Fire Force Season 3 episode 49 Reborn.

Gatchaman episodes 76, 78-79, 81-82, 85, 88-95, 97-99, 101-105 (Complete. As this was a long series I opted to watch the fan-recommended episodes as to prevent burnout and I think this worked out for the best as Gatchaman was a fun if dated anime and it’s neat to see another older title from Sentai Filmworks back-catalogue.) 3/5

Gatchaman II
episodes 1-3

The Beginning After the End ep1: It's yet another rebirth isekai where an overpowered king from some kind of dystopian warzone is reincarnated as the beloved newborn son of a young couple living in a generic fantasy idyll. I will give it some credit for not falling back on stupid RPG mechanics right away, but there's absolutely nothing new here - there are dwarves from the land of 'Darv', elves from the land of 'Elenoir' and humans from the land of 'Sapin', which is the kind of half-baked world building I expect from a weak mobile game, and the lead masters magic at age two even though he hasn't yet mastered his bowels. It's fine if you just wanted to watch Mushoku Tensei all over again with the horniness replaced by a bored-sounding lead who is trying to process a lifetime's worth of trauma in a dispassionate, superficial way, but if that doesn't sound appealing then I think there will be better shows this season. My partner and I entertained ourselves by trying to guess exactly which fantasy LN trope each event in the first episode would lead to (we managed 100% success).

The Brilliant Healer's New Life in the Shadows ep1: According to the blurb this is meant to be a 'banishment' fantasy but the first episode doesn't go into that plot point, which presumably happened before the sitcom setup of the present. Instead, a Kirito lookalike with incredible healing skills is an unlicensed, underworld healer who honourably helps hot and vulnerable women, because despite living in the capital of healing it's hard for ordinary people to find anyone to treat them. Nothing really makes much sense but if you want to see an edgelord doctor with a massive harem of helpless, dizzy girls (one of each fantasy species, of course) gushing dementedly over his greatness then this is the perfect show. He picks up a female slave in the first episode too and forces her to strip, ostensibly to diagnose her, but it's ok because he then releases her which proves that he's a good person. Bleh. The only fun character is the ghost whose design is way more detailed than anyone else's (it would be better if she was the lead).

Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive? ep1: Mixed feelings. In many respects, this is a lot like My Dress-Up Darling except less glossy and with stilted narration where the script keeps trying to casually explain things the characters know with unnatural dialogue instead of simply showing the viewer as expected in a sensible adaptation to a visual medium. Where this show differentiates itself, however, is that there's an love triangle setup right from the outset, with the friend having to confront her (blatantly obvious) feelings for the jewellery-making lead amidst the arrival of a threat to the status quo: a cute girl who actually likes the lead for who he is. I liked that the new girl has a functioning brain, and that the lead has an actual hobby instead of being aggressively bland like most of his type. On the other hand, the story lurched around chaotically and the friend's behaviour (apparently, she knows that she's cute and milks it - not the most nuanced writing) is often annoying. Her obvious possessiveness is also a turn-off, with her demanding that the lead doesn't show others his passion for his hobby with lines straight out of a bad romance story yet the plot demanding that she's innocent when it comes to having feelings for him. There's potential but I don't think I'm going to bother watching more.

@Rui - you should really just give up on anime altogether and concentrate all your viewing efforts into watching documentaries on animal husbandry to add more excitement into your life. 😜

I love animals a lot so I'd be fine with that. Sadly, Hyakusho Kizoku became region locked after season one :p

But I also passionately love plenty of shows, as the season overview we all did the other day makes clear. However, if I feel as though something is disrespecting my time (or being lame/regressive in its content), I'm jolly well going to say so! No shade on people who like those shows anyway - not everything has to be a classic - but there's a big difference between a series being popular and it actually being good. A lot of the shows I do like are crummy too, but I'd rather watch something crummy and enjoyable than something that either leaves a bad taste in my mouth or has no flavour at all.

this is my favourite part of the season! I love watching random first episodes just to see what happens. doesn't take long these days to see if I'm going to actually like a show (e.g. a convoluted pratfall into boobs within the first five minutes is usually not a good sign for me lol) but I find it fascinating how shows present themselves, set up the premise etc.

This whole episode from what I remember of the LNs early on is more or less original and I hate that the anime is trying to push the harem aspect when that's, frankly, just a comedic backdrop in the novels. All of these girls originally hate each other and then MC comes in and forces them to settle their differences or at least begin a ceasefire and their reasoning for coming to like him actually makes some degree of sense. The only bit that might have happened at some point is him meeting/freeing the slave girl as a part of a larger storyline, but even that I'm not entirely convinced played out like it was depicted here.

Anyways, as someone who likes the books (although they're full of tropes and nothing original either!), I am very unimpressed with the direction of the anime so far.

The conveyor belt process that all of these LNs are getting is getting worse and worse, I sometimes feel. It's really obvious when an anime adaptation is just phoning it in and it's such a shame when they either directly copy the novels without any thought - ignoring the changes that a different medium requires for a good, engaging adaptation - or ignore what people actually liked about the original in favour of adding filler content. And then occasionally you get an adaptation which actually tries and the difference is like night and day.

I actually thought that the base concept of the show could be interesting (like an expansion of Milo's story from the excellent Sabikui Bisco!) but every decision made in the first episode completely turned me off 🫠

Now that I'd watch!

Eternally hoping that we'll get that second season one day soon!

More new episodes.

Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers ep1: This is both dumb and riddled with CG, and yet its overpowering ugliness somehow works in a way that I don't understand. I think it's the first time I've watched a CG show and not been too annoyed by it, which is probably because of the nonstop special effects and the director's commitment to barely ever actually moving any of the models. It helps that the game series also now uses 2D-style CG, so it gels quite well with the series' established aesthetic. I am, apparently, extremely out of date in my knowledge of what is going on in the Guilty Gear series - the plot was a chaotic jumble as it hurtled through introductions and straight into a dramatic kidnapping - but I played enough of the old games that I was at least able to follow, and it's kind of nice to get my knowledge up to date. It doesn't look as though my favourite character is actually going to appear so I'll try to get to know some of the newbies (and Baiken is always cool) and see how long they can hold my attention. It earns a second episode.

The Dinner Table Detective ep1: It's so weird how similar material can come across so differently with better direction and some enthusiasm on the part of the staff (I'm still annoyed about Doctor Detective). There is nothing especially unique about the setup - a heiress moonlights as an actual detective and tries to solve crimes - but the oddball cast and lively pacing kept me fully engaged throughout this first episode and I'm on board to see the next one. The lead's superior is a deranged, flamboyant detective played by an excitable Miyano Mamoru (bringing the same kind of energy as his character in Zombie Land Saga) and her (?) mysterious butler is a merciless genius cut from the same cloth as Black Butler's Sebastian. The rubber-faced heroine doesn't have much presence so far but her reactions are hilarious and even though I was dreading the visuals after seeing the CG-heavy opening, the animation was perfectly serviceable in the show itself. Shame that it's hidden away on Prime.

Sorairo Utility ep12 [end]

A quiet, dignified sort of conclusion to the series, I suppose. It certainly looks as if the desire to continue it is there, although I don't think there's been any definite mention of another season. It's been a very pleasant little show overall, but I think the low-stakes nature of it may frustrate anyone drawn in purely by the occasional, eminently screencappable nods to burning-passion fighting series.

Kowloon Generic Romance ep1

I've seen questions raised by fans of the manga over the pacing of this adaptation, given that it squeezes an entire volume into one episode here, but, with only my limited knowledge of the source material, I'm keeping an open mind. I actually found the manga a bit slow to put its cards on the table, so I'm curious to see how this might work out. Visually, it certainly captures the shabby chic of mid-century Hong Kong (at least as found in Wong Kar Wai movies), and hey, how often do you see a romance anime about adults?

My only complaint is that they didn't go with some appropriately nostalgic jazz for the opening. Or failing that, California Dreaming...
