I saw that movie for the first time a few years ago and it bothers me for a couple of reasons. First, the supposed good fairies are complete psychopaths. When they're brainstorming how to hide the princess from the villain, their first thought is to turn her into a flower. They only decide against that because they think the villain would figure it out. There's no mention of it being a horrifying thing to do to someone.

Later they decide to put the whole kingdom to sleep for a century so they don't have to feel sad about the princess also bring asleep. I'm pretty sure they would have got over it! And what's to stop some other kingdom invading while they're defenceless? Seriously, get it together, fairies. Then again, maybe Britain would be a better place if all tabloid readers had been put to sleep when Diana died.

Aside from that, there was the whole false conflict of the princess supposedly falling for someone other than her betrothed, which could have been cleared up in ten seconds if people would just talk to each other properly.

I think you're being pretty harsh... I wouldn't have called the good fairies psychopaths bcuz my understanding is that psychopaths generally don't care about anyone and just want to hurt people, and honestly those three fairies are a breath of fresh air for me given how rare middle-aged/elderly female characters who aren't villains (especially ones who aren't conventionally attractive and thin) are in animation even now (and bringing up a couple of Miyazaki films doesn't challenge my overall point that it's still rare) - it's really their movie moreso than Aurora's, and I love that about it. I also think the whole having to marry the prince when she's potentially in love with someone else thing gives Aurora more development as a character because it shows that ultimately if she had to, to protect her kingdom she would marry someone she doesn't love. Also I'm pretty sure they were not planning to like, permanently turn her into a flower, plus it's a Disney movie they have literally had singing flowers in some of them and it's a fairytale so it doesn't necessarily have the same implications as it would in the real world... plus it's meant to be funny and to show that they're struggling under duress because it's a difficult situation surely? DGMW something like the 1991 Beauty and the Beast or the 1998 Mulan film has better characterisation and plotting for sure, but I do still enjoy Sleeping Beauty despite it's faults. I mean I'd rather watch it again than some of the less endearing early Toei anime features (though The Little Norse Prince and Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon are amazing films tbf). And I'm not a royalist either, but eh, I still like this film overall. Also it looks incredible with all that lovely wide-wide-screen ballet-influenced art design. I'll admit that I am slightly annoyed by how many men seem to feel the need to dump on films like this but like... hey at least it got me to write more about what I think about the film 🤣

EDIT: I wish I hadn't used the word "also" so many times 😭

Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown Arc (Japanese) - Episode 31 - 34

For some reason it didn't click in my mind that all the episodes available wouldn't be dubbed in English yet, maybe because it's on Disney+ and I expected it to be the same as Netflix where they don't release a show until it is dubbed (though has been getting better recently). Anyway, it ended on a cliffhanger and I had to watch more so switched to Japanese, will carry on with it in Japanese and re-watch the upcoming episodes dubbed as well. Despite hearing that people don't enjoy the later parts of Tokyo Revengers I'm still very much enjoying it personally and the new opening is a banger.

Why overthink an old Disney film.
Enjoy or not enjoy.
If you feel your job is to criticize or pick holes in a film, you should probably make your own and watch nothing else.

The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship (1991) - A beautiful stopmotion animation about 55 minutes long, based on a Russian fairytale and produced by Cosgrove Hall (Dangermouse, the stop-motion Wind in the Willows film and series). I have tried putting this on in the background before and didn't really take it in but this time I sat down and properly watched and listened and was utterly delighted. Its only real flaw is the songs - I usually love musicals and there are only two or three times that the characters sing, but the farmer's wife's singing voice is a bit too loud and atonal for me (though I loved her character generally). Still, overall I rate this very highly and was thoroughly enchanted. I also appreciate that it is just the right length for the story it's telling, feeling neither rushed nor padded in its runtime :)

Moomin (1990, English dubbed) Episodes 72-77 - Just watching Episode 78 (FINAL) rn :)
