Anime with aeroplanes?

Two of my friends are in the RAF, I just wondered if anyone could recommend a good anime with flying in it. I thought there probably wouldn't be anything with British aircraft in, would something like Area 88 be good to show them?
 
There's a Harrier in Area 88, and I think a Lightning as well.

If you want non-descript planes, but good action sequences, Sky Crawlers is out soon, well worth it for the pretty.

EDIT: Not a Lightning, a Crusader... I get those two mixed up. But there is an ep later on with a Buccaneer

If that isn't the type of aircraft your looking for, then I must say, you are out of your mind. Being more serious, I haven't seen it, but Last Exile looks like it might be a good fit.
 
Also Yukikaze, though with fictional planes, and Stratos 4, though the planes are generally used for a single specific purpose, so there isn't much variety in their use. And Porco Rosso.

I too was looking for some plane-based shenanigans some time ago and all those listed so far (apart from Strike Witches, which I avoided) are pretty much what I've found too. None quite went as far as the "plane porn" I was after. Though Area 88 had the biggest variety and some decent action I suppose.
 
In addition to those already mentioned there's a long forgotten anthology called The Cockpit, animated by Madhouse. It was released on VHS both in the US and UK but never on DVD, though you might be able to "locate" it "elsewhere".

Correction: it was released here on DVD as a double feature with the awful Digital Devil. Being a Kiseki release, however, expect an atrocious looking VHS dump with hard subtitles.
 
Apparently some of the plains from Stratos 4 are based on a series of experimental British planes.
Only other series i might recommend would be Macross Plus as it is probably the most plane orientated of the franchise, but the first and frontier are good as well.
 
Yukikaze is GREAT in my humble opinion - I was well impressed with the way the aircraft were realised in that, as well as the aerial sequences and the realistic radio chatter. It's one of my fave shows.

Plus, how can anyone not love a show where the aliens are called the JAM and live on planet Fairy?
 
Yeah I will check that out. There are quite a lot of anime here, haven't seen them all but I'll have to make a choice soon^^
