The Evangelion thread

^ Is the reaction to this news one of "malding"? I wouldn't know as the only anime forum/space I use is this one so I've so far seen a total of about 5 reactions to this news and no malding. But you can't really blame people if their response is a little muted to the news of another 90s anime getting resurrected for the second time.

Anno may have been open about leaving Eva open to other creatives but it doesn't change the fact that that creativity might be better spent on creating great new IP than flogging tired old ones. I'm not denying that this could still be great, mind you.

I'm seeing a lot of negative reaction to this on Bluesky. The reaction here actually seems pretty decent.

I wouldn't call this a resurrection though given it was always the plan to follow up 3.0+1.0 with more projects. I do get giving that film the tagline "bye-bye all of Evangelion" may be confusing but I always interpreted that as Anno's goodbye to the series rather than a full stop on the franchise as a whole.

As for new IPs I don't really see this as too big of an issue either. While I love a good original I think it's nice to also have some familiar shows in the anime landscape like Gundam for example. That too started out with a main narrative that eventually branched out into the many AU spinoffs we see today. While much of Khara's output is split between Evangelion and other adaptations they've also got a history of supporting originals as shown in their Japan Animator Expo, one episode of which was eventually expanded into their The Dragon Dentist movie. Wouldn't be surprised if we get something original at some point.

Yeah, I’ve seen a few negative comments, but mostly I would describe the reception as mixed to positive.

I’m completely fine with them doing other stories in the universe or as AU content, my only thought is that I’d rather they go for an all new cast of characters than coming back to Shinji, Asuka and Rei et al. Unless it’s Pen Pen.

Anno should move onto Rebuild of Nadia!

I absolutely hate the original Evangelion but like Yoko Taro; the only way this will have any appeal for me is if it's just something entirely different in the same universe, with none of the same characters and a completely different style of storytelling.

Yoko Taro is at his best when he can do 100% what he wants to do. I can't see that really being the case here.

My first impression on reading this news was that it's a bit too early for April Fool's. Eva is my favourite anime and Nier automata my favourite video game, though that doesn't necessarily mean I would want them mashed together heh.

Anno did leave to the franchise open to others to work on so that's not surprising and Taro is a fantastic first shout, though I would expect more to get Nier based in the world of Eva, which still has great potential I feel. That trailer looked great I must say. I too just hope they don't go back to any of the original characters, Anno has finished that story and arc in his life and laid it to rest I hope.

On another note, I was very happy to see the Eva 30+ short officially released by Kara, giving the best character in anime or any fiction in my opinion, a comedy closure if nothing else:

It only got officially released due to Khara messing up the DMCA takedowns of the cam rips, whoever filed them attached the full short in 4K to the notice.

I thought it would be a kick in the teeth to not release this for fans the world over who couldn't attend, so I was being optimistic in assuming they eventually would in some way, shape, or form, but if this means they did so earlier then all the better for it heh

Yoko Taro is very big on the interactivity of his stories. People liked the Nier Automata anime but it was always a very odd project, because a lot of stuff that makes that game and Nier interesting is very hard to translate. My takeaway from Taro's work is that he is perfectly willing to work against the audience's expectations and even the wider franchise he's created. Either for drama or a good laugh. My concern is that he is a hardcore Evangelion fan and the influence perpetuates throughout his games. So I don't know if he'll allow himself the freedom to do that. Or if Studio Khara will allow him to do so.

Incidentally, I find it very strange that this is a coproduction with another studio. I'd assumed that once The Eva Rebuilds were completed we'd begin to see Khara can make on their own. But this and Gundam GQuuuuuuX show that isn't the case. Are they just splitting their resources between EVA and the Battleship Yamato movie or are they just not capable of making a 12 episode mecha anime on their own?

While not mecha Khara have also done significant work on Kaiju No. 8.

I'm not too sure whether that's related as it also happens to be the 5th anniversary of 3.0+1.0 and they also cite this in the announcement. This date of course could also be an incredibly convenient one to pick but either way I wouldn't say with such certainty that it's because of the leak. Correlation doesn't equal causation as they say.

I don't think it's too strange as Khara had already collaborated with CloverWorks on their VOY@GER music video, likely as thanks to Atsushi Nishigori given his role as chief animation director on 3.0+1.0.

Could see the new series as a "hey remember how we helped you out on this project?" kind of situation like the back and forth between Yostar Pictures and Trigger.

Anyway, definitely recommend VOY@GER. Fantastic music video

It very much is, Khara released a statement apologising for the leak.

They then posted the YouTube link and asked people to watch it there instead of the rips.

Here's a much better version of this-03/10 WebFolder. Unfortunately it's limited to 3 downloads so if you want it-first come, first served.
