Looks like I spoke too soon. They do say in passing that there is more to Manga than Hentai, but it's easy to miss particularly given that the guy they quote seems to think that all Manga is like Hentai. But then that's the Sun for you. No intelligent person is going to take the article seriously, although it may sway a few people who don't known anything about Manga or Japan.

It does illustrate the one area where Manga/Film/Games have an effect on people. It doesn't make a person more likely to commit a crime, several scientific studies have proven that. What happens is that people who were going to commit the crime anyway, copy what they've seen making the crime even more horrific than it would have been otherwise. Besides, you have to be pretty messed up to even be interested in the kind of stuff the article is talking about.
 
The Sun seems to be the only paper mentioning the manga though. I read the Daily Mail today and it had a big article on it but never mentioned 'hentai manga' once. Funny thing was my mum reading the article in The Sun and saying "Hey don't you read this stuff?".

I had to sit her down for about 10 minutes and explain the differences between the various mangas and animes, she's now a certified expert in the field.
 
The media always seems to blame one thing or another for these kind of crimes. Not that long ago it was heavy metal, dungeons and dragons and violent movies. Now it's computer games and manga. Next it will be drinking your tea with your left hand.

Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

I would be interested in your thoughts, particularly as the document mentions Japanese sites, I'm sure this is aimed at Hentai, at least in part.

Police have prosecuted people for Hentai as child-porn before - no conviction was secured and they are the ones pushing for this law.

I know many people here may not have any interest in hentai specifically, but there could well be some mainstream Manga/Anime which police may consider borderline in relation to this law.
 
Ok i wrote to much and contradicted myself

I'll sum it up

No research into the field means that there is no proven direct link between the two and hentai depicting undeveloped persons can not constitute pedofilia as of yet.

There is no threat to any anime or manga either since the current laws and the editing that goes on are sufficient to uphold any child rights.
 
Well I don't have any proof that Hentai is a target of this proposed law.

But I do know that attempts have been made to prosecute Hentai as child porn and failed.

Under this new law it is quite possible to fit Hentai and even some other Manga into the definitions given.

Any image of character that appears to be under eighteen, taking part in a sexual act (it doesn't need to be penetrative), will get the police excited, so to speak.

If you think none of this will affect you, fair enough.

BAN HENTAI.... It may effect you and put you in a hissy fit, but I be happy if that happens

but by banning hentai, how's that stopping them from banning shows like elfen lied?

Whether you like it or not, it's very borderline with hentai, and it's not like the police will hire an otaku to say "that's a hentai, that's not, that is"

Then ban Porn. Hentai is animated Porn so there is no case to ban it without its mother group. If anything there is more of an argument to ban Porn because it exploits people while hentai is using imaginary people dreamed up in some guys head.

I don’t like Hentai but I would be first in the 'No to banning hentai!' march.
 
I dont think banning hentai would do much anyway. People dont suddenly see something on hentai and think oh yes that looks like fun to do. The bloke may have been thinking of killing someone for a while and decided thats the way he was going to do it.
 
No one is going to 'ban hentai'. Why would they be doing that if they're not banning pornography?

Banning Lolicon and Shota is far moe* likely. And I can't say I care if they do.

If you are convinced that this will not affect you, then fair enough.
Unfortunately, I'm a bit more cynical I don't trust the police and barristers not to 'stretch' definitions to their limits in the hunt for convictions.

I'm certainly not going to rely on my own optimistic interpretation of what they mean by this. I have already sent a reply voicing my concerns over the scope of the proposed law, but a lone voice could easily be ignored. So if anyone here is concerned, you are perfectly entitled to tell them about those concerns.

Having said that, being 'caught' will be mostly a matter of bad luck, but the consequences are enough to make me wipe any borderline material off my drive.

Please don't think I'm trying to spread panic, this is just something to be aware of and if you do have anything to say to them about this, now is your best opportunity.

since when is elfen lied hentai?! nudity does not mean its hentai if you dont no the difrence go find out!
