Turkey! Ep1-2

Despite having largely avoided spoilers, I partially guessed where this was going before the end of episode 1, but the reveal that the girls’ bowling team end up back in the Sengoku era still made me laugh. Would buy a pint for whoever came up with that idea. Going on the general tone of it, particularly as hinted at by the OP sequence, I don’t think this is one I’m likely to continue, but I can see the appeal.

Sweet Spot (1991)

This one-shot about a golf-crazy office lady is something I came across as a raw some years ago; it didn’t look like anything spectacular, but the naive, newspaper gag-comic art style struck me as kind of charming, so having recently spotted that it had been subtitled, I was still keen to see it. Main character Oyamada is quite fun, her scheming determination to use her position as a convenient excuse to go on golf trips makes her come across like a more all-ages-appropriate version of Keiko Nakadai from Weather Report Girl, but sadly, there’s not much else to it. It certainly captures something of work life in the bubble-era, but at heart it’s just a series of gently amusing skits that feels like it’s largely run out of steam before the end.

I wasn’t able to see any art from the source manga online at a glance, but I’d be willing to bet this was originally a 4-koma and may well have lost something in translation to a longer format.

New Panty and Stocking ep2 (English dub)

My misgivings at the first episode notwithstanding, I actually laughed quite hard a few times during this one, probably more than I did in the entirety of the first season. It’s neither big nor clever, but it’s all in the best possible taste.

I remember that one being a bit of a laugh, just a shame they never made any more of it at the time. There was a later TV series I know, but the fact that no-one ever seems to talk about it does not fill me with confidence…

Treasure Island - Episodes 2 - 8

As a show written for a much younger demographic than me, I have found this to be a lot of fun and very engaging so far. I put a lot of that down to Osamu Dezaki's visual flair which, similarly to a previous work Aim for the Ace, adds drama and weight to what is being depicted on screen and often a very dynamic feel to action scenes that would otherwise be hamstrung by low budget TV animation.

Urusei Yatsura Movie 5: The Final Chapter

Osamu's brother Satoshi picks up the reins of the franchise this time round after Kazuo Yamazaki finished his TV and movie stint with the previous movie. TBH I have mixed feelings about this film. Overall I liked the story and the conclusion it reached with Lum and Ataru's relationship which I found quite fitting in relation to it being the proper ending to the UY anime's long running narrative, yet for a movie with less than 80 minutes of actual content excluding the credits I found it did start to drag in the last act a little and had definitely lost some of that sparkle from the original Oshii films.

Urusei Yatsura Movie 6: Always My Darling

This 10th anniversary project is the first UY anime to be made in the 90's and watching it only a few hours after 'The Final Chapter' you can clearly see a shift towards a more '90s' look in the animation. I enjoyed it and had a good time watching it but it has that long TV episode rather than movie feel to it (which a lot of these type of films suffer from) despite it having some nice looking animation in it and while I think it's still a decent 7/10 kinda film it is definitely the weakest of the 6 movies.
