UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Certainly better than being bought by Sony, that's for sure. Toho's European releases haven't been very good so far, from my understanding (the HeroAca movie), so at the very least, that should resolve that particular problem. And lately, it feels like more than anything, AL has just been competing with MVM for Sentai titles, so in theory this opens a few more doors instead.

That does indeed sound like it could be good for everyone involved!

some quotes

Koji Ueda, President and Representative Director at Toho Global, said: “This move accelerates the timeline to realize the ‘Toho Vision 2032 Group Management Strategy’ by giving Toho an immediate pan-European distribution capability as well as access to Plaion Pictures’ highly additive infrastructure for merchandise operations. We look forward to working together with our new team members and partners to bring amazing content to fans in the UK, France and across the continent.”

Anime’s Partridge added: “Both myself and the team have long loved working together on Toho properties, as evident from making Godzilla Minus One, the best Japanese live-action box office hit of all time in the UK. We look forward to becoming part of the Toho family and working closer and more collaboratively with its group companies to expand the interest of anime across our territories. I look forward to continuing to work with Anime Limited both during the transition and from my new role at Toho’s European regional headquarters.”

Stefan Kapelari, Managing Director of Plaion said: “Anime Ltd is exceptionally well positioned in the anime market,” adding: “The sale to Toho creates entirely new growth opportunities for Anime Ltd. in the UK and France through strong synergies across content, distribution, and marketing. We would like to thank Andrew Partridge and the entire Anime Ltd. team for their dedication and outstanding collaboration over the past four years, and we wish them every success in this forward-looking new constellation.”

Does Toho have any conditions or quirks for a Japanese company owning a western company?
I mean for now nothing change but in the future...

I read BNA and Uma Musume in the Toho wiki page :nudges @Hanners :
Uma Musume sounds neat but I would be surprise if AL can get BNA, thought Netflix would not release it on Blu-ray as its something they own for their streaming offerings.

If this leads to more Godzilla releases I'll be happy. We don't have any of the Heisei or Millenium series (apart from Biolante).
New editions of the Showa movies would be great too, especially for the ones that had terrible film-splicing problems on the Criterion set. I'd also love to see some of Takashi Yamazaki's other movies get a BD release; the Always Sunset on Third Street trilogy is based on a manga, so it's adjacent to Anime Limited's remit.

In the short-term, hopefully we will see a UK release of the new deluxe edition of Shin Godzilla.

Well, if it means I can get English language (Japanese) content in France I'll be happy. Maybe I'll even un-cancel my AL membership.

I might be wrong but if I remember right the reason we don't have the heisei or millennium series is because the licence is still tied with Sony and criterion have just been waiting for the individual licenses for each film to expire so if that's right there's not much toho can do.

It depends what territories Sony have licensed the rights for. There might be hope if they only have the US rights.

If there's even the slightest chance we get even a basic release of shin kamen rider and shin ultraman ill be the happiest person alive that day.
Shin Ultraman, although Toho distributed that in Japan, I think the licensor might be Tsuburaya (the licensor of the Ultra Series), but I could be wrong, as it was jointly presented by Toho, Tsuburaya and Khara. Shin Kamen Rider, on the other hand, is a Toei license.

Right! I tend to forget every so often that Ultraman is the seperate entity in the Tokusatsu big three. That said, I was always a Kamen Rider fan first, so even if we only got a basic standard Shin Kamen Rider release I'd still be happy with that. My 4K set is great but has no subtitles so its a pretty hard watch.

Given Toei's investment on global expansion in recent months (especially on the Tokusatsu side with the new Kamen Rider series being simulcast globally for the first time in it's 54-year-long history), I'm gonna cross my fingers that a release can happen and that the Godzilla Minus One release wasn't just a one-off because of it's popularity.
