episode 1

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines (dub) eps 7-12 (complete)
7 was the end of one arc and took awhile to remember what had happened, 8-11 was the next arc about the shy loner girl who doesn't actually want to be alone this trope is so painful to watch it really tanked the overall mood and 12 was a fun one. Overall a bit too much drama to be a rom-com, but enough comedy moments not to be a straight drama so it sort fell between two stools.
Art and animation are very good.
7/10

Making a start on the rest of the Summer 24 shows on Crunchyroll. Have a few on HiDive, but not subscribed anymore and the biggest ship on the high seas seems to have been sunk!

Sukuna: of Rice and Ruin ep 1
Lazy god Sukuna keeps herself in the good books of the head god by gifting her rice from her parents store of rice. This nest egg gets destroyed by her earlier actions of letting humans enter the sacred realm and Sukuna is punished by being ordered to replace the rice by having to work the land herself which just happens to be on an island full of demons.
I could see Sakuna getting annoying quickly as could her mascot guardian thing. Not the best score on MAL. Might give it another episode.

ATRI -My Dear Moments- ep 1
The coastal areas of the world have sunk underwater for reasons unknown presently. Natsuki is the grandson of a famous climatologist and needs to go back to their old house to find a "treasure" to help him get back on his feet, literally and figuratively as he lost a leg as a child and is also currently in financial need. With the help of a mysterious woman named Catherine he fixes his submarine, I'm guessing it was his grandmother's? (who recently died) and dives down to the old house and finds a girl sleeping in a pod. Turns out she's a Humanoid, a super lifelike robot that was withdrawn from sale due to a flaw and thus worth a lot of money to collectors. Both he and Catherine are up for selling her, but by the end of the episode he's having doubts. ATRI, as the robot is called, also reveals that she has a mission from the grandmother, but she has forgotten what that is.
Seems there's a bit of mystery to this one about ATRI's mission and how the world got into the state it has, which are probably linked in some way. But the MC seems a bit weak and ATRI herself is bit too cutesy imouto like. Another one on the maybe pile.

The Elusive Samurai (dub) ep 1
Bit easier to summarise. The story of Tokiyuki Hojo, the heir to the Kamakura Shogunate set in the 14th century. His best skill is running and hiding from having to do any training. One day after running away again he meets a strange priest who says he's had a vision that Tokiyuki will one day be a hero. Meanwhile one of his father's retainers has betrayed the clan and everybody and everything in Kamakura gets wiped out by a rival clan leaving Tokiyuki the only survivor. He wants to die honourably fighting with the enemy warriors, but he ends up skillfully evading attacks and running away again. He meets with the priest again who offers help to Tokiyuki in getting revenge.
Tokiyuki Hojo appears to be a real person from the period, but I don't know how much of this story will be fact vs fiction. Definitely watching this one though.

A Letter to Momo

This was a decent enough film, the first half felt a bit slow and ponderous, possibly deliberately, and made the film feel overlong and the messaging was dished out in a very heavy-handed manner throughout but I thought the final 30 minutes were fantastic and brought the film to a good close.

Bride of Deimos

As with any anime that depicts a random section of a longish manga, the plot was rather non-sensical as lots of elements of it were unexplained which made the OVA, especially one with only a 30 minute runtime, feel very messy and it was terribly predictable too. That said though, as Bride of Deimos was directed by Rintaro during the 80's it does have some very creative and nice looking animation and artwork in it and I love seeing that stuff like that regardless of how good or bad the rest of it might be in these OVAs and helped to make the OVA, imho at least, quite effective as a horror anime.
