But I already dropped My Happy Marriage....

Wait, what? Was there a second season of My Happy Marriage that I didn't know about? -Looks up Series on Netflix- Holy heck yes!! My Happy Marriage is one of my Top 5 favorite anime series of the last 8-10 years, pretty much - I totally loved the first season... Instant Watch of the second season for me!

Glad that my despair was helpful! 😁

I watched the whole of the first season before deciding that it wasn't for me, haha.

Urusei Yatsura (2022) Episode 1 & 2 - This was delightful. I don’t know what it is about Ataru Moroboshi but he's like a perfect comedic lead as someone you don't mind getting stuck by lightning by his alien wife (self-proclaimed) every few days. I'm not experienced with the Urusei Yatsura franchise but I do like how so far every 10 minutes a separate story. It means they have a really high density of jokes without anything feeling dragged out. Very cute show without trying too hard.

Let's see how well I keep up with seasonal anime this season, plan to stick with all these so far.

Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (Japanese) - Episode 1

Anne Shirley (Japanese) - Episode 1

Kowloon Generic Romance (Japanese) - Episode 1

Witch Watch (Japanese) - Episode 1

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes (Japanese) - Episode 1

Kuma Kuma Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear S1
All finished
8/10 until Atola appeared in the last few episodes. Then I boosted it to 10! 😃
Very enjoyable and I can buy S2 at Easter..
Hopefully this and dead mount are reduced.
I'm trying not to pay £45 for death mount part 2.

Even I knew about S2 My Happy Marriage

Witch Watch ep1: An overexcitable young witch moves in with her childhood friend (who is super-strong and descended from a clan of oni) in order to make him her familiar and reintegrate with the mundane world. She's a walking disaster with a lot of magical skill but very little common sense, so our hero has to patiently help her out of self-inflicted accidents while she single-mindedly tries to do the right thing and help others. It didn't really do anything for me but it was also not bad, so if you're less jaded by silly shounen romantic comedies there's a lot to like about Witch Watch. The jokes are often funny due to the timing and visual cues, even if you can see the punchlines coming as soon as the setup begins, and the pacing is lively. The ending sequence (which I believe is actually the opening) is also good fun.

#Compass 2.0 Animation Project ep1: I didn't 100% understand what was going on with this series but I really did try. Players join a massively popular combat game as stylised chibi avatars, which have to pair with cooler-looking established 'heroes' in the game to do battle in objective-based skirmishes as teams. Except that there aren't very many heroes available and presumably there are lots of players, given that it seems to be streamed in the streets and the lead is playing it on his phone during lectures. So what most people seem to do is mope around watching idol performances until they connect with a hero - which of course happens when a ReBoot-style incursion means that the boring lead ends up pairing with the edgiest, most unattainable hero in the game. The relentless tutorial narration from the floaty CG mascot, who looked like a rip-off of Drossel from Fireball, started grating very quickly. The other costume designs are loopy though (I liked the black-and-green guy) and the real draw is probably the voice cast. Definitely not the strongest esports-themed anime out there; it's a bit like Belle except without the music or characters, and with a strangely incoherent approach to explaining how everything works. There was apparently an earlier anime which I never noticed so perhaps I'd get more out of this if I'd seen that (or played the original game).

Maebashi Witches ep1: Why are there so many witches this season? A bubbly girl is recruited into a group of witches because they needed more magical power and their creepy Madoka Magica-style mascot/organiser correctly calculated that a friendly person might be more beneficial than another highly strung diva. That diva is annoyed when the newcomer actually turns out to be useful, and the group is whisked away to create a flower shop (why is it always a flower shop?) which doubles up as a location for them to help strangers solve problems in order to earn witch points and make all of their dreams come true. There are strong hints that a lot has been left unsaid, but the main conflict of the first episode is with the grumpiest of the other witches and she's a completely pain in the neck. Visually the episode was doing quite well at first with its lovely designs in pretty jewel tones, but then the dance number started and it became yet another soulless CG idol sequence where nobody moved like real people. All of the magic just vanished at that point. Argh.

Classic★Stars ep1: I have to give this series credit for making both my partner and I laugh out loud in the very first second of the first episode. Also, a musician insulting someone by calling their punches 'pianissimo' is the line of the season. Anyway, a down and out young boxer is gaslit and coerced into attending an ostentatious school where he's forced to join up with a bunch of crazy guys and their crazy teacher, who has named them all after famous composers and wants them to perform. Boxer guy is pressured to join the others even though all he actually wants is to go back to boxing, so a musical showdown takes place which reveals that he's actually surprisingly talented (and an earlier scene had showed him really enjoying a conspicuously similar kind of classical visual kei at a live house). However, he still just wants to leave. It's like Hypnosis Mic with a different theme and smaller cast; I like that it doesn't take itself seriously, but the combination of cheap-looking 2D animation and clunky 3D CG really doesn't make for a good visual experience. The music is quite good though, because classics are classics for a reason and they still stand up with modern beats, raps and rock elements thrown into the mix. I might just listen to the songs and skip the rest of the show.

Lazarus (dub 😜) ep 1
Oh look Spike has learnt parkour!

Mashle (dub) s2 eps 10-12 (complete)
Space and time.
Wasn't the best arc with an exam arc, the action was OK, but the animation isn't up there with the best shounen stuff and the best bits of humour was the fourth wall breaking rather than any of the other stuff. Mash punching his way through his problems are getting a bit old hat too. Did introduce the big bad though, so it has a bit of direction now.
6/10 (same as the first season, thought I had given that more)
Winter (almost) finished... Winter 2024 that is, just Urusei Yatsura s2 to go (and Undead Unluck, but technically that's a Autumn '23 show). Not sure I'm too bothered about either of them.

My Deer Friend Nokotan ep 6
Summertime.

Kowloon Generic Romance ep1: A very solid mystery series which slowly builds up unsettling, incongruous facts as it follows a taciturn estate agent through her daily life. My partner, who was confused reading the manga, is looking forward to getting a second chance to stitch all of the pieces together, while I have been keeping up with Sarah's reviews so I'm enjoying getting to see all of the rich details that she keeps out of her content descriptions! The anime adaptation leans heavily into the slightly dated character designs and lavishly presents a grimy, nostalgic view of Kowloon's Walled City which gives the series a delightfully timeless feel; it reminds me a lot of the 90s both in-universe and stylistically. The only thing I didn't like were the scenes of CG goldfish (the CG thing in the sky is meant to look weird) but given how atmospheric and interesting everything else is, I'll let that one slide.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX ep1: I already gave my opinions about this series in our AUKN site review for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- and they are unchanged; this first episode is cut from the second half of that movie to dive straight in to introducing the main characters (which makes sense). I personally enjoyed how the movie was presented but this is probably a much more satisfying approach for new viewers who only get one episode at a time to digest; looking forward to getting to the new-to-me content soon!

Zatsu Tabi ep1: A young manga artist is depressed after her works fails to impress her editor (I wish more of these recent anime had a strict editorial process too) so to try something new she jumps on a train and visits a bunch of tourist hotspots in Aizuwakamatsu, exploring shrines, hot springs and Boshin War history. Nothing really happens other than the lead parading through a bunch of photorealistic backdrops and trying to cheer herself up; there wasn't even as much obligatory 'edutainment' trivia as I'd have liked. However, for those who like cosy, low stakes series where the most risky event imaginable is that someone misses a train and has to catch the next one, this might scratch that itch and show off a few of Japan's slightly less well known areas to a wider audience. It's light and low stress, with a tiny bit of learning on the side.

As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World
Season 2 finished.

All finished. Another easy watch.
The MC is a bit bland but the characters around him are better.
Favourite character's are Charlotte and the maid with the spectacles.
I would have liked more Licia.
Strange moment when after she and Ars agreed to get married, they shared a bed.
They're 12!

Dante My Cringe ep1

Oh boy. Other than the scene of Dante being introduced with all the charm and wit of a used car salesman on magic mushrooms, I didn’t hate it - it’s decently animated so far and the late Kevin Conroy adds a touch of class to the dub. Quite why they’ve gone for this weird ironic-bad schtick though, I’ve no idea. It got the odd chuckle out of me here and there, but I’d put money on it getting old fast. Not sure I see myself watching the whole thing, but I’ll probably give it a couple of episodes out of curiosity at least

Apocalypse Hotel ep1

I’m not a great fan of ‘post-humanity’ science fiction in general, I feel like I have enough existential dread in my life already, but I was sort of curious about this one, if only because it looks like the sort of thing that might easily get overlooked in a crowded season like this. It does seem very informed by Nier Automata, as the near-human acting manager of a robot-run luxury hotel tries to keep everything ticking over a century after humanity has departed earth, clinging to the same routine tasks with ritualistic observance, but it does seem to be leaning more towards a relatively light-hearted tone, especially if the possibly spoilerific ED sequence is any indication.
