So What's Your Avatar Pic?

I can hear Saber's voice now, too, damnit... although I mix it up with Chaika/burai! girl's voice. 🫨

Changed my avatar, inspired by this thread/ 🎅. My prev/usual avatar is of my namesake, Aion: a charismatic white-haired, forever smirking villain from 2004ish anime, Chrno/Chrono Crusade. I got into anime 2002, so he stood out to newb me with his unreadable, cunning tingymajig. And as I'm not fond of change, stuck with it. Kindasorta. Aion, Aionic, AionicTonic, Aironic, Aironically, AironicallyHuman~ Opted just go with Aion on 'ere, and use one of few decent pieces of coloured art of him since exact name usage. Simples.

His theme of sorts from the anime really resonated with me; the start has an... emptiness I've never been able place. It had a wonderful soundtrack, OP/ED inc.

Looking back, it was a unique series, with quite a lot of depth/tragedy, despite being daft/having fanservice. Set in 1920's America, with a gun-nun protagonist, and her demon sidekick that betrayed his own kind. Everytime he uses his power, he - Chrno - drains her life via a clock-locket she wears, hence the misspelt in Japan 'Chrno' part of title/naming. Maybe?

Doubt many know of it nowadays, as the series was lost to the ADV abyss: they licensed both anime/manga. Never got big given manga short, anime diverged, and author not that famous. Triple whammy.

But I digress: my new/xmas avatar is the vol 4 manga cover. Don't think 'tis actually xmas-themed, though the festival lighting looks that way. The anime did have a Christmas episode given religion a part of story (Mary Magdalene is actually in the series, in a flashback), girls in santa outfits and all, but eh: not my thing. 😤

PS: I look forward to Dai's essay about how he came to name himself after Goto.
PS2: I loved those ADV thinpak box sets. Get Backers~

I do actually know Chrono Crusade - have seen the entire anime once (English dubbed, IIRC) and would quite like to read the manga as well :)

Cum to think, a lot of people in their 30-50s on 'ere. Few on MAL would know of it/younger fans though. Think it on Amazon/Prime, all the same.

Glad I not only one that remembers--was worried I'd be mistaken for an ion tbh. Crossed mind as posted its Romeo/Juliet aspect would make it appeal both sexes. It's been decade(s) since watched/read but the manga differs greatly last half/few vols. Delves into Aion/Pandemonioum. Still manages end in gut punching way, albeit not to extent anime. Might be worth a read. Maybelline.

I love that anime too and was very glad to eventually get it, during a previous AL Christmas sale no less😅, though I didn't know about the manga differing at the end. Now I'll need to read that for sure.

Also second the great score and op/ed (especially the ed) for that.

  • Watch the anime until the end of the "Assault on Pieta" arc (around episode 21 or 22).
  • Begin reading the manga from the end of that arc or starting with Volume 5
The divergence leads to vastly different second halves and endings for the two versions, with the manga having a more detailed and expansive narrative, and the anime providing a distinct, self-contained, but more tragic conclusion
^ 'Tis what Google AI answered when asked, which goes vaguely with memory: after end of v4 diverges, and although I thought closer to the last third where anime differed, guess it only the last 2-3eps (pretty sure was some filler earlier in the anime, too).

The manga was still on-going when the anime made, so seems they simply cut-off where the manga goes into Aion's/the sinner's motivations (and explored Chrno's relationship with Aion), plus went all-in on R&J tragedy. That iirc left Aion rather... ambiguous. Think implication at very end of anime ver was that he was God, testing his disciples. Or something. Where as in manga he had some reason I've long since forgotten. Deffo worth revisiting anywho, as half the manga totally different. Forgot all about that AL re-release as I stopperd buying DVDs eons ago, and have that lovely ADV set.

As for the OP/ED, I do like both: the vocals and beat in the OP had this upbeat, almost ethereal vibe that I've never heard anyhing else like. In the ED it's more downbeat yet soothing. But rather than ED itself, what stuck in my head was what became the preview music in the last few eps, 'Chrno's Sorrow'. It traumatised my young anime self.

Glad that makes 2 people that know what an Aion is. If either of you do ever read the manga, you'll have to let me know how it holds up. Really has been like 15 years 🦔
