A whole new era for the physical distribution of anime? Yes!

The absolute worst is when it's high contrast shows (black/white areas) as the technology can't keep up with my eyes and I get huge streaks of colour everywhere ruining the picture for me.

I was going to recommend Pioneer's 9th generation plasma's with their massive contrast ratios, but I guess that would not solve any problems in this case. (And they cost several thousands!)

For anyone who's interested, there are comparisons of the Patlabor Blu-ray and dvd on this page: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews34/patlabor_blu-ray.htm

I won't deny I was quite impressed with the difference. I don't have anything against the blu-ray format, it just annoys me because I never expcted I was going to have to re-buy things I bought on dvd - so I've bought hundreds. As such, I'll be waiting this round out because direct download (or SuperHD or HigherResolutionThanRealLife) is probably not far off.

Indeed..........I think most people are saying blu-ray is not going to takeoff like DVD did.

Kireek, thats due to the fact that the price of a Blue-Ray player is comparable to that of a PS3, and as some see even the £200-£240 40Gb PS3 that not only has a blue-ray player but is basically a firework of media in a box too expensive they aren't really going to spend money on just a Blue-ray player.
When th price of the player and the stupidly high prices on titles starts to drop, thats when blue-ray will probably take off.

blu-ray will be more like Laserdisc. A better quality but more expensive format existing beside a more popular cheaper one.

It's already here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4320p

EDIT: From all the screen comparisons I've seen, viewing HD from a source that is natively HD (or able to be HD like cells) is like viewing something down a binoculars with absolute perfect resolution, whereas viewing the same object in SD (DVD) is like having the focus substantially off.

OMG, The end of blu-ray is nigh

Bloody Hell. There we go then, I'll wait for that. ;)

Why don't some scientists just work out the maximum resolution a human eye can actually focus on and then just create a format that matches that. Though presumably once picture quality gets that good we'll start enhancing human eyeballs in order to keep up.

suprisingly enough the human eye's are the comparison to 5megapixels, so everything above that is, in truth, a waste. it only becomes usefull when zooming in, so the purpose for higher definition is....unknown

Hah that's exactly what I've wondered about actually.

Been doing some research and I've found that a human eye has 576 megapixels [Sources: (1), (2)]. Of course that's going to not be completely accurate - probably far from it...

Doing some maths... :

The resolution of a DVD (NTSC) contains 345,600 pixels (720x480) [480p]
HD 720p contains 921,600 pixels (1280x720) [720p]
HD 1080p contains 2,073,600 pixels (1920x1080) [1080p]

This isn't really getting anywhere close to ~576,000,000 pixels

UHD 4320p contains 33,177,600 pixels (7680x4320) [4320p] - apparently Japan want to start using this properly by 2015... So we've got a hell of a long way off until we start seeing something that is as good as reality, but you have to admit we're getting close (specifically a seventinth of the way there by 2015), and the amount of pixels is increasing quicker in a smaller amount of time, so it probably won't be too long... I saw an article yesterday (source) actually on a camera that can take pictures of 50 megapixels in quality, so that's even closer.

I tried working out the dimensions of a 576 megapixel image, but I failed, so meh.

EDIT: Nearest resolution 30720x17280 [17280p] =around 530 megapixel
Next better than eye = 38400x21600 [21600p] =around 829 megapixel

I'll be waiting for 21600p video I think =)

Note: Resolutions in 16:9 widescreen ratio.

I'm considering a blu-ray player now.... and if I'm at it, why not a home theater system =P
I'm serious about the player though =)

The Odeon cinema in Gilford, Surry has the only one of these in the UK. I've yet to see it, but |I'm told by my coleagues who have that they didn't realise they were looking at HD vision until one of the staff told them what it was. It was that close to 35mm film.

I wouldn't imagine they have a 4K cinema, seeing as you need fiber optic cales to get the huge amount of data to be screened at the bitrate required... and 22.2 surround sound to boot, and a ridiculously huge screen.

You're talking about Odeon Digital, yeah I'm struggling to see how it's actually different from Odeon Digital. It certainly is different to what's talked about on that Wikipedia page. Who knows...
I've been to Odeon Digital cinema's too, there's one in Hatfield. They're great :p

EDIT: Bleh, I'm too tired to think - going to get an early night

That's exactly what it is, which is why it's the only one.
Agreed, but I think it is just as daft not to include SD-DVD as well, especially if this is some sort of test to see if this concept is actually profitable.
Anime industery daft??? Thats like MVM realeasing a 2 episode disc of FLCL at the same price as mangas deathnote with 8 episodes ON THE SAME DAY..................oh wait

Oh and another thing i bet them realeasing flcl on the same day as deathnote hit flcl sales pretty hard..........should have realeased it on a different date. But no doubt (and forgive my sarcasm) if mvm were ever to go under they would soley blame fansubs as to why flcl didnt sell and no other reason.

I was one of those who bought FLCL rather than Death Note. I don't think that getting death note or FLCL is an exclusive thing though.
