Aku no Hana e.12 - Just don't do anything crazy while you're there, please, and you might be able to salvage something... no, please... what are you doing... oh God.

Next week should be good. :D

Actually finished the main series while my connection was down, but in the interests of not writing one massive post, I'll just put up one part at a time.

Bubblegum Crisis OAV 5 - Moonlight Rambler

Probably on a par with the previous episode, if not necessarily better than it. There's an interesting setup for this one, with a group of young women escaping from an offworld colony (hey Ridley) and the villains are starting to take on a little more depth than before, but the writing still feels clumsy, particularly when any character development is needed.

Bubblegum Crisis brims with good ideas, but so much of the characterisation is barely even sketched in. Priss is very concerned for her new friend Sylvie in this episode, but based on what we know of Priss's character thus far, there doesn't seem to be any particular reason for them to be such good friends in the first place. No doubt this is the main reason some say Priss is gay.

Kids on the Slope arrived today and I've already watched the first disc. I honestly love it. It's already had a few tears from me because it's just so beautiful. The opening is amazing! It's already made it's way to my favourite!
It's certainly living up to my expectations so far. :D

After reading about the general setting of the show, I made the mistake of looking for the anime Norwegian Wood, which it patently isn't.
Ha, it definitely isn't that.

Have you seen Honey & Clover? It's an introspective drama/comedy about the insecurities, fear of the future, and one-sided love of a bunch of art students (and their rather tragic professor/mentor figure). It's intensely frustrating to watch the characters spin their wheels for years, and the spazzy comedy can grate, but there are some wonderful pay-off moments and it looks gorgeous. I'd say it has more of a Norwegian Wood vibe than Kids on the Slope, though has its fair share of differences too.

K-ON!! - up to episode 19

Magic Knight Rayearth - Episode 25

I really enjoyed that episode.

Majestic Prince - Episode 11

I am just not feeling MJ at all!!

See, if you asked what i thought of Majestic Prince 4-5 weeks ago, i'd have said the same. However i feel that the past 4 or so episodes(if you don't include this break style ep) have easily improved the series as a whole, it was just a shame it took so long for them to kick in to gear.

I can't get into MP, I really can't, I think I've just seen too many decidedly average 'comedy' mecha shows in the last couple of years and I'm flat bored of them!!

I've circled round that one on a number of occasions, but I've yet to actually see it -it's another thing I keep hearing mixed views on. I'll try and make the effort to give it a shot.

While I'm here:

Bubblegum Crisis OAV 6 - Red Eyes

This one being more or less a direct follow-on to the last episodes is an interesting development. All the more so now that we're getting more obvious nods back to previous adventures. I'm not against the idea of a series having naught but self-contained episodes, but BGC feels stronger for the suggestion that there is some sort of continuity between the episodes and perhaps a larger narrative at work underneath it all.

The art and animation are also starting to show a marked improvement, but frustratingly, I feel the show is hampered by an apparent need for each episode to top the previous one when it's confrontation time. The Knight Sabers turn up with new suits at the end of this one, but it feels like they could have explored their existing capabilities further without bringing in a sudden power-up.

Ef: A Tale of Memories - Episodes 7 - 12 (Sub)
Kids on the Slope - Episode 1 (Dub)

Watched around 9 or so episodes of Kids on the Slope when it was airing so I decided to give the dub a go. It's not bad, but it could be better.
Ef on the other hand, I always watch shows like that subbed on the first viewing as it's usually a much better experience. Ef was a blind buy for me, and like Dusk Maiden I found it a LOT more enjoyable than I thought it would be. I do look forward to watching A Tale of Melodies.

Bubblegum Crisis OAV 7 - Double Vision

I enjoyed that one. For my money, the best and most ambitious episode so far. Everything seems to have been pulled up a notch; it's better directed, better written and better animated. Again, also boasting a nice call-back to one of the (seemingly) self-contained episodes from early on in the series.

Kind of a shame that Vision wasn't kept on as a regular cast member. I'm not sure I'd want her as the new leader of the Knight Sabers, but I feel like she has a more definite motivation than Priss.
