I don't even like to get the entireity of a series if I'm not overly fond of the second half or whatever. I've bought Hellsing Ultimate 1 and 2 but have passed on the others. Same with Gundam 00, I've got season one, probably won't buy two, but I need to rewatch it to be sure. It's not that either are bad, but I've realised that it's senseless to spend a lot of money on something that you think is "only ok" rather than "great" or "very good".

(Back on topic, how about top 10 strong women in anime? This does not exclude fanservice characters since a woman can be strong AND fanservicey, but not all fanservice characters are strong women... Also strong doesn't necessarly mean they fight either.)

In no particular order

1. Sumeragi Lee Noriega - Probably one of my favourite female characters in an anime, like the rest of the Ptolemy's crew, she's flawed, but is still a tough woman and brilliant strategist
2. Kaname Chidori - Despite being non-military she's perfectly capable of handling herself, even without her whispered abilities (whatever happened with that it kind of went nowhere after FMP! 1 =S)
3. Milly Thompson - Though not outwardly especially brave, she's fiercely loyal and has a great inner strength with becomes especially apparent towards the end of Trigun.
4. Caska - Obvious reasons
5. Motoko Kusanagi - Again, obvious
6. Astuko Chiba/ Paprika - Somewhat dubious considering she gets the damsel in distress role a fair few times, she's still a very capable and strong-willed character in a man's world.
7. Integra Hellsing - Badass head of the Hellsing organisation and an incredbly formidable personality
8. Haruhi Fujioka - Kind of put her here just because I think she's a decent non-fanservicey character, I mean all the characters on the show sort of fetishise her, but she herself is quite plain compared to standard shoujo fare and has no problem telling the Host Club to shove it when they get rowdy.
9. Cornelia li Britannia - Warrior princess, absolutely the strongest female character in Code Geass.
10. Revy - Another obvious choice.
 
The issue with that one is not so much "how many times have people done that one before" and more "you already did it earlier in this thread".

Can't even really think of top ten villains, let alone ones I feel sorry for. Most of the anime villains I like are irredemable heartless bastards who revel in mass murder like Ali Al-Saachez , Ladd Russo and Legato Bluesummers.
 
some villains dont start off evil some villains have a really bad past that makes them do the wrong things.
or after a while you get attached to them you feel sorry for them and you want them to win.
or they dont know any better and the things they do is all they know.
or they have reasons why they do bad things from our point of view.
or the things they do are for the great or good but not agreeable to most people.
or they believe in something they believe is the right way.
or they got caught up in something and didn't want any part in it
or they was forced in to something and they had no other choice
ect ect ect the list goes on
i sympathise with villains

theres another word for villain and for the hero

2 Lady Diamond - speed grapher she want to be beautiful for her dead husband
3 Priscilla - claymore her life was all messed up
4 knifes - trigun he believes humans are unnecessary and believe he can create a better world
5 Suigintou - Rozen Maiden she just wants to be loved by her father
6 sasuke - naruto he family was killed by order of the village elders
7 mr carpenter - R.O.D tv series he wants to make the world a vetter place
8 the twins and Yukio Washimine from black lagoon tragic pasts
9 half of the villains from naruto - some was brought up to be who they are it not there fault

I'm not saying it's impossible to be sympathetic to villains, I was just saying I can't think of more than a handful myself from anime. Other media, quite probably, but not really for anime. In anime I prefer my villains to be Ax Crazy Complete Monsters :p thus I'm going to draw up a list of unreedeemable and heartless villains in riposte in order from least reedemable to possibly redeemable :p.

2. Ladd Russo (Baccano!)
3. Gauron (Full Metal Panic!)
4. Ali Al-Saachez (Mobile Suit Gundam 00)
5. Lil Slugger (Paranoia Agent)

I grant you Light is a dodgy one, since he began with good intentions but once we get into the series proper he's clearly just mad with power and "justice."

to be honest yeah i agree i want my villains to be heartless basterds that would kill and destroy but i cant help feel sorry for some i prefer evil bad asses that you wont feel sorry for or get attached too. like cell or frieza there just evil
 
FRIEZA! No villian can ever be better then FRIEZA! Especially with that weirdly feminine voice of the dub. None of the DBZ bad guys could ever live up to him/her(?).

IMO you've listed classics rather than shows for newbs AF, I mean Naruto and Dragonball, fine, but Evangelion, FLCL and Lucky Star aren't great for a newcomer, since they either require familiarity with the genre, or are just plain bizarre and might put newcomers off.
