Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira episode 1

A great start to the OVAs and a very enjoyable episode. I was int stitches from laughing all the time. And the preview for the next OVA looked rather fascinating. Rika and Satoko as magical girlsDefinitely looking forward to it ^_^

Kami-sama no Memo-chou ep 2 - Eh, Alice is kind of wavering between cute and annoying still. Story telling is good enough though.

Kami-sama Dolls ep 2 - Utao, on the other hand, is definitely cute rather than annoying. Not as convinced by the story telling, though.

Mawaru Penguindrum ep 2 - OK, this ep was a lot cooler than the first. The penguins are worth their weight in gold, and there were things that could develop into an actual plot.

Dantalian no Shoka ep 2 - Dalian is probably my favorite "new" character (ie. I didn't have any previous interest in them) of the season, and there is definitely enough here to suggest that once the show moves out of monster-of-the-week mode it could end up being really good, a lot like GOSICK before it.

Tiger & Bunny eps 14-16 - Ep 14 was pretty ****. Katrina and Kotetsu's relationship is finely balanced enough to be explored purely through the day-to-day runnings of the show. This felt like an episode designed for people without enough imagination to think about characters for themselves. The preview made me think ep 15 was going to be even worse, but they saved that with a classic and fun premise, and some good action. Ep 16 was the much awaited return to Lunatic's storyline, and didn't fail to deliver. The twist they've gone with is cool enough to make up for it feeling somewhat contrived, and the B plot with Kotetsu is exactly what the show needed.

iM@S ep 3 - They are doing such a good job of making you feel like you are there with the girls sharing in their fun! And also getting some great performances in there without making it all about that. Very pelased with how they're delivering this show so far. Current runners up: Chihaya and Takane.

Having a rewatch of Paranoia Agent.

It's always the case that when I revere something throughout the years I get terrified of ever returning to it in case it's of a lesser quality than what I remember.

6 episodes in and it's the same slice of sublime brilliance that I remember.

The only thing that's disappointing is that Susumu Hirasawa's soundtrack is too quiet and not given the star billing it deserves, blending away in the background nonchalently. Noticed, of course, after listening to the OST several thousand times.

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku 1-2

Yuzo Takada is responsible for 3x3 Eyes (good) and Blue Seed (dreadful). Which way goes this light-hearted comedy about an android with the brain of a cat?

Oh man, it's terrible. How does **** like this attain fan favourite status? It's the same old lightweight action/comedy guff seen in the likes of Dominion and Dirty Pair (time to slaughter me some sacred cows!) yet despite its utter lack of substance still makes a desperate attempt at pathos with some awful "heartfelt" family drama.

Even the considerable vocal talents of Akira Kamiya and Megumi Hayashibara can't salvage this mediocrity.

I doubt your bolt-gun shenanigans will ruffle many feathers. Dominion and Dirty Pair have never tried to pass themselves off as high art; lightweight action/comedy it what they're there for. There are doubtless shows that do it better (Patlabor TV springs instantly to mind) but there are also shows which do it far worse. For examples, see: Shōnen fighting series.

Yeah. I considered raising my objections, but eh...

I loved Nuku-Nuku when I was ten, dunno how I'd feel about it now. The regional accents in the English dub were quite fun though and Auntie Helen has a little cameo in that version.

I thought Working was incredibly bland.

lol i remember the dub for Nuku-Nuku it was so bad that it could only be funny,do you remember the awful U.K. dub for K.O. Century Beast Warriors it actually put me of the show until i saw it subbed and then it became a firm fave of mine.

Totally agree with you there Nuku-Nuku is pile of crud but you thought Blue Seed was dreadful,i aint saying its a all time classic but i love that show it always gets a re-watch every couple of months ah well different strokes for different folks i suppose. :)

Hah, yeah - I still have that tape as it happens. One of these days I really should try and find the second series. It didn't seem like there was a lot to it, but it was a fun little show.

Product of its time and lack of competition in the fandom - the list of shows this applies to is as long as my pet orangutan's arm.

Mayonnaise Chikien (Mayo Chiki) episode 2 & 3 - My thoughts on the first episode were really bad and I thought it was going to be the typical same old generic Rom/com, after watching these episodes, was I right? Well............kinda.

Which is a good thing because the main characters are surprisingly likeable at this moment, Kinjirou actually does something rather than being an whiny idiot and he does help people. Subaru while taking me a while to process her sudden femine personality, really does see what Kinjirou does for her.

I might have a good opinion on it at the moment but the series still feels generic, its better than MM! at this early stage but it will most likely sink back into mediocrity.

Mawaru Penguindrum episode 3 - Still loving it, penguins are still awesome and we get some Ringo backstory but like what other people and blogs have said, it needs to develop an actual plot soon, still I can't be mad at a series that offers me silly cute penguins.

Ikoku Meiro no Croisée episode 4 - Again another series that does well to entertain me, Alice acts like a rich spoiled brat but I can understand that, as well as her obsession with Japanese culture.

Still I really am enjoying what the series has to offer.

That old dub might be the only thing that could make the show remotely tolerable for me. Sadly ADV produced one as bland as the show itself.

I thought Working was incredibly bland.

Action/comedy stuff only works for me if the comedy is actually funny (Hyper Police) or if the script exceptionally well written (Patlabor). And even then I'd watch some episodes and wonder why I was bothering because a) the good guys will win no matter what, and b) nobody will get hurt in the process. Tension = none. For that reason I've always preferred the straight comedy and slice-of-life episodes of those two series.

That's fair enough. I'm not trying kick things off just because we don't have he-who-shall-not-be-named around to do it for us anymore, I just feel obliged to express support for the Dirty Pair and Dominion. Yes, they probably are overrated and lionised beyond all rational belief by whiney old-school fanboys such as yours truly, but I stick by my original assessment that both are superior examples of the form.

Just maybe not so much Flash and New Dominion...
