It didn't require them no, but most games were compatible, though i concur with the different gamer things, though obviously some owned both.

I gave the gamecube my best as it remains my favourite 6th gen console, but the lack of titles wore me down and I caved into buying a PS2 (cheaper, more of my friends had it, more titles that were ps2/xbox only, plus ps2 exclusives).

I'm definitely not regretting switching to the big green machine this gen. It's warranted the largest out pouring of my cash into games of all my consoles and I love all of them.
