They can be a way of getting around places that require you to have a US card to purchase stuff online, too.

Isn't the problem with those kind of sites that you have to have a US billing/shipping address though (such as buying direct from AnimEigo)? In which case I'm not sure how pre-paid cards could help. I don't think I've ever come across anyone who would accept a US Visa card but not a UK one.

Dunno, you can use a re-shipper to send it to within the country you're buying in? But yeah, much more of a problem buying from Japan than the US these days.
