Cool grandad.
Into the arc covering the last 2 volumes of the manga I read just before the start of the season.

Deadman Wonderland ep3-4

Have now realised that the series is on Funimation as well as Netflix (the clue was probably the massive Funi ident at the start), so I don't have to force myself through it quickly. It's starting to feel a little more ordinary now, as some standard shonen-fighting tropes are creeping in, but it's still something I'd happily watch a couple of episodes of a week. Would probably play well in an anime club setting.

Hero Mask ep1-3

Part of my interest in this was just down to how remarkably few people actually seem to have watched it, at least in the circles I move in. An oddball mix of detective drama and sci-fi elements with an unusually accurate UK setting (does Japan have British cop-drama otaku?), I really wanted to like this, but it's just strangely lifeless. The plot feels predictable and the dialogue is so on the nose, it might as well have been written by a machine. The closest thing I could liken it to in anime terms though is Babylon, and I would still rather watch this than that. If only because one of Hero Mask's characters is clearly modelled on Simon Pegg.

High Rise Invasion ep1-2

The last series I managed to look at before my subscription ran out, this is one I had very low expectations for, but was still vaguely curious about. Perhaps on some level, a tiny part of me hoped it would reference JG Ballard's dystopian satire High Rise. It does not, but it's not quite as bad as I expected. It's thunderingly dumb and the uninspiring art design has all the tense atmosphere of a level from Super Mario, but it's still a passable enough survival game show, if you're into that kind of thing. With its tacky fanservice and (relatively) graphic violence, it feels a bit like a low-rent Highschool of the Dead, but that one never did much for me.

Started Yumeiro Patissiere (eps 1-6, loving it), ep 1 of Land of the Lustrous dubbed rewatch for the simulwatch, and rewatched Kiki's Delivery Service and started rewatching My Neighbour Totoro both dubbed on BD (though for Totoro i watched the opening song in Japanese and then switched to the English dub for the main bulk of the film) :)

Back Arrow episode 9 Shot down.

Jujutsu Kaisen (TV) episode 21 Baseball.

So I'm a Spider, So What? episode 9 The meeting.

The Twelve Kingdoms episodes 25-39

Just continuing with My Neighbour Totoro rn, the Disney English dub is actually really well done IMO, I'm genuinely impressed :) Funnily enough I never massively engaged with this film when I saw it for the first time years ago (on the official Hong Kong DVD release that I bought in a comic shop in Spain), but now I can really see why it's considered a masterpiece, and the sound mix is phenomenal, def. one of the best Ghibli/Hisaishi scores! I'm also curious about the older Troma/Fox dub as well but it's prob not that good lol

The Case of Hana & Alice

Quite enjoyed this and it reminded me of American indie movies like Ghost World. Relatively slow to start but all the characters are quite endearing and the the main protagonist Alice is hilarious and carries the movie. I have to say I hate rotoscoping, but I can completely understand the reasoning here especially in order to keep the original actors. Really want to watch the movie it's a sequel to now.

Children Who Chase Lost Voices - Film

Y’know, if it weren’t for the fact this movie looks like a Shinkai movie, I’d find it easy to believe it was a Miyazaki movie and... I kinda don’t like that. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid 7/10, with the visuals and soundtrack saving it. It really lacks any sort of focus in the plot tho, the pacing is wild and while it builds up an interesting world, I found it hard to get fully into it due to these issues.

Now that I’ve seen all of Shinkai’s feature films, here’s my personal ranking of them:

1. Your Name & Weathering With You (look this might be a cop out but to me they’re inseparable for whatever reason)
2. Garden of Words
3. 5 Centimetres Per Second
4. The Place Promised in Our Early Days
5. Children Who Chase Lost Voices

1. Your Name & Weathering With You (look this might be a cop out but to me they’re inseparable for whatever reason)
I know what you mean here, it's like they're mirror images of one another. I remember someone writing somewhere about one having the boy save the world (town) to save the girl whereas in the other the boy letting the world (city) go to pot to save the girl. The music for both being done by the same band likely adds to the similarities. I love them both.

Not bought Children Who Chase Lost Voices yet but I'd probably have all the others at number 2 for varying reasons, so how's that for a cop out!? Garden of Words really opened my eyes to the amazing animation in his movies (the use of water I remember being phenomenal -have to watch again to compare to weathering with you but I thought the former was actually better! Probably wrong..) and the other two (or three in my case as I'd include Voices of a Distant Star which I loved) for their beautiful stories.

This is sort of how I look at them, although my description is that they’re two sides of the same coin.

Goddamn and I thought I was running away from choosing! Lol

I love the smaller scale of Garden of Words, which I think probably let the animation have that extra oomph.

Not bought Children Who Chase Lost Voices yet
I dunno if I would suggest buying but I at least recommend you see it at least once, it’s still a wonderful movie to look at. It has some really nicely animated action sequences (that feels strange to say about a Shinkai movie) and you can see some of what would become the cinematographic style of Your Name in there. I think this might be where he first used the style of water that’s in Garden of Words and Weathering With You as well!

Interesting lists. Mine is

  1. The Place Promised
  2. Your Name
  3. Voices of a Distant Star
  4. 5cm/s
  5. Garden of Words
  6. Weathering With You
  7. Children Who Chase Lost Voices
TPPIOED was the first Shinkai I saw and it changed my perception on anime. It will always be my number one Shinkai film. I also like that it has stunning scenery but less than perfect character designs. Makes it seem more real in a way.

Having put it in a list the reality is that I like all of them.

Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist- episode 9 Tested.

Horimiya episode 9 Summon.

The Twelve Kingdoms episodes 40-45 (Complete. Though I was initially a bit underwhelming with the story, it got progressively better as Youko developed as a character. The narrative also opened up further, allowing other characters to get some focus as they eventually interacted with one and other. Overall a very good fantasy story despite the initial episodes not impressing much.) 4/5

This Artclub has a Problem! (Rewatch)
episodes 1-12 (Complete. Still a fun series with some humorous scenarios and interactions.) 3.5/5

Finished Totoro, rewatched Whisper of the Heart and Porco Rosso, now rewatching Howl's Moving Castle (all English dubbed) then on to today's episode of Land of the Lustrous (English dubbed) and after that more Yumeiro Patissiere (subbed) :)
