UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I won't actually be buying Ping Pong from Anime Limited for the reason that it's getting the barebones treatment in the UK while the Japanese release looks amazing. It's a shame really, as i absolutely fell in love with the show.

If the Japanese Blu-ray box gets priced down a bit on Amazon Japan i'll pick that up instead.

What price range would make you buy the Japanese one....

If it drops below 20K JPY i'll be all over that ( ̄▽ ̄).

I agree - I think special editions should largely be reserved for titles that are 'deserving' of the treatment, eg. highly rated/regarded shows that hold a place in anime' history. Otherwise the whole concept starts to lose its meaning if almost everything gets a souled up edition.

I can't agree less with this. Special editions are meant to add things of value to the physical release, such as exclusive interviews with staff members, specially made artwork, CDs with BG music and character songs, artbooks with production materials and so on.

I can't see how adding those wonderful things is something negative. I don't believe for a second that special editions become less special simply because more titles are given the treatment as each special edition is unique to its own title.

But if you don't care about that extra kitsch and just want a good quality anime it's a hefty premium for stuff that holds almost no value to you. There's usually plenty of better quality stuff out there for most major anime's anyway as it seems like the merchandise market for them in Japan is insane so those who want something a bit more can get it. Most of the time they don't seem worth the extra to me but I'm fine with limited editions the way AL handles them so long as i get my standard release.

What I do hate though is the supposed LE junk released sometimes (like Manga UK's rubbish Captain Harlock steelbook release or the ghibli blu-rays that have a couple of post cards.)

Pony Canyon USA are key offenders in this respect - they're basically using the hardcore who are willing to shell out around $200 to get all three volumes of an arguably mid-tier show like Denki Gai, because they know they'd get way more that way than just putting it all in a standard $30 set and leaving it at that.

Paying £120 for a lavish set of all three series of a difinitive classic like FMP is one thing, paying $200 for a show that back in the ADV days would probably have been forgotten in a couple of years time is another.

I would agree with Lutga on this. While obviously it's good for each title to be given the best release possible, in a world of finite resources and finance you should put more effort into some over others. Like I'd want more extras for Jaws than War Horse for example or then original Mobile Suit Gundam over Reconguista in G.

EDIT: edited back in my original comparison, since I was quoted!

Like I'd want more extras for Citizen Kane than an Adam Sandler movie to use an extreme example.

You're being incredibly mean, War Horse is not the Rec G of Stephen Spielberg films...

Having not seen Rec G, my comparison was purely based on original classic/not so well received newer work.

Though I am a firm defender of most of Steven Spielberg's work but I suspect I should profess my love of his films elsewhere...

Not sure I can massively get behind you on this one Lutga. Sure, there are definitely shows that are unanimously considered classics but I dislike the idea of not seeing nice LE releases for shows that aren't legendary classics. For example, I love Kiniro Mosaic as many of you know. Do I consider it an Anime Classic? No. Do I still really love it? Yes! Would I buy a really nice LE box set of it? Absolutely! Just because a show isn't as highly regarded as Evangelion or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or something doesn't mean it isn't entitled to a nice home release.

It's what they've done to the games industry now & it's a joke. I think most people will only buy LE's of shows they've seen & loved so they do a lot to alienate new viewers.
The games industry comparison is interesting, since they always release a standard edition at the same time I don't see why it would bother anyone that there's also an extra costly Limited Edition with a soundtrack or whatever. I could understand if there's a difference in the core content (like making OVAs Limited Edition exclusive, though some might argue that'd still be okay) but complaining about a product that's not for you when there's one that suits your needs perfectly seems unreasonable.

I guess that ties into the other issue. Every show is special to someone so if a company can put together a special edition of a show and sell it to enough people to make it worthwhile then I don't see that it's a problem (assuming there's also a regular release, which is a different issue). I'd totally buy that Kinmoza LE (with Ayaya hand-puppet, you know you want it).

If we're talking "special edition release of Kinmoza and no release of Nichijou vs standard only but for both" then I'd prefer both shows but I'm not sure it'd ever be that simple in reality.

I don't know if selling at the higher price will always be better, more profit per sale most likely but you might miss out on so many sales that it ends up being an inferior option. It's always a bit of a guessing game. I'd probably buy Denki-Gai if Anime Limited released an LE at their usual price (though I suspect I liked it more than average).

Since Anime Ltd have Miss Hokusai, here's the Blu-ray artwork coming to Japan on November 26th later this year.

Gundam part 1 looks to have slipped to the end of November?

It's not slipped - it's just matching the schedule Sunrise would like and the date that went up on Amazon before was a tentative one (sorry!)

Thanks Andrew.

I really must learn to take the Amazon dates with a pinch of salt! :D

In this instance, given how heavy September and October look like being, the later date here is actually a help anyway.

So the latest newswire went up and here's some important notes:

- Mobile Suit Gundam will not include Episode 15 "Cucuruz Doan's Island"
- All the content is to be exactly the same as the Rightstuf version and release dates is aimed sometime around the same time as the US date.
- 009 Re:Cyborg is still set for September
- Podcast is still going ahead with a special guest!

It's a shame Sunrise won't let them include the episode as a bonus feature or something. Just because they didn't want it included in the series, doesn't mean they had to prevent it from being released entirely overseas. Not a lot AL can do about that though...

Also, as an aside, why do a blog post on Snow White With the Red Hair, a series that isn't even streaming in the UK? Seems like a waste of time.

I was thinking the same thing, then again it could randomly appear on Viewster.

Agreed. I presume that the diktat comes from Tomino, but bizarre more than anything else. Sure, remove it from the episode listing but what's wrong with a bonus feature or easter egg? Anyway while I understand the reasoning that the Japanese may have more nostalgia for it, thus it's included in their release, Sunrise must know that anyone that really wants it internationally can get a hold of it through alternative means (though, equally, I suppose that could support their decision to not include it).

Nevertheless, I'll still be getting it but I do like to moan. :p

On the Shinkai front - is the Shinkai Collection (w/ 5cm + more?) still on the cards or is it 'just' going to be a The Place Promised In Our Early Days/Voices of a Distant Star twin pack (though 'just' two of the best animated films of all time is a big 'just'!)
