Anime on UK TV; yet more speculation

  • According to its official fansite, OBAN Star Racers could well be set to air on ITV's GMTV. Unfortunately no more information has been provided. OBAN Star Racers is a children's science fiction adventure cartoon that is well known in the anime community for being yet another successful French/Japanese co-production.
  • RaptureTV have begun broadcasting TV adverts for Elfen Lied and Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, thus increasing speculation amongst fans that these two shows are soon set to replace Fullmetal Alchemist and Mezzo DSA on the channel.

I still haven't seen OBAN yet, but it does look pretty cool. Yoko Kanno OP too! Getting on GMTV is quite an achievement.

As for Rapture; I'd be amazed if they picked up Elfen Lied, it'll certainly make an impact!`

Elfen Lied is a potentially controversial choice from what I've read about it. FUMOFFU on the other hand would make for some great entertainment - we need more Bonta-kun on our screens! :)

I really liked elfen lied but either they would have to edit to death or show it past 11pm eiether way isn't gonna go down well.

though full metal panic :D

I wish rapture would come on ntl >.>

The BBFC don't seem bothered about Elfen Lied, its managed 15 certificates across the board so Rapture will be able to get away with it at 8:30 or even 9pm - given how viscerally offensive the first episode is though, I wonder if OFCOM will step in.

Well someone in the nude(sexual or not) apears and rips a guards head of slashes another one in half this is in the first 2minutes...

Mums got angry at eva becuase it an angel having its arm broken they will go of the wall at this

wouldn't surprise me about Oban.

Pucca is set to go to ITV, and seeing Totally Spies, Jackie Chan, Martyn Mystery and W.I.T.C.H all made it from jetix to terrestial tv it's highly likely.

I'm surprised they'd show fumoffu before the original FMP. Granted the first 2 vols take place early in the manga, the later 2 wouldn't make sence unless u've seen the original, specially with tessa

At least the 'Anime is just for kids' assumtion will go straight out the window with Elfen Lied. I think its a good choice, see how far they can push UK TV before they step in.

I dread to think how Elfen Lied will be managed. It is quite explicitly gory, with nudity thrown in for good measure, which would be hard to justify pre-watershed. The potential for a backlash is high.

Elfen Lied? Who thought that was a good idea? Ok it's got alot of acclaim but agree with above. Backlash likely >< And did they have to test TV so soon when anime is doing so so. Couldn't they have waited till fever pitch?

Backlash = Controversy = More Viewers. I agree that Elfen Lied will offend a lot of prudes, but I think its possibly a smart decision on Rapture's part if they are looking to make a real impact. Elfen Lied is all about impact really. It won't do much to remove generalisation that anime is all sick ultra violence, but it should easily pull in channel surfers.

I'm a little worried if it's Eflen Lied... I mean I like it but for UK TV.... oh dear... I was hoping for something more along the lines of Last Exile or Noir for an ADV show.

I'd say episode five would cause the most commotion.

If they only cut one scene it’s going to be that one!!

I’m impressed that they would show Elfen Lied, it shows that they are well prepared to raise the bar. And although it was seeing Ghibli films that woke me up to anime it was EL that got me hooked on it.

You have to rember or though controvesy creates cash it could also cause a miscontiception of anime which does more harm than good.

When on sci fi they used to show late night hentai movies people saw and thats what they think anime is.

Imagine if horrific violence is assoicated with it just 15 angry letters usually gets something pulled of air imagine how many elfen lied would get

Then agian getting fmpf with it is also a good choice to lighten the mood if they show it after elfen lied.

It's not that i support this nanny culture in the uk i just think you need to becareful what you show.

well considering most non anime fans consider it to be either kiddy cartoons or violent cartoon porn (or if it's ghibli film, disney)

i really don't think it would do too much damage to it's current reputation :(

Is it just me or was Elfen Lied not quite as shocking as is often made out?

Perhaps the child abuse scene (which is not exactly graphic) is worthy of editing but most of the violence is somewhat fantastical and therefore isn’t so shocking. The nudity isn’t really sexual nor detailed and is but a mere brief distraction from the story. Oh and the ‘dog’ scene is a bit close to the bone but apart from that it’s not that bad.

Or maybe I’m just completely desensitised or mad?

But I agree with Ryo Chan, the reputation of anime has little to lose right now.

Elfen Lied can show that it is not always for kids and nor is it animated porn.

It’s a bit of both!!

i absoultly hate horror shows like hellsing for example but even i quite enjoyed Elfen Lied

Apart from the as put child abuse, the worse part i saw of it was The dog being killed which may have to get cut

UK is a nation of animal lovers after all

I agree. The most shocking parts were the child abuse and the killing of the dog not the over the top violence which just passed me by without any thought. It's probably the realism of the former that left me kinda stunned.

Cool, more anime I'm intrested in for quite a while. I always look at the trailers, makes me wanna buy them, but end up spending on games, Chrono crusade and choclates/Coca cola from shop.

I'm gonna miss FMA though. I hope the FMA film shown on rapture before it get released in UK. If the dvd came out first, I'm gonna be first one to the shop
