UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I have learnt that part 1 of assassination classroom is 1/2/4 NTSC however part 2 DVD is 2 PAL. Andrew why did you do this change halfway throughout a series and without telling anyone?
A BD combo PAL DVD is bad enough but this release is someone choosing a DVD, they should expect the same standard as the first part.

Pal DVDs in 2016 lol good grief, how silly. Anyone own any of the other Funi shows that AL have released on DVD over here? Curious if it's just a one off or not.

*Seems this was answered as I wrote my post. That's ridiculous, even as someone who won't be buying the DVD I feel I have to say that it's a real ****** thing to do.

That's pretty crummy. I wasn't going to be in the target audience for Nourin either way, but I hope backwards PAL conversions don't start happening regularly; the similarity to the US release (in terms of specification as much as dates) is part of the appeal of the whole Funimation project for me. If it happens to any DVD-only titles I'll be back importing those.

Too late. Apparently Assassination Classroom part 2 is similarly afflicted.

Um ok, switching my AssClass pt2 order to the US then when I get around to sorting my life out. Andrew, please pass our feedback to the relevant parties. PAL-converted DVDs have no place in the modern world.

Ended up switching my order to AL, and taking the £25 loss. I guess it saves me a £19 train journey if zavvi was able to take a different payment method on payment failure.

Switched it also to say FU to Zavvi for having a crappy system.

Now to debate if I should get escaflowne... I liked the show, but is it 100+ liked

Hmm I think retailers are nicer than Andrew lets on.

It's not retailers I worry about - if a listing is up you cannot guarantee 100% they will revise it and if they don't to reflect the changes then either:

SCENARIO A - Fans expecting both formats complain and demand refunds, retailers have to give them for trading standards and so do I then. We lose money and reputation with retailers as results and reputation loss for those fans.

SCENARIO B - Price is not revised after to reflect new listing but the listing is updated. Everyone complains they are being gouged as a result. Anime Ltd lose sagain.

If we are lucky it all goes right - but once listed separating products is a complicated affair for multiple reasons (new approvals for packaging as all changes need approved, new products and barcode listings go up and the old listing ay well be outright cancelled etc).

So the best move is to start afresh on the new slate of titles for the retailer and the consumer even if people want more immediate changes :).

Hope this makes sense!

Andrew

I have to admit, I can imagine the PAL stipulation and combo pack pricing potentially killing the Funimation releases in the UK - the PAL thing introducing delays and the pricing scaring off casuals (who are the prime target for Funi shows).

I kind of talked about this a bit before, but while I'm generally fine for delays of Anime Ltd's own titles as it means they're getting the quality right, the Funi delays bother me far more as there's such a significant backlog of titles now - especially ones that are arguably 'more important' titles (eg. Yuri Kuma Arashi and High School DxD)

We're looking to split them off down the line now and more importantly, for Assassination Classroom, we've had no notice of change so I assume it is a mistake on the packaging esp as Part 1 was NTSC, so let me check :).

Best,

AP

Good to know! As annoying as it must be to have to do both a DVD and Blu-Ray release separately, I get the impression the market does still respond to that to some degree - I think I remember even seeing some people who still bought DVD editions just because they were cheaper. In my eyes, separate ones are always preferable to combo packs.

Yeah. As a Blu-ray user, combo-packs are a nice option for specific scenarios but, as a general rule, I'd rather not be lumbered with an additional disc I don't need.
And as more and more people are getting Blu-ray players, simply as they're cheap enough to be a direct replacement for failed ageing DVD players, and with laptops either having BD drive or no optical drive at all, there's less of a reason for Blu-ray owners to have that DVD backup copy.

I used to look for combo packs of anime to show my girlfriend and for family films to show my brother's kids. But as they have Blu-ray players of their own, now, it's far less of an issue.
