Wow Rui, sounds like you need to take a break from anime for this season - nothing seems to sit well with you, lol... ;)

The thing is, I may be in the same boat as you - there really isn't anything this season that looks very interesting, The only series I am interested in seeing is Ancient Magus Bride Season 2 and Vinland Saga Season 2. The rest of this season's offerings all looked pretty much blah to me too, and I have only watched the first episode of about 4 shows so far.

I try to save the ones that are 'safer' picks until last because otherwise I might lose the will to live in the process of wading through the isekai copypasta. I'm reasonably sure that some of my season twos will be decent watches (unless they pull a 'The Devil is a Part Timer') but I live in constant hope that one of the more generic-looking shows will surprise me! Where it gets depressing are the titles which seem to go out of their way to actively disrespect my time (or my intelligence).

If a series is played straight I want it to subvert my expectations or teach me something new (whether about the real world or the world it's created). I don't think it's an unreasonable requirement but some of this stuff is so aggressively calculated to avoid challenging the viewer that it just washes over me and leaves no impression at all. I'm too old and grumpy to shower praise on anything that I'll have forgotten within a year.

(Please let Oshi No Ko be good when I get around to it...)

Skip and Loafer ep1: I should like this typical school romance but it doesn't stand out much, and while I might give it a second episode, the characters aren't very endearing.
Haven't finished reading all your reviews. It'll give me something to do on my break 😉 but I found the second episode better.
Also give Insomniacs After School a go. Another school based romance which I found the first episode better than S&L.

Thanks, that's good news on both fronts and I'll try to squeeze them both in soon.

I don't think it's just you in this case. Megumin really isn't working out as a main character. Her awfulness isn't over-the-top enough to be funny compared to Aqua; she just comes across as mean and irritating. That first scene of episode 2 where she bullies Yunyun and steals her lunch, for example. It's too low key to be funny. The only good parts of the show are when Megumin isn't the focus.

I liked the girl with the eye-patch that presumably Megumin steals later in a competition?

Birdie Wing s2 ep1: Yaaay, Birdie Wing is back!

At least most of us can agree that this show is great!

I tend to purposefully avoid the more generic looking shows, but it's promising that the Duke Mansion one sounded reasonable, as I thought the trailer for that looked interesting. Like you I think I prefer it when characters act somewhat realistically to situations, even if the situation itself is strange.

For example, Ya Boy Kongming, it's a strange premise, but they play it straight, and Kong Ming himself really does his best to use modern day tactics to his advantage.

That was a great series, completely ridiculous but it went all-in on the gag and the characters were all trying their hardest throughout. Certainly not one that I'll be forgetting any time soon :D

A girl with an eye-patch?
You've got me interested.

Only half joking.
I bought the second season a year ago as part of all the Anime BOGOF Xmas.
Haven't even taken the wrapping of the Blu-ray.

This isn't quite the same as Seasons 1 + 2, it's more of a spin-off prequel I'd say, which focuses on one of the 4 main cast.

Skip and Loafer ep1-2

Initially, I had this down as a typically high quality PA Works production, with cute art and not much else to it, but it’s rather grown on me - it seems like there’s a bit more substance to it than I initially gave it credit for. I do find it distracting how much that one girl looks like Misato from Evangelion though.

Birdie Wing ep2

Finally decided to go back to this, given that no-one seems to have a bad word to say about it. I still find the character art a bit… well, ‘plain‘ doesn’t seem quite right, perhaps ‘calculatedly nondescript’, but otherwise I did enjoy this one more than the first episode. The golfing scenes are fun and I got a laugh out of seeing someone hustling a putting challenge in an alley like a crooked three-card monte.

I completed Witch Hunter Robin

It is a really slow series but it picked up a whole lot towards the end. They were going into some daring themes however ultimately i feel they just played it a bit too safe and could really have gone further than what they did!! just five more episodes at the end and you're really going to delve into some unseen terrtitory

Sadly, this goes the same way as many old school anime/manga, society is not ready to witness this so we cant go further

Still, if you love the 90s & early 00s anime like I do and want something that is very watchable, you will not go wrong with this series
