Worst dub ever

Sailor Moon is a series I've seen several times, some of them when I was still a child, but I've never managed to watch it's ending...
 
Azumanga Daioh. Everything was going great until Osaka appeared and opened her mouth...

It doesn't, but then the dub was made for the American market, and they associate a new student from out of town as sounding like a redneck, unfortunately. :(

In one of the Burst Angel comentarys, it was mention that thay needed some way to differentiate the Osakan characters fron the Tokyo ones and ended up choosing a deep southern accent for it.

The idea stuck and after that, whenever they had a character from Osaka in any of the series, they used a southern accent.

You'll find that the main characters of Abenobashi are the same - as that's actually set 'in' Osaka.
 
abenobashi is another series I couldn't watch dubbed in english.... nothing against that particular accent, it's just that it seemed really weird to me.

They used to use New York / Brooklyn accents before for the same thing, I believe.
 
Yeah, I remember kero as well. But, anyway, if all characters have accent, they might end up not having a different accent at all...

Same. I always thought Osaka's voice was a bit odd.
Though then again... Osaka is a bit odd.
I understand the whole accent thing though. But I always thought it would sound better and more "Osaka-like" if they maybe had her voice a bit higher and had her a bit more soft-spoken. Like in the Japanese version.

But, meh... bad dub or not, Osaka's still awesome, and therefore, I'm stealing that animation from you. :twisted:

I actually loved the Azumanga Daioh dub, and Osaka was one of the better moments. If the only problem you had about the dub was the use of a southern accent for Osaka, then you should really start thinking exactly why they made that decision.

Osaka is from Osaka, and Osaka is slightly... slow. No, they aren't saying that Osakan's speak with the equivilant of a Southern American accent, they are saying that they speak with a different accent, and in this case they chose southern american because it fit the single character the best.

In other series, they differentiate between accents in various ways, if it is needed.
 
I'm not against the idea of Osakan characters having southern-state American accents to differentiate them (it never bothered me in Abenobashi), and I can see the logic in having Osaka speak that way.
I just personally thought that the VA did a poor job, the way she played the character got on my nerves very quickly.

Other then that however I thought they did a sterling job with Azumanga Daioh. Many aspects of the Japanese dialogue were undoubtedly very tricky to translate but they pulled it off wonderfully.
