Why in blazes has nobody licensed Bakemonogatari yet?
Because it is the biggest selling anime series in Japan since Evangelion, and probably commands a price to go alongside that.

I can't imagine Bakemonogatari and its friends will stay unlicensed for too much longer, one way or another. With companies like Funimation at least the longer they leave it the less likely they are to omit the later episodes or something daft.

Definitely interested in picking all of these Nisioisin series up when they do make their way over.

Great news. From that image, I'm guessing it's based around Shinobu?

Great, just what we need. More hipster garbage.
Next you'll be saying it was made in Microsoft Powerpoint and comparing it to Twilight. At least make an original remark.

I don't get why anyone would call it hipster.

My opinion on Bakemonogatari? "The Japanese are asking for more than what they could possibly profit with it in the UK, or US". It sold tremendously well in Japan, but the outstanding (and one of the best) character design won't have much of an impact here and in the US, or so I believe. I love the anime, though, but I doubt I would, had I watched this about 4 years ago when I had just seen a few dozens of anime and had yet to learn how to appreciate the art over the story.
Remember, Kenichi was Funimation's best product of 2009 (I think: year might be inaccurate). How do they compare? They are each other's complete opposite, in my view.

Yeah, Bakemono would be seen as a hugely otaku-centric show in the West (which it clearly is, to a certain extent), not even remotely mainstream despite it's level of polish (not that it has been finished) and clever dialog. In fact, the dialog probably goes against it and makes it seem too much like hard work for... er... idiots, I guess.

I don't see Bakemonogatari being a harder sell than Clannad, K-On, Soranowoto, and what have you, and presumably they must have been expensive licenses too (though perhaps not as expensive).

My lack of a region-free Blu-ray player means I can't even bankrupt myself by importing the Japanese BDs =P

I don't even think those shows would have cost *half* as much as I would guess they are asking for Bakemonogatari, not even K-ON!. OK, so I'm possibly exaggerating to emphasize my point, but I really think the difference would be significant. Volume 4 sold 48,000 copies on BD in week one. *EVANGELION 1.11* sold 49,000 copies week one.

edit: There's also the fact that show only just finished releasing in Japan, whereas K-ON! finished its home video release six months ago.
