What Games Are You Playing?

I am a huge fan of Morrowind, very disappointed with Oblivion. I'm just installing Skyrim, but I have a bad feeling because I can see that the game is made for consoles.

Blue Reflection: Second Light
BLUE REFLECTION_ Second Light_20211123102459.jpg
This is hands-down my favourite game of the year. The original Blue Reflection was an interesting game that struggled against its limited budget. As the only magical girl RPG I'm aware of, it felt like a proof-of-concept experiment in some ways and was a little rough around the edges. Second Light is a different story. While Gust don't have the deep pockets of some developers, they have clearly pooled all of their resources and talent in this game, a sequel that builds on and enhances everything good about the original while fixing all of its weaknesses. The visual style is gorgeous, the characters expressive and likeable, the story emotional and engaging, the music beautiful, and there are lots of varied locations to explore. I almost never bother with the photo mode in games, but I couldn't stop tinkering to pose screenshots in this one.
BLUE REFLECTION_ Second Light_20211127141632.jpg
The sequel also tweaks the tone quite a bit. The first game was a sincere story about a girl trying to come to terms with an injury that stopped her doing the one thing she loved. Second Light opens with a group of girls finding themselves in an abandoned school in the middle of nowhere, and quickly takes on a cosy summer holiday vibe. If the original was like the more serious Sailor Moon manga, Second Light is like the Sailor Moon TV series, adding a huge dose of good-natured humour. While both games end up having surprisingly epic conflicts later on (the first game borrowed some story elements from Evangelion, believe it or not), Second Light would best be described as an iyashikei RPG. Yes, you spend plenty of time exploring combat areas and fighting demons, but you can spend just as much time talking to the various girls, getting to know them better, going on dates with them (generally non-yuri for the most part, aside from the odd bit of suggestive flirting), and building cafes and festival stands at the school.
BLUE REFLECTION_ Second Light_20211126172629.jpg
The combat also gets a significant upgrade from the original, and this time seems to be heavily based on the one used in Atelier Ryza, though it gives you the option to manually control all three characters. It adds some interesting features, like a more timing-based 1 vs 1 mode that cuts in during boss fights under certain conditions. It's still an easy game, but not quite the total cakewalk that the original was all the way through.
BLUE REFLECTION_ Second Light_20211122155956.jpg
The only weak element is a few wonky stealth sequences, but most of those are relegated to optional side-quests anyway. Aside from that the only downer is that it ends. When I finished Returnal recently, the prospect of having to go through that frustration again to get the true ending filled me with dread. With Second Light, knowing that there's a different ending on the second playthrough has me tempted to start it over again almost immediately.

The arrival of the PlayStation 5 got me back into the gaming backlog again lol.

Completed Game #33 + Platinum #76: Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Arcade Future Tone DX (PS4)

Recently acquired earlier in the month, I finally had a go at the physical release version of Project Diva Arcade. This came out back in November 2017 and I played the original version digitally when it first released in June 2016. I never finished off the Japanese version as I only had one of two packs, but I did finish all of the songs through the English version.

Not going to delve much into this one as the DX version is pretty much the same as the original but with additional songs, most were released as DLC for the digital version. The trophy list is probably the most disappointing as it does not allow you to unlock trophies for the original version so in a sense it only has one small list making most of the songs pointless if you want a complete experience. That said the physical release is worth it to have access to almost every song on the disc. The DX version does include a Platinum trophy.

Completed Game #34 + Platinum #77: Astro's Playroom (PS5)

Pre-installed on every PlayStation 5 is a short tech demo game designed to show off the DualSense controller. Developed by Team Asobi, we have the robot from Astro Bot: Rescue Mission getting a new adventure in a non-VR platformer experience that ironically pays homage to the history of PlayStation. I say ironically because Sony themselves doesn't give a damn about their past as they prefer to focus on new stuff, remakes and other things. Yes I am still bitter of how poorly handled their PlayStation Classic was and their disregard for backwards compatibility for older consoles.

Despite that, the game is a solid adventure that shows off the controller pretty well. You have motion controls, voice controls and various abilities to get to the end goal. These include shooting with bow and arrow, jumping with a springer, rolling in a ball, climbing vines as a monkey, flying around in a rocket and also collecting puzzle pieces and items to complete the PlayStation collection.

Once you finish all four areas, each covering a piece of PlayStation history, you unlock a fifth area which I won't spoil as it's a pretty cool surprise. The game does offer a Platinum trophy which is pretty easy to get, though the trophy system is a bit glitched so I had one trophy unlock but never appear on my trophy list, and I only managed to get out of it because another trophy unlocked afterwards.

Completed Game #35 + Platinum #78: Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight (PS4)

FEu55FbXwAMXQ30

First things first, the Persona 3 waifus look even better in this game. Holy ****.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night was a pretty cool music rhythm game though it's setlist was very hit or miss. Atlus has brought back the concept with Persona 3 & Persona 5 though this time they're also on the consoles. Now there's good news and bad news.

Good news is that there's no story mode and is instead replaced by Social Links which are much better and more interesting, and the setlist is a mixture of the original songs, remixes and some cool extras which is better than before. The English dub is still as strong as before, though a certain character's voice has aged pretty badly for obvious reasons that I won't delve into. The waifus are still great, heck Elizabeth is pretty funny here surprisingly.

The bad news is that the gameplay doesn't quite work on console format. The issue is dependent on how large your TV is and where you're positioned, if you're close and the TV is large, you will likely struggle to understand what is going on because the note placement is on the edges of the screen. The gameplay itself isn't bad at all, but this is a perfect example of a system that doesn't quite leap very well on console format.

You can play the songs on Easy, Normal, Hard and All Night difficulty and with no punishment can add extra modules to change the difficulty of the gameplay such as randomised note placements, any button press to hit any note, faster speed and more. You can also unlock additional costumes and accessories which is neat.

The Platinum is pretty easy though it can take a while to unlock due to having to complete the social links, which overall takes about 9.5 hours to complete. I played the game on PlayStation 5 so I'm able to play the game in 4K resolution to go alongside the 60fps that was already available for the base PS4 users.

Completed Game #36 + Platinum #79: Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight (PS4)

Released alongside Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight is pretty much the exact same game but for Persona 5! Honestly it's just as good as the others, though the song selection depends on whether you prefer the music for P5 or P3.

I found this game to be pretty fun also, though I do think some of the songs overstay their welcome in terms of gameplay. I guess this is just my reaction due to how the setlist for Persona 3 Dancing was.

Not much to say about this game since it's just repeating what I said about Persona 3 Dancing, except Makoto is still best girl.

Astro's Playroom (PS5)

Pre-installed on every PlayStation 5 is a short tech demo game designed to show off the DualSense controller. Developed by Team Asobi, we have the robot from Astro Bot: Rescue Mission getting a new adventure in a non-VR platformer experience that ironically pays homage to the history of PlayStation. This was a great little game. Having a fleshed out tech demo like this to show off the DualSense's capabilities was a smart move, since it's the PS5's unique selling point and not all games take full advantage of it. As you say, it's painful how badly Sony usually neglect their legacy, so this was a bit of a nostalgiagasm. The final boss especially was a deep cut for anyone who owned a PS1.

Completed Game #34 + Platinum #77: Astro's Playroom (PS5)

I loved playing this. It was really nice showing how the new console worked. And all the references to old games, feelings! The gameplay itself was nice as well, very comfy and challenging enough in places to remain engaging. What a great design that was. The T-Rex! I remember it well. My brother really loved dinosaurs and would spend way too long just making the dinosaur rotate and walk. So cute.

I've been playing Halo Infinite as I have been a fan since number one so it is nice to have something simultaneously new and familiar. I have also been playing Demon's Souls PS5 and a whole lot of lichess whilst watching the world tournament!

Following on from my previous post I’ve played through GTA: Liberty City Stories and am now near the end of GTA III Remastered. LCS was at times very rough to play through with frequent frame rate issues and a middling storyline whilst III also has a lacking story but holds a historical significance which I can appreciate amongst the less engaging story and characters, aspects that Rockstar improved upon with subsequent entries in the GTA series.

I have halo infernete on pc but it crashes at the start of the first mission the game needs patching and has anyone down loaded the matrix unreal 5 tec demo it looks like a movie.

has anyone down loaded the matrix unreal 5 tec demo it looks like a movie.
Yes, it's amazing. On top of looking photo-realistic at times, it virtually eliminates issues like draw distance and level-of-detail pop-in. Its procedural generation tools sound crazy too; that whole demo was apparently made by a team of about 50 people.

It's just a shame that Unreal Engine 5 isn't being released for developers until next year, so it will be at least 2-3 years after that before we start seeing games running on it.

The Matrix demo is certainly impressive visually, but doesn't do anything new regarding gameplay or interactive experience. I curious if the gameplay can surpass what has existed in Saints Row or GTA.

I'm replaying Ace Combat 7 at the moment. This is one of those series that flies under somes people's radar because at a glance it just looks like every other aerial action game out there, but it stands head and shoulders above the competition thanks to its solid gameplay, inventive mission designs, outstanding music, and emphasis on story and character.

Believe it or not, Ace Combat was one of the trailblazers of quality story-telling in games back in the series' golden age on the PS2, and was quite experimental in that regard. Ace Combat 4 was told from the perspective of a war orphan being cared for by the ace squadron that you're fighting against, so the characters you get to know are the ones you're trying to kill. Ace Combat 5 went more the Hollywood blockbuster route with big budget CG cutscenes and possibly the best story and missions in the series. Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War was a prequel to 5 and played out as a docu-drama with live-action interviews with survivors of the fictional war.

If you're new to the series, just avoid Assault Horizon or Ace Combat Inifinity as a starting place, since those were where it went off the rails for a while, with the former being an ill-advised attempt to ape the style of Call of Duty and the latter being free to play. 7 was a real return to form.

The music is among the best in gaming too.

what's everyones GOTY for 2021? I havent done a huge amount of "new" gaming this year but played enough.

For me it's between:

Psychonauts 2 (XSX)
Chicory (PS5)
Resident Evil Village (XSX)
Metroid Dread (NSW)

If I had to choose i'd say it's Psychonauts 2 just for the complete, wholesome package and the creativity in pretty much every world. Dread would be a close second.

Oh and if you get the chance, please play Chicory, it's a great dive in to self worth/doubt/imposter syndrome and wil resonate well with any creative types.

The day will come when I'll start AC7 and actually see it through to the end! Through no fault of its own, I just don't think I'm in the right mindset each time I try. Reminds me of Far Cry 2 where it took a few tries but when it happened, I loved that game. Great almost simulator!

Anyway, for GOTY talk, and knowing I'm much more on an anime vibe now (I always alternate between more of a gaming vibe or an anime vibe and I'll have a hard time doing both at the same time), I wish I could say Shin Megami Tensei V, but I started shifting more towards anime as I was starting that game, so I didn't move past the first 3 hours. That is definitely OST of the year, though, the battle themes alone are mind-blowing.

Of what I did play:

1-I loved Deathloop and I think it was overall the strongest game I played this year, with the level design being especially worthy of note and fun, which is no surprise coming from Arkane. I'll have to get an Xbox eventually thanks to them being under Microsoft now.

2-Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge surprise in the story and presentation department. A great story, acted and delivered on the level of a naughty dog game, easily, with stunning art direction all throughout. It's remarkable because being a marvel cosmic property, the writers could've easily lost themselves trying to bite more than they could chew but they kept it simple while making great use of the IP and crafting relatable, fun and funny characters. Just really, really good.

3-Metroid Dread was pure gameplay perfection. Some cool bosses, great levels, very good game.

4-Ratchet and Clank PS5 was my first experience with the franchise and I loved it. Extremely smooth and fun. The graphics were mind-blowing.

5-Resident Evil 8 was a very fun game with some great moments, but the final area dragged on for too long and left a bad taste in my mouth. Loved the setup and variety and RE is one of my all-time favorite series. They're always consistently fun.

I missed a lot of indies (all of them, really), Hitman 3, P5S (which I bought day 1 but haven't touched since) and Returnal didn't work for me.

I've got Forgotten City on my game library waiting to be played and I'm keeping a close eye on that Psychonauts 2 promotion on PSN.

Not having time is so frustrating.

Games I wish I'd played in 2021:

House in Fata Morgana
Forgotten City
Chicory
Unsighted
Tales of Arise
Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Psychonauts 2
SMT V

Most anticipated games for 2022:

Final Fantasy XVI
Elden Ring
Suicide Squad vs JL (exclusively because it's Rocksteady)

I think it's been a pretty weak year for games for me tbh, if I had to pick a GOTY it'd be between:

Guilty Gear Strive
Monster Hunter Rise
Yakuza Like a Dragon (I know this was 2020 on other platforms but was 2021 on PS5 which is where I played it)
I did also really enjoy playing through the Mass Effect 1-3 remasters that came out this year too, if they count.

If I had to just choose one then I'd be pulled towards Guilty Gear Strive, for whatever reason.

My GOTY list is:
1. Blue Reflection: Second Light
2. Life is Strange: True Colors
3. Atelier Ryza 2
4. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intermission (ie. just the Yuffie DLC that came out this year)

Returnal gets an honourable mention for all the ways it excelled, but doesn't make the list due to how angry it made me.

Games from this year that I really need to buy at some point: Scarlet Nexus, Tales of Arise, and Bravely Default 2.

I just finished the PS5 version of Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order which was pretty good. It's basically Dark Souls with lightsabers and difficulty settings. It takes far too long to unlock a decent range of attacks and force powers though.

Rounding off the year of 2021 with some more games.

Completed Game #37 + Platinum #80: MediEvil (PS4)

Many years ago for the original PlayStation came MediEvil, a gothic horror themed action platformer that did pretty well for the console. The idea of a skeleton hero fighting the undead, monsters and more with statue ghosts mocking him along the way. I heard of it, but never managed to get the chance to play it. That is until the PlayStation 4 remake came along in 2019, though I didn't acquire it until this past few weeks.

The remake of MediEvil is very faithful to the original in terms of combat, exploration, and difficulty. The combat is pretty straightforward as you have a weapon and use it to attack other enemies, though you do have a selection to choose from like a hammer, longbow, spear and a few extra items along the way. The PS4 remake also added a quick swap-around option so you can alternate between a primary and secondary weapon which is very handy for certain situations. The shield is also there but I personally never found much use for it in most of the game.

The gameplay is also straightforward - reach the end-point to proceed to the next level, and if you like collectables but not too much that ruins the pace, there's only two major ones in the game (one of which is exclusive to the PS4 version). The first are these Chalices which are unlocked when you defeat a certain number of enemies followed by locating the item once the percentage hits 100%. This rewards you with access to the Hall of Heroes where you can unlock more health, new weapons and more. The second collectable are Lost Souls that are scattered across the whole game. Find a soul and it will ask you to do a specific task in another level. Complete all of the souls will reward you with the original PlayStation version of the game, however the UK/EU copies will be based on the PAL version.

The levels are fairly short, but this does mean that you will have to finish them without a game over. The game is quite challenging as a result of this, which is the norm for a lot of games released back then. You do have life force which is extra mini-lives that can be replenished when you find these green highlighted areas from time to time, but it's important that you understand how enemies work and be cautious as you progress. Jumping into water or a pit will be an automatic life-lost for instance. Game over doesn't mean you'll be back to the main menu at least as you'll be able to replay the current level when that happens, though it does mean having to re-collect the items in the game.

Overall, MediEvil is a short but great action platformer in general. The combat is fun and rewarding, the level design is really good including the puzzles and the collectibles are pretty neat too. I would say my only criticism is the camera as it's not perfect plus the extra camera strafe option isn't perfect for any accurate range shots. I was able to get the Platinum trophy for the game and one of the trophies is technically buggy (Die 7 different ways) but you can get out of this by getting a game over from a timer in one of the later levels. Playtime overall was about 10 hours.

Completed Game #38 + Platinum #81: Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS5)

After the success of the 2018 game, Insomniac decided to offer a short game to show off what the game can do for the PlayStation 5. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales takes place after the events of the 2018 game and puts the spotlight on Miles who is the newest Spider-Man in the game's series (though Peter Parker is still around and both will be fighting alongside each other for the sequel in 2023).

The gameplay is tweaked from the previous, with many of the mechanics being familiar while some new additions were added due to Miles having unique powers compared to Peter such as being invisible and bio-electric abilities. These two new additions actually makes the gameplay even better as it adds more fun to both the stealth and regular combat. If you hit enough enemies, the Venom Power is more rewarding.

The story is pretty good and explores Miles' character a lot especially given the villain of the story as well as the side characters around him. There are also some side missions that you can do during the game alongside collectibles, challenges, hideouts and more. You can also unlock new skills, abilities, and costumes, including an animated cell-shaded suit and Into the Spider-Verse suit. The latter of which also provides a 20 FPS style animation which imo does become quite jarring when you're playing the game at 60 FPS.

The length of the story mode is about 8 hours if you don't skip any cutscenes, but going for the Platinum trophy will offer another 4-8 hours to the mix depending on how good you are with the combat. I have been KO'd quite a lot during the Normal difficulty mode and that's mainly due to enemies constantly hitting you with rockets, brutes using streaks of fire that block your Venom Power & healing amongst other things.

Overall, the game is a solid launch title for the PS5 and worth playing while you're in the Spider-Man mood.

Damn, totally forgot Little Nightmares II. That was amazing through and through, so that's actually my number... 2? I think.

Creepy game; the creatures will stay with you as will the finale. Very cool. Shame Tarsier has moved on from the series and Bandamco owns the IP. Eager to see what they create next.

I also forgot No More Heroes III, which I had pre-ordered the CE for but I'm still waiting for it to be delivered. Never again Pix N Love. I'm pretty sure that will crack my goty list.
