Ronja, The Robber's Daughter ep 9-10. Wow, that was an amazingly powerful couple of episodes. Shifting from the simple childhood joy of messing about in the snow, to the sense of isolation and vulnerability when Ronja gets her foot trapped in a (creepy) creatures burrow as the snow gets deeper around her, and then that harpie shows up which just intensified everything ten-fold and added fear to the mix. It was terrible to watch that harpie sinking it's claws into her hair and coat then trying to drag her loose. It reminded me of a nature documentary where a killer whale was throwing a seal around before killing it. It was always going to be an emotional scene to watch as it's about a child facing death and being attacked by an animal/monster, but the choice of music and how that scene was directed were perfect and I cannot praise Goro Miyazaki enough for these two episodes. Clearly I have developed an attachment to Ronja as a character, which is the whole point of the story, but it kind of crept up on me as I didn't really realise it until that moment when the harpie's claws appeared next to her head and it's face lowered into view and I became genuinely afraid for her. Maybe Ghibli should try their hand at doing a horror film?
