Been writing a weekly anime column for a local comics group lately, and said I'd have a look at the Marvel anime projects for them. Hence:
Iron Man ep 1-3
Dismissed this after watching the first episode back when it was coming out originally, but it's actually not as bad as I remembered. Despite the story occasionally being faintly reminiscent of Scooby Doo, there's a certain corny charm to watching Tony Stark try to womanise his way into Japanese society, and bonus points for clearly modelling his character design on George Michael, circa 1984. Unfortunately, the writing lacks any sense of originality - even as a non superhero-fan, I thought the plot felt tired and uninvolving. It seems to be trying so hard not to offend anyone that it ends up endearing itself to no-one.
It was probably far too wacky for serious consideration, but I feel it's a great tragedy that they couldn't have stuck with the stylistic template laid down by Takeshi Koike in his pilot film instead.
