and now I am rather confused whether or not it is worth going on.

I had somewhat expected it to be sub-par when compared with the manga, however, I had not expected it to skip over some of the important parts of the first few chapters.

For example Kite's introduction and the fight between those guys, who are that hunter guys friends. The fight its self is still present but it is poorly exicuted in my opinion.

Hunter x Hunter is reminding me a lot of Dragon Ball Kai, except DB kai didn't cut out source material.

I would like to think the second episode will be better but...

Yeah... thats one thing that bothered me too but most shonen series get off to a rocky start (fairy tail) so i'd give it time.

Watched the first episode of Hunter X Hunter and let's be honest... it's for the people who gave Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger and FMA: Brotherhood 10/10 on myanimelist. Bare bones of the first chapter of HxH, no substancial reason Gon WANTS to be a Hunter besides his dad being a Hunter. I'm not being funny but HxH is leagues above the big three of SJ in terms of plot and intelligence and Gon just WANTS to be a Hunter? Also if they don't introduce Kaito or do a flashback then Chimera Ant has a big hole in the opening of it. The opening is decent enough, it's no Ohayou and the ending... Christ.

Hisoka's glowing crotch makes up for the crappy song

Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle

What I thought: While Sunrise might screw up with Horizon, at least my views on Phi Brain are the opposite.

I really like the concept of these massive, smart puzzles, giving them a sense of danger and tension that really helps this episode become more engaging.

The main characters have enough determination and teamwork when solving these puzzles to root for them.

Phi Brain is a 2 cour series so we will have enough time for more character development and interesting, fun puzzles, so sign me up!

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!

What I thought: In my view I could see this being the new Sekirei or Ikki Tousen and this isn't a bad thing because I thought the first episode was quite good.

Again I loved the concept, having school classes fight in a Edo Period style really reminded me of my Samurai Warrior gaming sessions, add to that the fun battle sequences and use of tactics, made the battle a bit more interesting.

I think my only gripes is that while the series started with a bang, it can easily go downhill and one of the commanders had me rolling my eyes.

Still i'm impressed and I hope we get improvements.

Just thank god it's no Battle Girls: Time Paradox -_-

Squid Girl season 2: More of the same as season 1, except not as interesting or funny so far, but I'll stick with it, it's a harmless series and it's fun to watch.

Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere: Full of generic anime characters and the entire first episode just throws an entire cast and the entire series history at you in one episode, poorly done but I found some enjoyment in it, even if it was terrible. The chasing/fighting section was pretty fun to watch, that's the most praise I can give it.

Persona 4: The fanboys will eat this up, but it was handled pretty badly, but a lot of people will use the "It's not for you." argument. The music doesn't seem to really work as well with the animation as it did in the game, but when Reach out for the Truth came on it was pretty hype. Too bad this show is going to be rushed so bad, condensing a 60-80 hour game into (an assumed) 25 episodes is pretty bad. Not a fan of some of the Japanese voice cast either, but Dojima still sounds pretty dangerous in Japanese so it's all good.

I think it was mentioned P4 was potentially going to be four cours, but I can't for the life of me remember where. Might have even just been a post I read on here tbf.

/end of useless post

Maken Ki, the manga is rather good, however the 1st episode wasn't exatly a very good selling point, i'll give it a bit more time but i fear it's going to be another ikkitousen

I'm on the understanding it's a 26'er but I think geting to the point as far as the first two hours is about the best thing you can do. Not much of a Persona series without Persona (case in point: Trinity Soul)

Ben-To -

What I said: David Productions did both Ristorante Paradiso and co-created Level E which were awesome, even if the show looks a bit fan-servicey, I hope it will be a good comical watch!

What I thought: While at first Ben-To does look a bit generic, it offers up an interesting idea of students fighting for half-price bento at a store, again it's seems to be a stupid idea but it's enough to be fun and entertaining.

Saito seems to be just an unfortunate guy of always attempting to get his discounted food and for that he is likeable so far.

Add to that one of the best sounding OST of the season (along with most likely Persona 4 with i've yet to see) and Ben-To could be a surprise for this season.

Mashiroiro Symphony: Love Is Pure White:

What I thought: Another Romantic drama offered by the same studio that brought us The World God Only Knows, is this first episode any good, not really.

First are main character looks for her sister who got lost on the way home, normally this would be solved in a few minutes but it takes the whole first half which is a bit of a bummer.

So the plot is simply are main characters with a bunch of male & female students from high school transfer to an all-girls school temporarily, so i'm expecting the same bland series that come out of this genre...

Still this is Manglobe we are talking about, i'm hopeful that I at least like some thing about this series in the future.

Guilty Crown was good but I couldn't help but think I got myself drunk and somehow put on both Utena and Geass on at the same time. Also, why is this on noitamnA? Besides the Production IG Pedigree, it doesn't strike me as a noitamanA show.

Persona 4: The Animation's second episode banished all my fears that I had for the show. It adapted the Yosuke arc pretty faithfully, had the main character emote a lot better (which makes sense, most people saw his summoning his persona as him loosening up, hence the unbuttoning) and used it's assets excellently (the one twist with the calender coming to mind). The Battle in the episode was good with only one instance of stock footage (Izanagi using Zio) and overall, if this keeps up, I think this could be triumph #3 for Seiji Kishi (Heard good things about Sunred, but I haven't seen it).

Do you not think it has a few similarities to the other action-y shows they've had this year? Seems to be the way they're going - have one "really" noitaminA show, and one "kind of has some artistic merit but is actually a bit balls-to-the-wall nuts". It's also one of the few programming slots where you can still expect to see anime originals, too.
