The decision to create a new series of Last Exile has been attributed to continued fan support since its first showing in 2003. Gonzo and Flying Dog are to collaborate in the creation of the new series that will incorporate the latest digital techniques in an effort to surpass the quality of the previous series.
The return of Last Exile also sees the return of key members of the original production including original director Koichi Chigura, original character designer Range Murata and composer Hitomi Kuroishi.
According to the announcement, this production will be set in the same world of Last Exile, but will follow a new story and feature new characters, and new mechanical designs.
Synopsis:
Before the confederation's aims to take over the world with overwhelming force, before the annihilation of the main forces of the collapsing Turan Kingdom, there appears upon a small flying boat a girl of the Sky Tribe, Fam.
Before the eyes of a decisive battle between the massive fleets, she shouts 'You men of the fleet, don't steal from this battlefield!! Choose!! Will we die here, or will we live long together!'
What are the intentions of the Supreme Ruler of the continously aggressive Confederation, Rusukinia? And, what of the mysterious power 'Exile'? The heavens set the stage a big flying action adventure.

OMG YES YES YES!!!

Okay - now I've got that out of my system, I'll say the common sense thing:

This is great news, but it would be BETTER STILL if the original series were to get a re-release. My box set is one of my most treasured possessions, and the show has that rare quality that attracts folks who aren't anime fans.

Thrilled that there's going to be more of this stuff.

It's supposed to be in 3D.

I couldn't care less about 3D, and I care even less about 2D versions of 3D media, where it's all about stuff coming towards, or going away from camera.

Much as I love Last Exile, this doesn't fill me with enthusiasm.

I have mixed feelings about this, as much as I think it's good news, it does highlight the stagnation of original ideas for studios like Gonzo to work on that the best they can do is take one of their past successes, re-write it with no connection to any of the original characters, or plot except it being "the same world". These "re-packaged" parallel stories don't always work.

Looking forward to it on my part.

Despite both soundtracks (released by Geneon) being out of print, they're still cheap on Amazon.

BAFTA's are on.

Just for the record. I couldn't give to shits about 3D. I'm just excited at the prospect of Last Exile coming back in some form. It's one of my favourites!

So much potential in the world and ideas behind Last Exile, presuming that even a modicum of effort is put into the thing (outside of the 3D stuff) it should be good.

Update

As Shiroi Hane points out character art and trailer are up on the site: http://www.lastexile-fam.com/about.html - and Dio is looking like an inclusion in some form or other.

Here's the trailer as well.
