i was thinking if you could give a japanese name to a child what would it be? for me kira and haruka would be the names i would pick for a boy and girl! what about you guys?

I've always like Rei for a girl's name although theres no way i'd call my kid that here considering its Ray....not gonna do her a lot of good in school methinks!

Aside from that i'd say Mai and Yui. Theres something about really short names that i really love.

As for a boy's name....hmmm, Raiku and Kaito methinks.

Ill be the first to admit i looked up the boys names just now but i did actually know the girls names beforehand :p

I'd be highly unlikely to name a child something very Japanese, but even less likely to use an anime reference.

Anyway, I like these names on girls:

Jun
Karin
Tomoe
Mifuyu

Don't like many boyish names, but lots of gender-neutral names sound ok (didn't bother listing any). I don't like many very boyish names in most languages actually :/

Sound, aesthetics of the word and meaning are most important to me.

In a practical sense if this was real I'd pick a name that wouldn't have its pronunciation completely brutalised beyond recognition by strangers. The ugly way most American dubs pronounce pretty names ending -tarou or Sakura annoys me (my RL name suffers from people being unable to spell it correctly in English or pronounce it elsewhere, so being phonetically recognisable is nice...). I look at Tomoe and imagine how someone who doesn't understand Japanese would think it is said, and realise it would be a very frustrating thing.

Interesting topic idea by the way!

Actually i've for a long time (and still do if i have my own daughter) wanted to name her Hikari or Yue

Though for girls Sakura is also a personal favorite

boys, maybe Kai, Kira or Toboe

Same here, Something about the meaning Blossom and the name itself is quite appealing. I don't really like any other names particularly. It would be too attached to the anime characters, otherwise.

"Here's Jenny, Heres Bobby, Here's Dustin and Here's Monkey D. Luffy".

None, because I'm not going to force a name from a different culture and from my interests on a child. They deserve to be named properly.

Yue would be a very strong bet for me. I like the moon more than compared to the sun. There's the story of the "rabbit on the moon" that I can see in each full moon. Plus it's a glow that's gentle and which you can see, rather than a blinding light. So something that's spiritually close to me I feel would be great for a japanese girl's name.
Maybe Meroko, as she fits in with the rabbit theme too (and is generally nice in Full Moon).

For boy, that's a toughy. Dare I say it, I think Suzuku would do since it's the name that sticks in my head the most for guys...

I share the same opinion as Rui that male names don't sound as nice as female names, even if I am male.

That said, I probably like too many names to list, but a few favourites include:

Haruka
Mai
Minori
Aoi
Shizuka

Properly? Like using one of the names with Hebrew or Latin origins we use every day? Most common boy names here in my generation aren't British at all.

I shouldn't feed the troll.

We dont really have many British names anymore, do we? Matthew, Joeseph, Mark were from the east of us, so that's a few names now that's not from the UK.

As for the male names, I think it's just harder to remember the male names, but they dont sound any worse. Others I remember are Sasuke, Shinji, Keitaro; but they've had to have had some thought. It's mainly the "S" names I remember the best.

Considering that the English language is a mixture of French, German and a heap of other languages from the amount of times we've been invaded; there are no truly English names anyway.

Why arent there more Viking names around?

I have no interest in children. Plus

Of course, naming your child "Suiseiseki" could bring some laughs. "My name is Suiseiseki, HOW DO YOU DO!? NOW YOU GONNA DIE."

Nobu would be a pearl as well, i can picture the school playground so clearly....

You see, that's exactly why I'd spare them such a name if (yeah right) I had kids.

Still, calling them Tetsuo would be pretty amusing. Everytime you call them you could do it Akira style; "TETSUOOOO!"

Unless i had a japanese wife, only then would i consider the subject. Kids are getting weird enough names as it is these days, we dont need Japanese thrown into the mix.

Well it is a theroretical thread here chaps and chapettes. Im pretty sure the OP doesnt mean it seriously. Unless you were living in Japan or had a Japanese wife/husband (but even then i'd be very hesitant unless we lived in an asian area.)

When someone says testuo i think of the film. Mmmmm cyborg man with a huge drill as a.....mm yes.
