Nobu would be a pearl as well, i can picture the school playground so clearly....

You see, that's exactly why I'd spare them such a name if (yeah right) I had kids.

Still, calling them Tetsuo would be pretty amusing. Everytime you call them you could do it Akira style; "TETSUOOOO!"

Just imagin the fun you could have with twins.

I wonder how many other double acts you could do that with.

Off topic it is almost worth getting two pet dogs just so you can go to the park and shout Tetsuo and Kanada at them.

Although it's highly unlikely I'd name any kids something Japanese, plenty of Japanese names are close enough to English (which aren't of English origin as with 95%+ of popular English names) names or at least names familiar to English people that it's not that weird. For example, Kira is familiar to Trek fans (and is a very pretty name with a pretty meaning too). And Naomi is written identically to the English name in our script. Names like Yoshitakasaburou or Doraemon are obviously silly but so long as it's done tastefully there's nothing to look down on.

Unless you just get your kicks from posting in clearly labelled friendly threads with the "w" word despite making no suggestions of your own. Very clever I'm sure  what kind of names do Trolls give their children, I wonder?

Anything's better than Chardonnay or Fifi-Electra IMO. Yuck.

(FWIW I'd most likely use Italian or Gaelic origin names myself. But I wouldn't care at all if someone from another country named their kid Sarah or Mark or something. We nicked them from other countries anyway.)

I think i'd name my son Naruto or something...or yknow, something like John is fine too.

But I've got a better idea ~ naming kids after Tolkein characters. I'd love to be waving Aldaron off to school in the mornings.

I hate really common names on boys as it invariably means you have to call them by their surnames all the time. Boys more than girls as I swear I know about 25 people called "Chris", 5 friends called "Mark", over 10 "Steve"s or a variant and so on...argh, so pointless! That and most have religious connotations which I don't personally go for.

On Tolkien, slightly tongue in cheek I know but at work I spoke to a supplier whose name was shared with a well-known female elf and I have to say, I remembered her particularly because of her unusual name and went back to her for more business as a result. I'm not sure if she was actually named for the character but the name was definitely an asset for her to stand out in a sea of Sarahs and Emmas and Tanyas when people try to remember their contacts.

Naruto is a goofy name for a real person in any country. And also horribly mispronounced by most fans, let alone strangers :(

Very true. I've always loathed being named Thomas...maybe if it was spelt slightly dodgily it would be better. I know someone called Tomos for example.

I'd actually really like to name a child after a fantasy character. It would have to be rather unknown though, otherwise they'd get so much crap in school. Can you imagine being called Legolas or Gimli? It'd be shocking.

Naruto'd be the worst name to call a boy ever...except maybe Rock Lee

Yes Legolas would probably lead to a life of parental-directed resentment but something more obscure can certainly work if it's a pretty name on its own merits. A lot of the elfy names sound vaguely like words from other languages (including Welsh which is nice and close to home for the less adventurous) or you could just make up a fantasy style name with a meaning yourself - it's how a few common names now came about originally after all (local folk tale characters, animal spirits, obscure deities...).

Might Guy is any better? :D

Gimli wouldn't be bad if you were tall ;)

I hate really common names on boys as it invariably means you have to call them by their surnames all the time.

People always called me "Carlin" back in the old secondary school days due to there being at least one other "Matt" in most of my lessons. It eventually became so apparent that even my friends called me Carlin on a regular basis.

EDIT: Oh, and in my current college geography class, there's three of us, and I'm known as "Matt the hat"... (Yes, if you are wondering, I do wear a hat most of the time).

Isn't that really annoying, ryuzaki? My name is pretty common nationally but I never had more than 1-2 in my year group even so because there are so many popular girls names out there in the mix that diversity exists. But almost every male I know has one of a tiny pool of accepted names, poor chaps. So they all go by their surnames alone or silly nicknames, whereas the girls usually get to feel like they can at least have a chance to make the name theirs. Nobody has ever called me by my surname but my brother and father are both exclusively called by the same surname by their peers.

Sorry I'm dragging this somewhat off topic now I feel...

Hmm.. You see, I'd rather go for a more niche name - Something along the lines of Nate River or Mihael Keehl would suit my personality fine, I would think.

St was always a wierd name, pronounced like "sinjin" apparently....

Properly? Like using one of the names with Hebrew or Latin origins we use every day? Most common boy names here in my generation aren't British at all.
Naming your kid with a weird name (or something Japanese) is pretentious and unfair on the child. You're automatically making the child different for no reason other than it was a nice sounding name you heard in an anime. They will be picked on at the very least at some point in their life. The origin is irrelevant. The fact that the names are uncommon is the real issue.

It's common sense. Obviously hearing the truth is harsh for some people so I'll leave you be to think it's actually "okay".

You do know the definition of the word "hypothetical" don't you?

Crikey man chill out, learn to see serious and not serious questions why dont you?

So a "proper name" is just a "common name" that many other people around you have? What exactly is the point in naming someone then? I thought it was to give them a (reasonably) unique tag within their family/peergroup so that people knew when they were being referred to. If you like common names, that's fine; a lot of people do it as tribute to family traditions too. I don't personally like it. Diversity of opinion is great because it means you can populate the world with Johns and I'll populate it with alternatives so everybody wins.

I never said anything about an anime name. Japanese does not stop at anime. The topic was well-titled by its creator.

And what's wrong with being different anyway? Everyone will be picked on for something in their life if they hang out with bullies, unfortunately. As I said, all of my female friends growing up had unique names in their peergroup; even my relatively well-known one was pretty rare. It's nice.

You're a troll for coming into a clearly labelled thread to insult people participating in it for sharing their views on a lighthearted topic. I will reply to you again because you directly addressed me.

My old boss at work gave at least 2 of his 3 kids Tolkien names or names bassed on Tolkien, but as we live in Wales he was clever and picked names that sounded Welsh or were close enough people would not find them too unusual.
