UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

So Whisper Of The Heart is coming to cinemas mid September but no news yet on Hathaway. Which potentially suggests late September, so a month after it's been on streaming.

Simultaneously AL are running promotion for Godzilla and whilst I understand you'd want to push the sequel to the Oscar winning movie made by the studio that now owns you, that's not slated for until November.

Apparently a new Toradora Blu-ray got announced. Feels like an AL kind of pick-up.

As the office's resident "will shout about Toradora at every opportunity" person, it does, doesn't it...

(Also I've been away for a couple of weeks, and returned to a mountain of meetings (can meetings form a mountain?) and work backlog to catch up on, some of which I am now avoiding by catching up with you lovely people instead! 😉

TLTR: Any eta on when/if Macross Frontier and/or the first Sheryl-focused movie are coming, or is that a non-starter? Granted, I'd prefer Blood+ and Mark Mancina's OST (it better come with it as an extra, and that be the delay!), but still...

Macross Frontier is very much coming and in the pipeline - it's a big project that has had some cool plans bolted to it which means it's taking longer than we initially forecast by some distance, but we really want to create a release that's worth the wait!

Given there's only about a week left in August, hopefully info is incoming for Hathaway. It drops on Netflix on 31st so hopefully it's not long before we get all the specifics for theatrical. This has been a weird release.

Needless to say the Netflix release date curveball has caused us to have to scramble to realign everything (we've effectively had to start over on discussions with cinema chains too), so we're pretty hopeful that this is still happening, but we're currently trying to secure the when and where part of the release. Was hoping we'd have news this week before it drops on Netlifx, but with any luck we'll have things confirmed next week.

Apparently there was a 'press' screening for Kiki's Delivery Service.

Really starting to worry I've managed to talk myself off the radar for stuff like this. They've done a bunch of such screenings in the last 12 months and I only hear after the fact 🫪

Like most of these kinds of screenings, this was a public screening where we held back a small number of tickets for press/influencer coverage. Needless to say, for something like Kiki's Delivery Service the focus there is firmly on broader film and family audiences and raising awareness amongst those groups, rather than anime fans who already know what a Kiki is and why it's good. 😅

Long story short, we only ever have very limited tickets to these kinds of event and so we have to be very targeted with who gets an invitation - it's a "boring" marketing strategy decision rather than a popularity contest at the end of the day, so we invite people who are the best fit with that in mind. :)

Ah, so as I speculated it was a case you guys got a raw deal.

I don't really blame my boss from the BEI days losing his fandom. As he put it, working in the kitchen on this franchise is unpleasant.

@Hanners - Please can you report any progress as to where in the pipeline the Blood+ release is at now? Since this title is going to be a highly sought-after release, I'm really hoping it gets some sort of Collector's or Ultimate packaging, or a steelbook!
Nothing much more to note than I've previously reported - it's in progress, but it's been a long-running process to get all of the materials and everything together. We're getting there step by step, and we'll share more once there's more we're able to!

OK, Thank you very much for the update! I must have missed your previous post about that. I'm extremely relieved to hear that it is definitely in progress; I can breathe much easier now. I'm still so disappointed about We Rent Tsukumogami, which never got the release I was so pumped for when you originally announced that license - especially because it never received a physical English release elsewhere.

Oh, and if Blood+ ends up getting a CE release, I would love to see a digipak used rather than an Amaray case. Digipaks seem to be getting much more scarce in your Collector's Editions, so I'll put in a vote for that! :)

I can see how some might find it silly and I know that A) not everyone likes them and B) AL have other considerations when it comes to these things but I echo this.

It just doesn’t hit the same when it’s a amaray in a slip cover.

(Also, more D-d-d-Digimon pls 🙏)

Yep, I really dislike digipaks, though not as much as steelbooks which I absolutely despise.

But I'm also generally happy with standard editions so I'm fine with either being used in CEs that I'm typically not going to buy anyway. I will buy one if I find it to be nice to my tastes, but if not I have no problem with a standard instead.
