UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I guess if anything those who buy special editions tend to be the more hardcore types who will use specialist retailers. The early bird sales must be a pretty decent slice of sales for some series, assuming that the people on this forum don't make up the entire purchasing audience, because quite a few of us seem to jump on those. I don't think it's right to assume that people up for a budget release are necessarily the same audience (with the same purchasing habits) as those who buy CEs.

Loving the recent revival of interest in Gundam in the UK; there was a time when it seemed as though it was never coming here at all. This is becoming an AL/Gundam combined thread lately :D)

In any case, I need to get The Tatami Galaxy ordered! I'm also really interested in how Ouran does; I know it's a favourite in the US but it's never had a proper release here (Manga's messed-up DVDs don't count as they made the picture so wonky). The Erased DVD pricing looks quite good.

Why is Tatami Galaxy so expensive?

Because it's easily the best series on the list and will be release of the year :3

(I don't know.)

On the topic for The Tatami Galaxy, here's the Japanese Blu-ray Disc Box for comparison:

So many CEs, my bank balance hurts just looking at that list. I like a good CE as much as the next anime obsessive, but I'm starting to think there are too many of them now. My budget is only £100 per month for BDs, manga, games, etc and with all these fancy releases about I can no longer afford to buy most of what I want. I know I know, first world problems etc, and I know I could just buy standard editions but... the fancy editions are so shiny. I certainly won't be buying any more figures this year, that's for sure.

Tatami Galaxy Price is a head scratcher, unless it is given a Space Dandy-esque release with plenty of artwork, a nice fat book etc

A nice strong schedule from Anime Limited with pretty much everything on my want list(outside of FMA, Pigtails, Belladonna of Sadness and Genius Party).

Yeah I'm in this boat too, I just happened to realise that a) I don't need everything b) I don't need everything day 1 and that makes things easier. I add every AL release to a personal "purchasing back log" spreadsheet and i'll just try and whittle them down as I go through the year, the only problem is, new titles will likely be added to it quicker than I can knock off older ones!

Yup, I use an Amazon wishlist instead of a spreadsheet even though I never buy anything from Amazon (actually a spreadsheet sounds like a better idea, I should get one set up), and the 'anime' list just keeps getting longer by the month. So much anime, so little money.

I'm the same in that I wish list what I want on Amazon.

I'm terrible at spreadsheets.

I too have an amazon wishlist where I check the prices on various blu-rays, games and other things and buy them when they're cheaper / I have the spare cash.

That being said, I will wait for regular editions for some of these things. I'm interested in watching the old FMA series, as I haven't since Brotherhood became a thing, but I'm not paying that much for the two halves of the series. Hopefully it won't be too long for a cheaper, no-thrills set to come out, like what happened with Cowboy Bebop (which probably isn't a good example, because I did actually buy the two special editions of that...)

No mention of Beck or Ass Class Part 2 in the newswire. Are they both still due this month? :)

I love the PP2 Movie art work, cannot wait to finally watch it.

I hope Beck is this month, but AL usually post a shot of the packaging or something a month beforehand so the pessimist in me is saying that it's been delayed again. Saw it's only £20 on Amazon too. :O

I can't help feeling this should be called "Pigtails and Shorts" or perhaps "Shorts and Pigtails". I suppose that might give a different impression, although I don't know if the title "Pigtails" really tells you everything in the first place.

There are quite a few things I'll probably be aiming to get from Anime Limited coming up, I'm generally interested in movies/shorts and the like.

I was hoping I might be able to confirm those today in the Newswire, but wanted to play it safe rather than giving incorrect info. As things stand (and as far as I'm aware) we're waiting for BBFC'ing to be completed on both.
Beck never had a full release over here so there's still some of the series that's needs to be certified.

All going well I reckon we'll know more this week or if not, then in time for the Newswire next week :)

Playing it safe is always good, especially as you don't want to get people's hopes up. I'll be keeping an eye on the BBFC listings anyway since I'm bored.

I also ordered Samurai Flamenco Part 1 so once it arrives I'll get Part 2 by making use of the early deal. ;)

Anyone who knows me from elsewhere online (Hi, Andrew!) won't be surprised that it's this discussion that finally got me to register here. :p

My usual opinions tend to echo a lot of sentiments here, so I'm actually going to jump in at this point:

anime_andrew said:
Ah okay, it'll be the home video charts - which only captures:

A) Domestic sales
B) Major retailers

So what isn't included are:

A) All the Anime.com sales (we have a healthy sales channel there actually and appreciate the direct relationship with folks)
B) Event sales
C) Smaller retailers (people like Anime-on-Line etc don't show up)

So when you add it all together there's a good chunk of sales that don't show up.

OK. That's actually going to be quite telling.

Like it or not, "Major Retailers" took a hit when the high street stores all took a dive a few years back. With only one real major chain and even it having to scale back a bit (HMV literally downsizing stores in some locations like Guildford), collector editions just aren't going to sell well there. Leaving it to online retailers.

So you'll have your Amazons, Zavvis, HMVs and the like, but it is the direct and smaller retailers that are likely to get a fair chunk of these sales.

For Anime Limited CEs and UEs, it makes sense to buy directly from alltheanime.com owing to them often having early-bird discounts. And even if you miss the discount, there's sometimes just something nice about ordering directly from a distributor rather than a huge faceless corp. (Unless you can't easily get parcel deliveries larger than a jiffy-bagged amaray and only live a short walk from an Amazon Locker)

For MVM, again you have the option of buying directly from the distributor via anime-on-line.com which also carries the advantage of often shipping their pre-orders out ahead of street date as soon as they're in stock.

So that gives a major incentive to buy directly from two of the UK distributors rather than through channels where the sales data is more officially and publically captured.

Then you factor in Event Sales.
Sometimes discounted but, basically, right there in front of you. And in a way that you just don't get in HMV, who sometimes just put out a placeholder amaray than actually having the real product for someone to have a decent look at. Plus, at an event where if you're seriously scouring the dealer area then you've already decided to spend a chunk of money on geeky hobbies.
(Unlike in HMV, where you might wander in on the way to/from spending a significant amount on new/replacement clothing or appliances - damn this "responsible adult" malarkey!)

That's how I got my FMP set. I was at MCM London last October. The set was available at a reasonable price but, more importantly, it was there in front of me. I'm no fan of big collector boxes but seeing something up close can really help decide whether it' value for money in a way that photos on listings just can't.
So I bought a series in a big fancy box... whilst wearing T-shirt that says I don't care about fancy boxes. Yes, I was well aware of the irony.

So, yeah, when comparing sales data it looks like Jerome only has bog-standard retail data to go on. Which is probably quite representative of standard editions but looks like it really doesn't cover a rather significant chunk of collector sales.

(Yes, yes, I know. my post count here will probably be low but my word count... quite likely wont!)

I'm happy to spell it out on this one - it's a collector's project and a labour of love but it's not reallly a mainstream show and we had to put a tonne of work into making the release.

Factor 1: I have to author those discs myself from scratch. (+2 on cost)
Factor 2: It's constant dialogue, subtitles cost a lot of money. (+1 on cost)
Factor 3: We're translating the extra feature of 30 mins interviewing everyone - which is super cool but pricey. (+1 on cost)
Factor 4: It also comes with a 60 page artbook put together from the Japanese assets we retrieved. (+1 on cost)
Factor 5: It also comes with 4 beautiful art cards using illustrations from the character designer. (+0.5 on cost)

Add in beautiful packaging using artwork never used on a western release and is the first BD release in the English speaking world and that is why it is £69.99 instead of our usual £59.99, to cover the costs above basically and deliver fans of the show the best possible version.

Hopefully not so head scratching now! Should have artwork to share in the next two weeks :).

See answer I gave to Britguy, also applies here ^^.

TL;DR - That stuff takes real effort and beyond anything a normal title requires, so instead of a £59.99 SRP it becomes £69.99. It's a premium effort for a top notch show there really in the end :). Would love to keep it lower but again authoring ourselves is a huge volume of work - mixed with subtitle complications and translating a new extra.

I can imagine you explaining this as fast as the dialogue used in the show.

Hope that it does well for you, it's no secret that you're a huge fan of the show, so much so that you've brought this show to us twice now. The first English BD release is a huge thing, no idea how you pulled this one off! :p
