Where to Buy Anime in the UK (was Anime Online Retailers)

Yep, it was a figure.
Was it due to be stocked in the next few days, as the only time UP has refused to cancel an order was because the stock was being sent to them and that was for two figures so they might have a policy where you can't cancel items when they're being sent to them (it might be limited to high price items or just figures).

My gut feeling is it'd be high price and figures and possibly specialised items with limited appeal. With figures they may have placed the order months in advance to ensure stock comes in. (They do have a disclaimer on figures indicating you should order within a few weeks of it going up suggesting they do order upfront for their initial stock.)

Similarly they can shift another volume of Fairy Tail 37 but volume 1 of something old might be impossible to sell

It was due to be stocked the month before I cancelled it - I pre-ordered it in September, the release date was listed as January and I cancelled it in February (fair enough, probably some distributor delay or something.

They have this on their FAQ page:

The Distance Selling Regulations allow 7 days in which to cancel your order (unless we have informed you personally otherwise).
We will allow you to cancel orders outside this time, but only if the item is not available or has not been released yet.
We reserve the right to not cancel an order if it is already being processed or has been specially ordered on behalf of the customer.

They don't have the right to not cancel an order though. This is what we're entitled to, by law:

The Distance Selling Regulations state that your right to cancel an order starts the moment you place your order and doesn’t end until seven working days from the day after you receive your goods. (It's at http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/ ... egulations if you fancy a look at the whole thing)

Legally, they can't refuse to cancel an order, as long as it's within the stated period (which mine was - I'd placed the order months before and still hadn't received it, so I was well entitled to cancel it).

After their first refusal, I informed them of this and was advised:

"We normally only order figure directly for customers and is the reason we are unwilling to cancel order. As we do not carry stock of this figure.
If you wish to quote and use "The Distance Selling Regulation", then we will no longer accept any pre-order from you in the future. As we have no control over when items are released.

Please let us know how you wish to proceed?"
(this is their entire response, other than it was randomly in different fonts and sizes)

They can't just make up their own policies that go against our legal rights as a consumer...they really need to sort their act out.

Re: Anime Online Retailers

A lot of Japan-based figure shops have similar policies (preorders can't be cancelled without a penalty) since they end up with an expensive lump of plastic in their warehouse they paid full price for.

Personally I wouldn't care if they didn't sign the email or use a greeting (I never read those parts anyway and their team is small enough that it's not hard for them to identify who dealt with you). They should make it clearer that preordering a figure has special restrictions, though, if they don't already, and cite that in such disputes instead of giving confusing advice about the DSR.

Re: Anime Online Retailers

I thought I'd post a word of warning regarding a bunch of cowboys I'm currently trying to deal with. Namely DevotedDvd, based in Australia.

I have used them before with no issues. I know a few people on here have also used them due to their prices being the lowest.

I ordered from them at the start of May and the item was marked shipped within a few days, all well and good like normal. But when it came to near the start of June I emailed them asking them how long their deliveries normally take and what the process was to request a replacement. No response.

I sent a further email to them a few days later asking for the information again. After another week and getting no response, I searched the web and found numerous forums with people having the same issue and one had an email for the manager.

So a further email was sent to him in hopes that I would get a response, and I DID!(yay) He said they were asking DHL global for an update, which was fine with me. I waited another week before asking for another update, and yeah now I'm getting no response from anyone. I sent another email at the start of the week stating I want a refund to all the email addresses I could find but again, nothing.

I highly recommend that no-one uses DevotedDvd and goes with someone else if your importing from Australia. I have used EzyDVD & madman and their customer services is as you would expect from a legitimate company.

I've come to the realisation that I have lost the £40 I paid to them, and wouldn't want someone else to get screwed like this.

Re: Anime Online Retailers

That sucks, I've used them before and they were always fine, but they shouldn't be ignoring you. How did you pay? You should be able to reclaim your £40 through your card (and in doing so you may well get their attention).

Re: Anime Online Retailers

I am looking into doing a charge back with my card provider as I always use a credit card for this exact reason.

I know they are normally quite reluctant to do that kinda thing, but you have to be persistent.

Re: Anime Online Retailers

Speaking of DevotedDVD, they seem to have removed most of their products from their website. All that's available is the stuff on clearance sale. I hope they aren't shutting down, they're the only customs-friendly Aussie BD store I know...

Re: Anime Online Retailers

Ah that makes sense, doing a search has shown some new titles have shown up on the database too.

They never did get back to me over my smashed up Anohana case come to think of it.

They have just updated their site. They probably haven't finished fully yet.

No, that's the page they threw up when they last updated the site a few years ago. I can still log in, no need to reset my password, contrary to what's written on that page. So I guess they either have server issues, or the shop has issues.

I hope it's the former, as the other AU site I used to use, Atlantic DVD went under years ago, and all that was left that was nice and cheap is Devoted.

OK.

They did have a message about maintenance being done a few days ago.

Re: Anime Online Retailers

One question about Up1: I went to pre-order Otorimonogatari from rightstuf but I got an e-mail stating that they had to cancel the order due to restrictions (apparently it can only be sold to the US and Canada or something). Since I purchased items from Up1 that had those same restrictions on rightstuf I thought about going to pre-order from Up1 but it's still not on the site. How long does it usually take for Up1 to update their pre-orders? (considering Otomonogatari was made available for pre-order yesterday, I believe. It's weird, though, I can't seem to find it anywhere else, only on rightstuf, and even Aniplex's site redirects to rightstuf when I click on the pre-order button)

Give them a chance to update the site. Sometimes it takes a few days before items appear. They aren't rightstuf.
If you're really concerned then message them, but you'll more than likely be told it'll be on the site shortly.

Thanks for the info. I was more concerned because of the lack of Otorimonogatari everywhere else (including Amazon.com and the sites on Aniplex's affiliate list), but there's a lot of time yet before it's released. Thanks again.

Re: Anime Online Retailers

Anyone know the rough dispatch time frame for goods ordered from all the anime directly?

Ordered a few things the other day but I am knee deep in the unfulfilled bracket.

Much obliged
