Anime Boxsets

Just wondered what everyones thoughts were on some recently released boxsets.

I've purchased Mushi-Shi Complete Collection (a few weeks ago now) which was the same size as a normal DVD case, which has saved me tons of room.

Claymore Complete Collection arrived yesterday and thats quite small also, its about the size of a normal case and a quarter (again saving room).

Whats your general thoughts? Do you like the packaging? Do you like the size?

Personally I prefered the Claymore one as it looks and feels like a boxset, where as the Mushi-Shi CC looks like its just one volume.

It seems you didn't get the Mushi-shi artbox, then? I loved that, it looked (and felt) pretty beautiful. From Revelation's artboxes, I only own Beck and that's pretty awesome.

I'm more a fan of the artbox really. Some of these newer boxsets, seemingly what the Claymore one is like and the Death Note one, are quite sleek and sexy. Much better than the old M-Lock that used to get chucked around in ADV-Days, so I wouldn't exactly say no to one of them if I'm looking at it. Fullmetal Alchemist's re-release in that form is pretty great, IMO.

So, either a big artbox to store volumes or a digipack like FMA. Both are great in my eyes.

NO.

A nice card digipack is best. Space saving, good quality and feels like it is actually worth something. I don't steal anime available to buy in the UK, but if there's one thing which tempts me to download rather than buy it's ****** packaging like plastic bricks. If I'm not getting much more except a plastic case and a paper insert printed on one side, my only reason for buying becomes to support the creators... and I'm this close to just grabbing the fansubs and sending cheques to Japan.

Stealing anime that is not available to buy in the UK would cost more than simply ordering it online because to steal it you would have to go to somewhere abroad that is selling it and shoplift there, or rob someone who has imported it here.

Why does the packaging matter so much to you? Surely it is the content of the discs that matters above all else?

Gotta agree with Jayme, I love the art boxes but I normally wait until someone is selling a complete artbox set rather than collecting the individual volumes.

I hate the viridian sets they release now - packaging matters a lot :p

I... do hope that was sarcasm Mutsumi. That or you are somewhat naive in the ways of P2P.

Packaging matters to me because when I feel I'm not getting something I enjoy owning for my money, I'd rather not have paid for the cost of the disc mastering, duplication, BBFC fees, plastic box, piece of paper etc. and just had the files on my computer. Basically if they are just going for content, then they should just sell the content via download - but not in crap quality or costing more than the DVDs as per iTunes - where's the sense in that?

Honest to God, I spend more time looking at my DVDs than using them.

I don't really care what the boxsets are like as long as they are small and have some decent artwork on them.

To save room I even created my own case for my Region 1 Cowboy Bebop singles and slotted them in a 6 DVD Case.

Probably the best quality one I have is the MVM Samurai Champloo box set but i'd prefer it to be smaller.

I've said before a few times that I just want DVD's rather than a pretty box. But I must admit, I really like the MVM box set packaging they use. I like the sturdiness and the looks. They can be as big as they like.

If i buy a boxset i expect it to have lots of special **** in it, hence why i normally only buy collectors / special editions of things. Why would i want a boxset which looks like 1 volume, it needs to be big and badass.

It honestly doesn't really bother me how the shows get packaged. I quite like the brick-thick collection boxes as used by folks like ADV. I do wonder sometimes why it is that certain packages get used for certain shows, though.

I mean, I bought Yukikaze (GREAT show!) and Starship Operators to watch before Xmas. Both have the same number of discs, but one gets a slim digipak case, while the other sits in a brick. Bizarre!

The only ones that really get my goat are things like Zone of the Enders or Gundam 00 - those things take up FAR too much shelf space the way they're packaged. Would it hav ekilled someone to do put them out in thinpaks?

Artboxes are nice, big piles of DVDs look good, but I'm running out of room!!

Eureka 7 takes up 10 spaces!!

I'm the flipside, I don't like carboard foldout stuff. IMO the Gurren Lagann normal release cases are not very nice. I have shelves and shelves of normal DVDs or box sets with the title on the spine and then there is TTGL... They look out of place.

Art boxes are nice, but they aren't worth the effort or extra pounds required. I'm at a point where I really don't give a toss about boxes - I care about the content.

It felt good getting and filling my Air Gear box in one go, and recently completing my Desert Punk and Fafner sets also left me feeling good. But, if given a choice, I'll take a cheapo complete collection release for both money and space reasons.

I pretty much have no space. I now have art boxes on top of each other. I also have three huge stacks of anime DVDs, each next to the other, touching the ceiling... on a unit that's only around halfway up my wall.

I like having nice artwork and decent packaging.

My only problem is I've got no room, and as a student travelling regularly between home and uni, the discs barely spend any time in the nice box, they immediately go into a folder of discs, and the boxes go into storage as soon as I get home.

Honestly I can't wait to get my own place and get all those boxes out and on shelves again.

Similar thread with some interesting discussion.

I like art boxes but they do occupy too much space--especially the ones that hold full-size DVD cases. So it's both a positive and negative thing that the days of the R1 art box are just about numbered.

Funimation's thinpak sets are popular with me because they contain plenty of artwork and take up little space. I also like the two-panel digipack with slipcovers that Viz use for Honey & Clover (and probably Nana). The multi-disc keepcases are the Kwik Save no-frills brand of the DVD packaging world, but if the release is cheap enough then it'll do.

I like compact artboxes; either filled with thinpacks or for shorter series which don't take up half a shelf on their own. If it's a series I really love, then I'll pay more for a flashy chipboard box with extras. Otherwise thinpacks and a pretty sleeve to keep them together do the job.

I prefer thinpacks to other options as they tend to disintegrate less than other types in transit generally, aside from my When They Cry set which used the most brittle plastic ever and my flimsy Ranma cases. And if they do get damaged in transit, I can just replace them with sexy clear ones since they're a standard type of case. Much better than full sized DVD cases where floaters can go bouncing all over the place before they even reach my doorstep. I like digipacks when done well but have an awful lot of dodgy ones, and if the clasps break or they get scuffed there's nothing you can do at all. The thicker sleeves most modern digipacks use is a definite improvement over the earlier ones.

I think it stands to reason that whilst your not watching the anime. you'd like your collection to look atleast to a nice standard or at the very least look presentable. I've got to say that the newest addition to my collection is rather nice and different to the rest of the boxsets i own. The orange DBZ boxset reminds me of the FMA silver sleeved boxsets. It holds 6 discs, has a slot for the little info book and when folded p it goes into a sleeve that covers in on all sides leaving only the top or bottom as entrance/exit points for the boxset itself. I thought it was different,a nice differece though.

I'm in the process of getting rid of artboxes of series I don't like that much. ie. Fantastic children.

I might end up giving them away if one wants them. All my DVD's are going into a DVD filecase, and their covers / booklets / etc into a A4 binder. I'm amazed at the space it's saving me.
