Tomo-chan is a Girl! (Japanese audio) - Episode 1

Despite liking the idea of a tomboy female lead, I actually wasn't planning to watch this adaptation but I gave it a try and enjoyed it. It's definitely in the same vein as Aharen-san in terms of pacing and I can see the concept being repetitive over the course of the series, but I do like Tomo a lot for her voice, expression and character. Prior to watching I did notice some twitter folks being concerned that the anime's adaptation is rough on the animation side and I won't lie that it is very simplistic but I think as long as the Tomo expressions are done right I can probably tolerate some cuts around the edges here and there.

Bungou Stray Dogs 4th Season episode 38 Warning.

The Eminence in Shadow episode 14 Faded.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady episode 1 Crashing in.

Tomo-Chan Is a Girl! episode 1 Seems like a fun premise - hopefully it doesn’t become too repetitive.

Tsurune -The Linking Shot- episode 14 Aim.

Scorching Ping Pong Girls episodes 1-12 (Complete. Though the elements that made up the series were quite familiar this was still a pleasant enough ping-pong themed series.) 3.5/5

Three new shows down and none are keepers so far. Which is probably a good thing because I have a busy schedule already thanks to the sequels and my ongoing shows.

Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save the World ep1: This show sucked. It was very nice visually and didn't fall into the usual trap of pop-up game menus and isekai nonsense, so that was promising, but all of the character backstories (not just the obviously problematic one, all of them) were so rushed that they came off as overwrought nonsense rather than the character-defining moments that they were supposed to be. I get what they were going for, and in the hands of skilled writers it would probably have been a very engaging spin on the boring 'unfairly wronged hero' sub-genre, but the result was a good-looking show let down by some of the weakest storytelling I've seen in a while. A pity because the rest of it came so close to being decent, which somehow made it more disappointing than all of the truly terrible anime out there.

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague ep1: I didn't mind this but at the same time, I don't really see why I would keep watching to see the same gag repeated a dozen times in every episode. It would have been much better with short episodes to keep things feeling fresh each week. Nonetheless, the artsy flourishes are nice and it's good to see realistic, young adult characters (even though the premise is not realistic at all). Not bad.

Tomo-chan is a Girl! ep1: Not my cup of tea but this first episode had a better sense of pacing so it was engaging even though it was the same old formula of a simple goofy misunderstanding mixed with hormonal school hijinks. The lead's friend was fun and provided much-needed balance right from the first episode. My partner is going to stick with it as it provided a few laughs.

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Episode 1 Seems interesting enough - 3 eps rule for this one.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady Episode 1 Party crasher.

Tomo-chan is a Girl! Episode 1 This looks like a fun watch.

Ice Guy, etc ep 1 (dropped)
The same joke over and over! Seems it might have been quite a sweet romance if they took that stuff out! Also the pacing was terrible, feels like a 4-koma adaptation with none of the connective tissue added in like with Bocchi. Source says Web manga, I guess those can be as short or as long as they want, although I saw some comments saying they were short.

Revenger ep 1
Seems like it'll be an intriguing historical action series. Whilst serving as an introduction to the characters, this episode also had a plot with some interesting twists. The period seems to be early Meiji as the English are referenced as traders and so is opium. The Meiji period started in 1868, eight years after the Second Opium War between Britain/France and China finished.

ONIMAI ep 1
A comedy where a girl turns her onii-chan into an imouto! Seems a bit weird and creepy that they'd go for a change in age as well as gender, like "it's OK we're showing a loli in these situations because really they're a bloke!" and some of it was close to the line.
Might continue, but on thin ice.

Ha ha, Scorching Ping Pong Girls.
I was beginning to think I was the only person to have watched it.
Really exciting last few episodes, my heart was beating so fast. Racing in fact.
And one of my favourite opening songs.

The Magical Revolution of the Princess and the Young Lady ep1: Hey, it's exactly the same plot as one of the weaker backstories from Ningen Fushin the other day, except this time it's told in full rather than being crammed into a momentary flashback and the characters are better fleshed-out. As I thought, the (very unoriginal) backstory works way better like this. As for the show itself, it grated at first but ended up being decently watchable. The isekai elements are pointlessly tacked-on and most of the characters are imbeciles but this was still one of the better examples of its genre that we've had lately. I choose to believe that hereafter the series becomes a cute yuri adventure where the leads charge around deconstructing the patriarchy, but it will probably just be lighthearted magic item collection nonsense. Extra points for avoiding falling back on slavery, revenge, tedious internal monologues and demonising all of the female characters right from the start, which are tropes of the genre which need to die sooner rather than later.

Technoroid Overmind ep1: I don't know what I was expecting from a series with such an unfairly cool-sounding title, but a story about a group of impoverished, excessively-helpful, singing androids wasn't it. The attempt at quirky world-building was appreciated even though it wasn't very deep and I liked the colourful designs. The CG dance scenes look decent, as CG dance scenes go, but they're still horrible compared to actual 2D animation. The first episode didn't really give me any reason to keep watching in spite of the plot getting potentially heavier in the last few moments. Another solidly average show.

Spy Classroom episode 1 Death row.

Sgt. Frog episodes 1-13

I checked out some of the new Winter 2023 series this evening:

Tomo-chan is a Girl Episode 1. Tomboys are fine by me! Bring it!

The Ice Guy And His Cool Female Colleague Episode 1. This looks like it will be a slow burn relationship story, love that the characters are older, no high school crap - looking forward to this. Note to self: Fox Girl = immediate waifu!

Revenger Episode 1. Probably my favorite of this season so far. Historical period drama + samurai revenge porn rocks!

Spy Classroom Episode 1. Misfit group of young girls (without mechs) will rule the world, haha. It will be interesting to see where this one goes in the next few episodes.

The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World Episode 1. I'm actually hankering for an overpowered MC Fantasy story - it gives me such a satifying feeling when losers gonna lose!

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady Episode 1. Good start, looks fun. I guess this one will go yuri, hopefully it will stay fairly tame with that.

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog Episode 1. Well, I'm not really into pet animal anime; this one was just ok. I suppose this will be similar to Dog and Scissors, although I never watched that one. I'll give this another episode or two. Definitely would've been much better as an uncensored version though, for those bath scenes, lol.

Sounds gay, I'm in 🥰 :p

I'm currently watching The Irresponsible Captain Tylor and Turn A Gundam :)

It's not a 4-koma, but it is a relatively short chapter series (10-15 pages I'd probably say on average). I'm not surprised to hear it hasn't transitioned to anime well, particularly the earlier content which was repetitive but I'm up to date with the manga in Japanese and it goes in some fairly cute directions so I'll probably stick with the anime regardless once I get around to starting.

Every new director should have to read Bocchi the Rock and then watch the anime to learn how to adapt similar types of short form manga. Don't just use the manga as a storyboard, you're making an anime use all the tools you have, and also cut or add things that make the story flow smoothly!

Bocchi the rock - all episodes
Fate stay night (2006) - eps 1-16 rewatch
Monster - ep 1
The melancholy of haruhi suzimya - rewatch in chronological order
The disappearance of haruhi suzimya

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale ep 1
Seems like it'll be an interesting enough romance with some darker elements to the fantasy in the world building.

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog ep 1 (uncensored)
Ecchi trash 😏 Guy gets reincarnated(?) as a dog and his sexy classmate finds in the street. First episode is mostly POV of them in the shower/bath. I assume the rest will be various situations where Pochita(!) gets an eyeful and to add some variety there were 2 other girls in the ED.

Spy Classroom ep 1
Title says all really. 7 girls are gathered to take part in a Mission Impossible and are to be taught by a master spy. Thing is he's terrible at teaching and they were all strugglers in the academies they were plucked from. I think the format may be 1 girl gets the focus per episode for the first 7 or so episodes and then it'll be on to the mission. This episode proved that the girl it focused on is actually a master at one specific aspect and I assume the same will happen with the rest.

Buddy Daddies ep 1
Seems like it could be a fun show. 2 assassins are unlikely guardians to a girl. This episode dealt with how the girl came to be under their care and had plenty of action and comedy. The girl seems very Anya like minus the telepathy and the guys are your typical odd couple/buddy cop types, doesn't seem like it'll go BL on us.

Wait - so there is an uncensored version available?? I didn't even think to look for one - RE-WATCH tonight! :D

I hope Pooch-ita has a tendency to get very dirty in his romps outside, and requires a bath every episode, lol...
