UK Anime Distributor MVM Entertainment Discussion Thread

My Aniplex Bunny Girl set just shipped today from RightStuf, so I will receive it probably by Wednesday of next week - that one cost $99.98, or about £78, so £48 for the MVM release isn't so bad...
Worth noting that for us Brits, it would be either $99.98 + $12.73 shipping + 20% VAT + £8 fee or $130.98 + $12.38 shipping depending on whether we go for Rightstuf [£111.60] or United Publications [£113].

So yeah, having MVM pretty much clone the Aniplex (well technically Madman) release helps.

The MVM release is a no-brainer, unless you’re my brother and need the Weiss Schwarz card.

Unfortunately though, it turns out like many of my favu 2000's anime - Gankutsuou, Bloodlust, etc - it was created digitally at 720p, and upscaled to 1080p. I didn't know this and was hoping the 5th at least being made in 2008 might look sharp. Noticed it looked a little 'fuzzy' straight away, and a quick Google confirmed it:

You do realise that almost all of the current anime are not composited at 1080p, right? Most now are composited at resolutions at 720p or higher, and rarely at full 1080. Actually, Garden of Sinners was composited not at 720p, but around 540p which is half that of 1080, exactly like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

Gankutusou was composited at 480p, and Bloodlust (if you're talking about Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust) as composited digitally at some resolution I don't know, but as the original files no longer exist (or something to that degree), a 35mm print was scanned at 2K for Discotek's BD (which AL replicated).

Absaloutly true. I think it's only the theatrical kind of stuff they'll ever do at 1080... virtually everything else is 720. The japanese have a social code to socialise more, hence, not many in japan actually spend on expensive home cinemas or even consoles

This is why I am content, with the DVD release. If Recalled Out Summer were included in the BD box, it would have been interesting since I don't have that one.

I am sure MVM have done what they could to get Recalled Out Summer, it's more than likely Aniplex that are being odd about it.

It could perhaps get a single release down the line in the UK.

Does MVM have a December sale kinda like AL have their 12 Days? If so, do MVM sell intl. during their sale, or is it UK and IE only as AL?

If I remember correctly they did have a sale last year, and yes they did ship internationally.

Edit: Not sure about this year, but I hope they do have a sale.

I would expect them to, though if I remember rightly they dont always start on the same day as AL.

I think last yr AL started on the 1st and MVM on the first Friday of december.

Yes we'll be doing a sale! Usual discounts and bundles. And yes as answered but we also ship internationally! Naturally with the run up to Christmas it's expected for international orders to arrive a bit later. We're planning on it starting on the 9th.

Excellent. Thanks for the info.

Garden of Sinners just arrived, so glad I gave up chasing the OOP DVDs a couple years back. But it looks like someone forgot to fix the font for the titles on the spine for chapters 5 & 6. Barely matters but still a bit of a shame.
